I've looked at these photos and wondered if there was sufficient clearance for the vertical movement of the steering rods. I currently fly with no covers at all- and after flights of 3 hrs have experienced no effects. However I have appreciated the depth of travel available on some rough strips. Indeed, I've often heard the rods "chatter" on takeoff on rough strips as they vibrate against the cutout edges. I think brushes or overlapping rubber is a better solution. Adrian Nobel (in Australia) built an 801 with dual sticks and has had a pictures of it on the Zenith website. Adrian's 801 is green and white if you can remember seeing that aircraft out there. I am building dual sticks in my 801 using sketches provided by Adrian. It certainly makes the control installation more complex. Adrian is pretty satisfied with the dual stick system. It makes entry and exit of the aircraft a little more difficult and is slightly heavier than the center stick but certainly makes writing clearances easier for us right handed folks and seems as though it would be more comfortable on longer flights. But in my first few flights with a thin rubber covering blocking the holes we experienced CO in the cockpit after about an hour (indicator went dark) Replaced the thin rubber with two pieces of 'engine baffle material' (each side) and solved the CO problem...no sign since...although longest flight to date is only about 2 hrs. Please, for your life's sake, find the source of the CO leak from the engine and repair it there. There was two cracks (dificult to see in "normal" preflight inspection) in the muffler inside the engine compartment. I did check to find the leakage and there is a small amount around the exhaust connections in the engine compt. I suspect this was the source and the heavier rubber around the steering rods did prevent it from entering the cockpit. Talking with better qualified persons than myself it appears this design on the 0-235 is prone to a small leakage and nothing can be done about it. I have redesigned the cooling for the engine and I think this will also help remove any CO from the engine compt. As with any 'experimental' these small modifications take time to prove themselves and I have been very careful to monitor the detector...so far without any indication of CO in the cockpit since fitting the rubber around the steering rods. I recently recieved the plans for the 640 I plan to build and as I was reviewing them tonight I noticed they include an optional firewall steering box that has sliding covers over the steering rod slots. The plans show the contruction of a 4 sided box that is placed against the inside of the fire wall and is attached the floor. The box has slots for the steering rods and has covers that have a matching slot. Between the cover and the box is a steering box slide. The part numbers for the components are: 640-F-7-3 Firewall Steering Box 640-F-7-5 Steering Box Slide (2 required) 640-F-7-6 Slide Cover (2 required) I don't know if these could be adapted to the 701 but thought you might be interested.
