Have been using the Red Scotch Brite Pads to shine up the surface
(remove surface oxidation), then clean with Acetone (less toxic than MEK &
Lacquer Thinner). Been brushing on thinned out Stronium Chromate (1 part
primer, 1 part hardener, 2 parts Laquer Thinner). Stuff sticks good and
appears to hold up pretty well. I assume Zinc Chromate works equally well.
I use gloves and a respirator with garage doors open for health reasons.
Only coating mating surfaces. From what everyone says about the corrosion
resistance of 6061T6, the priming could probably be eliminated altogether
unless you live in a coastal area.

Now, I can't find any reference to "self etching" on my trusty can of Tempo
Zinc Oxide. Also, ZAC mentions nothing about self etching primers or using
Alodyn before using a corrosion prohibitor. They just talk about scuffing
with a Scotch-Brite pad and degreasing with lacquer thinner or MEK.
Bottom line what are your experiences?

Take hart David,
Many kit manufactures over size the holes for the rudder cables, and put in
a flange bushing. This bushing is pressed in and is a replaceable wear
point. ACE is the place has oil impregnated bronze that will do
wonderfully.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: David Barth <davids601xl@yahoo.com>
Hello list.
I have just made a totally avoidable error amd drilled
the holes in the rudder horn to 1/4 inch instead of
the 3/16 called for in the plans. These are the holes
where the rudder cables attach. Any advice on how I
might be able to salvage this part. Having made it
myself, I know how much work it will be to make
another one - and it was so beautiful I hate to turf
it.
Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
David

Subject: | Holes in the firewall |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Mark A. Wood" <Mark.Wood@uvm.edu>
Hello all.
With the talk about the steering rods and CO issues I have been
thinking about other holes in my firewall. I am using an O-200 and I
need to hook up a heating system. I have a heat exchanger and I am
putting together a mixing box for hot and cold air. I am just a
little unsure about the idea of a 2in. Dia hole in my firewall to
bring the air in.
I assume I should seal a metal tube through the firewall and connect
red flex tubing to both sides of this. Anyone have any other good
bits of info to share on this?
Thanks

I E-mailed Zenith a couple of years ago - I think the answer was you can
move the rudder pedals forward 50 mm.
I moved mine forward 45 mm. I have ample clearance from the firewall. I
also moved the seat back rearward 50 mm.

Thank you everyone for your your helpful suggestions.
I get the idea that I am not the only one to make
silly mistakes from time to time. Thanks for that
too. It is somewhat motivating to know that people
who are flying homebuilts today made mistakes in the
process but still managed to get airborne eventually.
Happy building.

A professional painter friend of mine told me that before any paint is
applied the surface should be scrubbed with Scotch Brite and wax and grease
remover(mine is PPG brand DX330). Don't let it get dry. Then wipe with
paper towel saturated with same in one direction then wipe dry with cleane
paper towel in one direction only. Clean part or new towel for each wipe.
Any other way just chases the greasy fingerprints around. And any grease
will eventually lift the paint. He also said lacuer thinner won't work.

Closest one to David would be 500 Weber street Waterloo, great thought on a

Could probably drill the matching fitting from 3/16 to .25 and use 1/4 bolt
instead of 3/16..

Hello David:
Sometimes there are parts that have to be re-done, in our case we made
a "mirror" mistake. In the "U" piece that suports the stabilator where
the main hinge goes, has a set of holes, we drilled them in the oposite
side. So that piece had to be redone, lucky we had some material and
we bend it with our hidraulic 10' press.
Since then we have made only a couple minor mistakes that were easily
solved or redone.
The most dificult part of building a Zenith plane is double check the
plans to not make over confidence mistakes.

List,
I finally finished the first wing on my 701 kit and I'm looking to build a storage
cradle for both wings. Does anyone have a source for a good set of plans
for a wing storage cradle?

Just for storage, you can hang them with a piece of rug around the
leading edge, got this idea from Mr Milholland's trailer (Legal Eagle
Ultralight).
He uses the rug in the wall of his trailer, one side fixed and the
other with a hook. He crosses the wings with bongee against the wall
(padded) so they will keep the wings from moving sideways and hitting
the walls on the road.
I will hang the wings from the roof with similar rug strips, I will let
you know how it works (will post photos).
In fact we work on the fuselage hanging it fron the roof, to work
inside the control door.

Subject: | ELT - Location & Suggestion |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Don Honabach" <don@pcperfect.com>
Hi Everyone,
I'm getting ready to purchase an ELT for my 601 and was hoping for some
recommendations on the location for both the antenna and unit itself,
and which models have worked for others. I've read and talked with a few
builders that have put the ELT antenna right behind the rear baggage
locker floor bulkhead which sounded like a good idea. As for the unit
itself, my initial thoughts were to put the actual unit in the area
behind the 'seats' or somewhere in the baggage locker area. Also, does
anyone know if any regulations coming down the line that would make the
current basic models of ELTs obsolete.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
