Builders
Back on Dec. 2, I tried to send a picture of my home made drill to the photoshare,
but being a computer newby I knew nothing about format sizes and probably
sent it as a large file which was rejected. Today I am trying it again.
It is made from an automotive heater fan motor, 12 volts. The bit is epoxyed into
a tube which fits over the shaft. The mounting flange that was used to bolt
the motor to the car was removed. A sheet metal handle was made, and a good (6
amp) switch installed in handle. These drills work excellent on sheet aluminum
because they run so fast (10,000 RPM). No need to center punch your holes.
Check out the photo and then if your interested print out this message and the
photo, for your shop. Contact me direct for more info.

Good Morning...
I am starting the rear fuselage this morning and I was looking at the
3rd gen instructions for assembling 8f2-2a to 8f2-2b. I have measured
the 20 mm and the 3744 mm lines and the straight reference line C to D,
however I cannot get the rivet lines on the smaller 8f2-2b to line up
with both the upper and lower rivet lines of 8f2-2a. At best I can the
upper rivet lines to line up, but not the lower. If I get the lower to
line up, the top of 8f2-2b does not match the edge of 8f2-2a. I do
understand the top edge of 8f2-2a is not straight, but it would appear
as if the bottom is.
Are the longeron rivet lines of 8f2-2a and 8f2-2b supposed to line up?
Or at least sort of look like they should when they are joined? Should
I just trust the 20 mm setback on 8f2-2b and the straight 3744 mm line
from the C and D points on diagram 8fr-1?
Any help is appreciated...
Thank You.

Ray Lasnier is using an industrial 1/4 inch compressed air ball valve with
a nylon seat much easier to turn but you will still need to extend the
shaft. Should be available from any compressed air tool suppliers.

Dear Scott,=0D
=0D
The upper Longeron should be a total of 3744 mm long, and the lower
longeron should also be full length, the Skins 8F2-2A and 8F2-2B are cut by
the builder and should have been indicated by black lines at the factory.
The rear skin 8F2-2B should overlap the front skin 8F2-2A by 20 mm. Double
check the Drawing 8FR-1 which should answer your questions. Hope this helps

Awhile back there was a post concerning the 601 wing
walkway, it didn't seem to get much attention, but
stuck out " like a sore thumb" to me.--- it said the
walkway should be beefed up, as the .025 didn't seem
to be holding up on the factory airplane------- I
heeded this important note and am now at that phase of
construction, so I added an additional piece ( on my
601 XL ) of .040 on top of the .025 and what a
difference it makes in strength. It is now .065 vs.
the .025 the plans call for......
My point---- I want to take the time to thank the
person wthat made that IMPORTANT post----
MANY THANKS !!!!!!!! " fred " ( I hope they

Just wondering why zenith chose to confuse me with two size rivets. Every
hole I drill I have to go back to the drawings just to make sure it is a A4
and not A5. I seems to a flunky like me that it would have been easier to use
just A5's everywhere. The cost or the weight difference doesn't seem to be
much of a factor. Are the bigger heads that much more drag? Is it a cosmetic
thing or is it when we screw up a A4 part we can slip a A5 in it's place?
Since I am not the designer on this project I guess I will continue with my
double riveting experience.

Jack,
The A5 rivets require more edge distance to meet the 2 times diameter
rule for edge spacing (as per the manual). Since the A4s are a bit
smaller you can place the holes closer to the edge without 'violating'
the edge distance rules. Also, while no one item will kill you weight
wise, but they do add up and a couple pounds here and couple pounds
there and before you know it, the plane is too heavy. I remember awhile
back talking to ZAC and they weighed all the parts that get trimmed
during the building and it was a relatively high amount - somewhere
around 30 to 40 pounds.
As a side note, most rivets on the plane are A4. As you work on more
structural areas, then A5s tend to be used.
Also, please don't take this the wrong way, but I only mention it
because this hobby is something that can and will kill you if not
respected. When I hear someone indicate that it's too much trouble to
double check the plans for A4 vs A5 rivets it makes me concerned that
they may be rushing the build process which could lead to bad things.
I'm sure all builders with any time on their belts would all agree that
it's time to temporarily walk away from the project if you start to
feel that you are rushing things or don't fully understand the current
process your working on.
Regards,
Don Honabach
