Subject: | 7075 instead for 6061 |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Johann G." <johann-g@talnet.is>
Hello list members.
I am finding out that a lot of parts have changed from my original kit, plus the
floor material 7-F-8-7 floor plate is missing from the kit, and am having problem
getting 6061 material to replace the outdated parts,
Is it acceptable to use the 7075-T6 material in place for the missing and changed
parts, with a good corrosion protection between different materials? This material
is assessable to me up here.
Thanks in advance,
Johann G.
Iceland.

Johann,
I'd stay away from 7075 because it is compromised in weldability,
formability and corrosion
resistance. Its strength characteristics are higher, but at expense of
everything else. When it corrodes, it flakes
and pits from the contamination of handling. On commercial items forged and
sheet, we tried simple painting, conventional anodizing and none of it was a
satisfactory result when environmentally tested.

7075 T-6 is darn near impossible to bend. It's usually shaped while in
the soft "O" condition then treated to T-6. It's a lot stronger
material, but far more brittle (prone to cracking when flexed). If
you're using it for flat, non-structural parts it MIGHT be OK, but I'd
say a phone call to ZAC would be in order before using it.
Give them a call or use the online support request at
http://www.zenithair.com/support.html before you try use any different
materials.

If you bought a kit from zenith and parts have changed or become outdated,
check with Zenith, they may exchange or replace them. I've had pretty good
dealings with them whenever I've had problems.

Ideally, but....... difficult to pre-bend both ends and have bend
lines match-up after skin is wrapped around ribs.

Don
Thanks for the info and this sounds fine with me.
FYI- More info on Franks heads, we did find loose guides and one knurled but
I think the biggest problem is that they where installed at the stock
height. With the camshaft being reground to larger lifts (.250 is the
largest on a regrind, that's .388 at the valve) the bottom of the retainer
is hitting the top of the guide as the engine gains rpm. This will push the
guide threw the retaining ring and grip the valve at the radius of the
valve. Also we do not use seals with our guides because they are hand honed
to fit. Also, think about the angle the guide is in when mounted on the
engine, gravity says fall out not in.

Subject: | Zenith list; 701 TRIM TAB SETTING |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: JERICKSON03E@aol.com
Hi List. Larry
I'm at the same stage and will use the airfoil neutral position as the
reference line.
That is, with both the horizontal stabilizer and elevator on the work table,
UPSIDE DOWN, the upper surfaces lay in the same plain. That seems to be a
neutral position for the combined airfoil. Stand off bars lift them up off of
the table, and support the elevator out over the side of the table.
The trim tab will be set to the same ~ neutral parallel plain, and the rod
adjusted for equal travel of the trim servo, to give trim tab it's up and
down required travel per the print. That will a starting position at least.

Hello Bryan and list members.
Yes, that would be great if that was possible, but this kit was bought in
1988, and many drawings have been made since then. I would be happy to buy
all the parts that have changed since then, for the heavier engine
installment.
The cost to send it up here and the added 24,5% sales tax would make things
very expensive in the end.
The shipping companies charge you by the size and not the weights, because
it is more favorable for them.
If I can not get the parts, or use the 7075 material, I will end up by
ordering from Zenith. Until then, my project has halted.
I will ask Nick if I can use 7075 for the floor, and prime it with Zinc
primer.
Thanks to all the replied to my post.
Best wishes,
Johann G.

Bill,
Even though the 701 is a high drag design, strut fairings can reduce a lot
of drag. I'm planning on making alum strut fairings for my 701, although
that's a bit up the road. What I have in mind is making a jig out of wood
to form an airfoil shaped fairing to fit around the 4130 tubing. It then
gets riveted at the trailing edge of the fairing.

I'm a little concerned that the steel struts become hard to inspect with
these in place, or maybe all the rivet holes provide excessive opportunity
for moisture to invade the strut interior. Thoughts?

Subject: | Fuel Pump - Aux Tanks... |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Don Honabach" <don@pcperfect.com>
Hey Guys,
I'm trying to work out the details for a 'keep it simple' installation
that will connect my wing tanks to my primary fuselage tank.
In short, I just want my two wing tanks to fill my primary header tank
which will be controlled by Left and Right Fuel Pump Switches. In order
to keep the fuel line runs simple my thought was to get 2 - Facet 40171
Solid State Fuel Pumps which have a built in check and foot valve so
that the fuel will not flow in either direction unless the pump is
turned on. Since these units won't permit fuel to flow in either
direction unless on, this would also eliminate my need to install a
manual fuel shutoff valve.
My main concern is that the lack of manual fuel shutoff valve might
raise some concerns during the inspection period since it seems like the
need for a shutdown valve is a major given. However, in this case, I
can't see why one would be needed and it would further simplify the
plumbing if one wasn't used on the aux to main fuel tank connections.
Thanks in advance for everyone's help.
Regards,
Don Honabach
