I wonder if these parts are adaptable to the 601 series as well? Anyone seen this setup yet? ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 11:34:21 AM PST US From: John Hartlen Subject: Zenith-List: Rudder Pedals --> Zenith-List message posted by: John Hartlen Hi List. I recently purchased an unfinished 601HD kit. I'm about 6' 2" tall and was wondering if anyone can tell me how far forward I can move the rudder pedals to give me more leg room. The plans give a measurement of 28mm and state this measurement is for short legged people but give no measurements for how far forward you can actually move them and still be able to maintain clearance for braking when the pedal is pushed fully forward. Thanks John ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 04:55:58 PM PST US From: David Barth Subject: Zenith-List: Rudder horn goof-up --> Zenith-List message posted by: David Barth Hello list. I have just made a totally avoidable error amd drilled the holes in the rudder horn to 1/4 inch instead of the 3/16 called for in the plans. These are the holes where the rudder cables attach. Any advice on how I might be able to salvage this part. Having made it myself, I know how much work it will be to make another one - and it was so beautiful I hate to turf it. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks David ===== David Barth 601 XL Plansbuilder Currently making parts. Use a larger bolt. Less aluminum means a savings in weight. Rivet another piece on each end of the horn (more weight) and drill the 3/16th hole. Let it rest a day or two, walk around it from the other direction, have another cup of coffee. Get the attaching hardware out and look at that. You can see if you REALLY made a mess or just enlarged the hole. I am using SURELUBE sintered bronze bushes throughout my 701. the bush dimentions are 1/4"O/D 3/16"I/D and 3/16"long the product # is C0608-2. I obtained them from a bearing company and I am sure that they would be available in the USA. They fit perfectly and give lifetime permanent oiling to the pin or bolt fixing, and when they wear out they can be replaced. I'm sitting here looking at a rudder horn that is on my shelf that's perfect but for horns a 1/4" longer than called for. I feel your pain, but this is what it's all about. I'd do it over, because it's one of the least difficult lessons you'll learn while building this plane. Respectfully, Larry C. At the moment I'm using Tempo spray on Zinc Oxide Primer. The can states "...provides maximum bonding to bare aluminum and steel." A friend of mine mentioned the other day that he thought that if the primer isn't "self etching" then you needed to use a conversion coat such as Alodyn. There are self etching primers out there, one being Mar Hyde (I believe that the brand). Now, I can't find any reference to "self etching" on my trusty can of Tempo Zinc Oxide. Also, ZAC mentions nothing about self etching primers or using Alodyn before using a corrosion prohibitor. They just talk about scuffing with a Scotch-Brite pad and degreasing with lacquer thinner or MEK. Bottom line what are your experiences? As I mentioned in my first e-mail one of my considerations is the firewall aspect, I wanted something that would also be fireproof. Regarding the chatter, a close look at the rods will show a piece of aluminum tubing over the area that rubs the doors or the edge. This prevents the sawing action of the treaded rod. They have branch locations in just about every state, if you will e-mail me offline where you are located I will get back to you with the location near to you.
