Subject: | 801 accident in Sacramento |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Gary Liming <gary@liming.org>
The 801 that went down at Marysville, CA near Sacramento last Friday was
indeed the 3 year old Flypass 801 built by Art Mitchell. The preliminary
report from the FAA oddly lists the plane as registered in Canada under the
registration number CGGAH, instead of the more recent registration number
N235RJ, which is also in the FAA registration database with Art Mitchell
listed as the builder. It used a Walter LOM M337B 6 cyl inline 230 hp
engine. A report of Chris Heintz flight testing this aircraft is at
http://www.zenithair.com/stolch801/lom-flight.html
Prior to October of last year, N235RJ was CGGAH and was registered to
Jarrett R. Douglas on 9/17/2002 with a/c model CH801 and serial number
8-4114, manufactured 2000 by A. Mitchell. The engine was listed as
AMA/EXPR on the FAA's airworthiness certificate, issued 10/2002.
In the report, it lists the time of accident as 2320Z, and the METAR at
2253Z showed CLR visibility at 10SM, winds VRBL at 3 knots, so it doesn't
look like weather was much of a factor. The only descriptive info given in
the preliminary report was: DESCRIPTION A CANADIAN REGISERED [sic]
EXPERIMENTAL ACFT CRASHED UNDER UNKNOWN CIRCUMSTANCES, THE TWO POB WERE
FATALLY INJURIED [sic] AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED.

Yipes! I flew in this plane on my rudder-workshop/check-writing weekend...

Does anyone know the e-mail address of a Jabiru 3300 forum or other good
location to ask questions about updates, mods and installation techniques?
Thanks,

Is there anyone on the list that has converted their bungee gear to spring gear
on the HD or HDS. I am going to change the gear on my plane and would like to
discuss the Mod with anyone that has any impute, pro or con. Is there anyone
that has been fortunate to fly both the HD/S and new XL that can shed some light
on the landing characteristics of each. I love the plane but its landing manners
could use some improvement. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks for your help, Frank

Thanks for your help, Frank
Frank,
Would you care to elaborate on the problem with the bungee type gear?
What is it you don't like about its landing behaviors? You tri-gear or tail
dragger?
Just curious.

There have been many discussions here about the inadequacy
of the brakes on the zodiac. On Sun I found out the reality.
I had just finished some work on the fuel system and
wanted a test fly. Our Monsoon is in full swing and I had
to wait for a break in banks of rain to do a quick circuit.
On climb out I noticed a squall approaching that I hadn't
observed from the ground and thought it would be wise to cut the
circuit short. I turned "base" (more like a spitfire approach)
half way down the 3000' strip @ 95 knots. By the time I
was on final I wasn't any slower- hence the hold off was very
long indeed. The air was very still despite the approaching squall
and this prolonged the float as well. When I touched down
onto the puddled rainway the brakes were extremely ineffective.
In the end I stopped about 60m short of the end but this is
well beyond where I normally pull up. Probably not that
dangerous but certainly alarming. It was a combination of unusual
events typical of most accident/incident scenarios. In retrospect,
a side slip on final would have helped a lot.
My concern has always been that the brakes would make a forced
landing on a road or similar much more trying than it need be.
I've resolved I'll do something about them ASAP.
FYI my brakes won't hold past 3,000 rpm on my 912.

Roger that! My brakes won't hold past about 3500 rpm on my 912. Practice short
approaches and land as slow as you can comfortably accomplish!
GGP 412 hours todate.

I have the bungies on my 601HDS. I have recently started flying a new
Alarus CH2000 at my flight school. I haven't noticed any serious
differences in landing. The biggest difference is taxiing on bumpy
surfaces.
I do think it is funny to see all the parts this $135k airplane has in
common with my <$30k homebuilt. Although I don't have a Garmin 430, or
Sandel HSI in the Zodiac.
