Jack I concur with Don Building an airplane is a lot of work and you MUST respect
the drawings unless you have the background to make changes and substitutions.
MANY years ago at Oshkosh a gentleman and his 17 yr old female passenger
were killed in front of the crowd when an outboard wing panel detached during
a flyby. It was determined that the pilot (also the builder) had substituted
smaller, different rivets than those specified by Thorpe. ONE item CAN indeed
kill you if it's the wrong one. On all the airplanes I've built I find when
one job gets tedious, boring,depressing, never-ending or add your own pet
word, I work on a fun part of the plane for a day, week..... or go fishing.
You don't want to be worrying about all the changes you made while flying your

That is interesting to me. My kit came with .040 and the plans call for it
on my HDS kit vintage 1993. It does fine with the 250 lb guys I fly around
from time to time. I can't imagine .025 there. Don

For what it's worth.... I 'color coded' my rivet gun tips with a little
paint, then when pre-viewing each stage of the plans, I used a
similarly-colored hi-lite pen to differentiate the A4 from A5. This was
especially in areas like the center wing box / seats area where there are
several lines of different sizes in close proximity.
Also - don't forget the A6 on the leading edge wing ribs! (don't ask me how
I know... ;-0 )

Hi my name is Terry Ladouceur, I have been lurking on this mailing list for
about 10 months now and I must say that the assistance I have seen between
builders and flyers is absolutely fantastic.
For myself I have always known that I could not/did not want to build an
aircraft as I do not have the skill nor the patience for such work, so I
applaud those of you that are taking up the challenge and those that have
already completed your project.
So now after the intro to the point of my message. I have always wanted to
own and fly a Zodiac 601. When they first came out in the early 80's I was
totally inspired by them, but of course in the 80's I could not afford such
a luxury. but now a little later in life and I have just received my Private
Pilot Ultralight and want to make my dream complete by getting a Zodiac 601.
I just sold my Pelican Club, which I purchased to learn how to fly and it is
a great plane, but not really a good plane for my personal mission of cross
country flying as mine was powered with a Rotax 582.
So my question is, can you provide some data regarding the different types
of engines that are available/installed currently on Zodiac 601's? As I am
looking to possibly purchase a partially completed kit, I will need to make
a decision on what to use as a power plant. I am looking for total installed
weight, horsepower and for those who may have actual flying experience with
the different types of engine, performance data on max speed and cruise. If
you could provide any insight on the following engines that would greatly
appreciated, as I am looking for a good cruise speed without having to break
the bank to install the engine:
Rotax 912
Rotax 912S
Rotax 914
Jabiru 2200
Jabiru 3300
Subaru EA-81
Corvair
Or any other engines that may be in use. Also if you could point me in the
direction of where I might be able to get a decent deal on purchasing one of
these engines (either new or rebuild or low hours is fine), that would be
greatly appreciated as well.

I sent two sets of pics to matronics for posting by accident. The first set
you come across have four pics in the file and all the info about them. The
second set of pics only have two pics in the file and NO info. I have had a
kazillion emails thanking me for finding them so to everybody I say you are
welcome. Thats what makes this list soooooooo great and us Zenith builders do
have to stick together. I have learded alot from this Matronics list and we
really need to thank Matt for all his good work. I did forget to tell ya all
the price. The boots are 16.88 each and the plates are 13.68 each. Not a
terrible price in my eyes.
Now to switch gears, the 801 crash in California last week has a bunch of us
801 builders. I first found out about it in the Yahoo experimental group
room. I will post the link to this room so anybody that wants to read all the
threads about the crash can. The guy named Dann that did the first few
postings has emailed me directly and filled me in with as much as he knows.
He was the pilot of the news chopper taking the video so as a fellow pilot I
trust his guestimate of distances. He told me the Wings, Rudder, Horizontal
Stabilizer and Elevator were 1/2 to 5/8 of a mile away from the wreckage of
the fuselage. Guys, this is disturbing to say the least. If you read all the
posts in yahoo you will see some of us want to buy the debris and do our own
autopsy on the plane. We are scared that the FAA and the NTSB will not
investigate it throughly. ZAC has removed the listing for Ron Jarrett from
the builders on the web portion of the 801 site and I hope to heck they are
involved in the investigation. Here is the link for the Yahoo group, start at
the first listing and view all the posts. God bless those two people that
were in the plane, that was a long 30 seconds or so before they hit. Ben

I am installing the electric trim kit on my 701 elevator. Does anyone have a
recommendation for a connector to hook up the pigtail from the servo to the
cable going out the front of the elevator? I guess this could be hard wired,
but it makes more sense to make it disconnectable in case of servo failure.

Hey Guys,
I have one of the newer Stratus converted Subaru EA-81s (longer starter
and reverse throttle springs - pulls to idle instead of pulling to full
throttle).
The way that ZAC does the throttle linkage will mean that I will end up
pulling back to increase the RPM and pushing forward to decrease the
RPM. I'd like it to work in the standard way (push forward for RPM
increase), but haven't been able to figure out any easy way. Has anyone
run into this already and found any good solutions?
