    Subject: Re: Roto Zip
--> Zenith-List message posted by: daddybob <daddybob52954@yahoo.com> A Roto Zip type tool (there are other brands that are better quality) can be used effectively to cut many types of sheetmetal but only where no other tool will either reach or yield the desired shape and flatness of cut. It requires a lot of control, as someone has already pointed out. Cutting metal with it bears little resemblance to cutting sheetrock with it. The bits are expensive and break easily. Buying expensive carbide bits can be even more costly because they are very brittle and break really easy. Carbide bits require real concentration on control. These tools are definitely nice to have around when nothing else will work for a difficult cut, but they won't substitute for more production oriented tools. My employees usually groan at the thought of using it, and if I want to shake good ideas out of them as to how to handle a problem cutting situation, all I have to do is say "use the roto-zip", then they will scramble to come up with something else. DB PS- is there a searchable website or any kind of archive for this group? I've been lurking here for a while now and you guys are putting out a wealth of info that should not be lost. http://taxes.yahoo.com/

    Subject: Generic aluminum welding question
--> Zenith-List message posted by: ZSMITH3rd@aol.com Okay, Gentlemen, who wants to jump on this: Recently I read in some aircraft-related publication ( can't find it now ) an article about welding aluminum. The author mentioned some specific welding equipment and processes. There also was the mention of the TYPICAL amount of current required per each 0.010" thickness of the aluminum sheet when fabricating fuel tanks and the like. As I recall, the amperage values were very small as compared to those used welding steel, naturally the electrodes were of a small diameter, and without the missing publication I am, hat in hand, at your mercy. I'm told aluminum is easy to weld, but that without proper equipment I'd just be wasting my time trying to learn. Anyone want to offer a suggestion as to what is the "best" TIG/MIG rig for aircraft-quality work? Thanks Zed Smith 701/R912 Northeast Texas do not archive

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Pinneo, George" <George.Pinneo@trw.com> I'd want to Heli-arc weld it as I did on my 601 HDS. It takes more heat to weld aluminum because it's so conductive the heat runs away from the source. Steels hold heat nicely. Learning to weld aluminum is a lot tougher than steel or stainless steel!! If you're going to make tanks, I'd recommend .040 to .050 minimum 5052-H32, 50-60 amps on a Miller with a TIG built into it. I spent about $1300 in all, but that was 5 years ago. Smaller units have been offered since. Argon and a foot feed are necessary and there are lots of books on the subject to get the rest of the guidance. Too much to elaborate on here, but my journal has the process and what I learned the long way to both wing tanks and later the header tank. Photos show some of the forms etc. Good luck Larry C. McFarland - 601hds @ http://www.macsmachine.com

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Matthew Mucker" <matthew@mucker.net> David, That's a good question. I'll have to review the code for the web page and the design of the database. Despite the fact that I wrote the stuff only a couple months ago, I'm not sure right now. I have midterms next week so I won't be able to do anything until next Friday at the earliest, and I think my girlfriend is going to demand that I spend time with her before I update the website. But still, a very good question.
