On my Stratus I thought I had the same condition until I looked carefully
and realized that the springs on the carbs actually pull the throttles to
wide open so you have to pull against the spring tension to close the
throttles. With the Bing carburetors it's hard to see the throttle plate.

Bryan,

I thought I was going insane at first because another builder said that
he didn't understand what the heck I was talking about, but I finally
figured out that his bing carbs had the carb throttle linkage closer to
the front of the plane where mine is closer to the firewall on the
plane. From what I've been told, Stratus had to move the throttle
linkage because they could no longer get the smaller starters and the
new ones interfered with the throttle linkage.
I've also test fired the engine without any throttle cables and it sits
at idle. Another local builder that has his plane setup with the smaller
starter and forward throttle linkages goes to full throttle unless you
pull back against the throttle linkage spring.
Thanks!
Don

Terry,
My experience is limited to a sample of 1- my own 912 engine. Without
diminishing the merits of other engines, in the end I was impressed by the
ability of the 912 to complete a number of recording breaking flights
including around the world (by trike) and 2 trikes from Sth America to
Sth Africa. Colin Boddill (sp?) also flew a 912 powered trike from the UK
to Sydney. The engines performed magically on varying quality fuel and in
extreme conditions.
Many other engines are fine for our needs, but when an engine has this
kind of record, I think it excels.
I've also seen some convincing evidence showing that despite the cost
of 912 parts, the 1200-1500 hr TBO, reliability and fuel burn make
it a cost effective option in the long run.
However, having said that, the upfront price is hard to swallow.

Rank speculation alert: I'm not an engineer or NTSB investigator, and I
don't play one on TV. So the following obviously isn't worth much. But,
having looked at the video of the crashed 801, I cannot help but believe
that this airplane exceeded VNE and/or structural load limits. The impact
forces on the fuselage appear to have been EXTREME, far worse than I would
guesstimate for a fuselage falling to the ground after some kid of
structural failure at cruise speed.
My further wild guesstimate is that we are looking at a misjudged recovery
from a dive, with parts lost trying to pull out before impact. Langewiesche
describes precisely this kind of accident in "Stick and Rudder," and
mentions the likelihood that the aircraft will experience structural failure
prior to the impact itself.
An awful thing. The human tragedy is enormous, and obviously the technical
issues are a matter of great concern to the 801 building community as well.
I'm confident that ZAC feels the same way and that we will see responsible
action and assistance on their part.

Fred,
Since you're still assembling the wing, why not put the .040 under the skin?
I've been thinking about this since your post and don't see why it wouldn't
work. It would look a lot neater. I plan to have a close look before I
complete the upper skin and will likely follow your example.

Regarding reinforcement of walk-up area
It was me that posted a message a while back about my conversation with
Zenith at Oshkosh. They agreed that the "no step" area on HD and HDS models,
(don't know the thickness on the new XL) was sort of borderline, and that
they had increased the thickness on the demo planes due to the large amount
of people boarding and un-boarding. Please don't confuse this with the
entire walk-up area which to my knowledge has not been a problem. Bill
Morelli has pictures and text about beefing up this trailing edge "no step
area" on his web site.

Subject: | Brake Line - Bulkhead Question |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Don Honabach" <don@pcperfect.com>
Hey Guys,
I'm looking at the semi-rigid Nylon type brake line that ZAC includeds
with the kit and the associated fittings. I'd like to install a fitting
on the bottom wing so that a heavy duty hose (or maybe even the plastic
tubing) can be used to connect to the wheels. That way, if the outside
portion gets damaged I don't have to worry about accessing the internal
wing plumbing.
I'm assuming I need some sort of bulkhead type fitting but I'm at loss
for which one and how it would install. This seems like it should be
easy, but I just don't see how to do it with the existing fittings and
none of the ones I see in the catalogs seem to make sense either.
Thanks in advance....

I have the so called old Stratus throttle setup where the throttle springs
pull the throttle full open (push for on, pull for off).
In my opinion, that is the only way to go. If you have a throttle linkage
break, best to have the throttles go full open. You can always then cut the
ignition when you see that a suitable landing site is in reach.

You might want to find a local supplier of Swagelok fittings. They make a good
selection of fittings, in aluminum, and they make bulkhead unions that allow
you to have rigid aluminum tubing inside the airplane and flexible thick-wall
Nylon outside the wing.

Hi all,
I am looking into a variety of kits and for obvious reason the Zodiac is
very interesting. One question
I have is concerning the adjustability of seating in the 601. My wife and I
have no problem in the 152
moving the seat back and forth to accomodate our difference in height, which
is a full 12 inches. How
would this be achieved in the 601? It appears that the seat is fixed in
position as it is structural to the
fuselage.
Thanks for your help!

Hi all,
Here is another prospective buyers question: Which one of the 601 models
will offer the best performance
for cross country cruise speed? I am confused as to if the newer XL model
and its wing will perform better
than the older HDS model. Let's just assume both planes are powered using
the Rotax 912.
Thanks!

Hi,
Here is yet another in my parade of questions: How do current fliers of the
601 deal with glare and sun issues?
I am sure owners of the Zodiac, RV and all other bubble style cockpits have
addressed this issue. I have always
flown planes with a covered roof and the ability to lower a sun visor when
the sunset or sunrise glare is right in my eyes.
Thanks!

The only real way to adjust the seats is by using padding. You can also
adjust the depth of the seat bottom during construction. I saw a shorter
builder that made his seat deep, and then put styrofoam in the bottom,
because he wanted to be able to accomodate taller passengers and pilots.

You can design any kind of roof you like in paint. I did. You will
probably do a better job than I did. You should stick up a masking tape
outline and sit in the plane and see how it is. I didn't.

Subject: | Rotax 912S cooling problem. "Boiling over"; looking for suggestions? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "royt.or" <royt.or@netzero.net>
Hi,
I've started testing my Rotax 912S and run into a problem. I've mounted the slightly
larger 912S Rotax oil cooler in the original Zenith position, below the
PRSU. I've mounted a rotax radiator in the cowl on the right side of the engine.
I built a plenum (? box) which directs air from a 3.5 inch SCAT hose through
the radiator. The 3.5 inch SCAT hose has a funnel shaped intake at the front
of the cowling. The top of the radiator is below the expansion tank on top of
the 912S.
I have a 3 (tapered) blade Warp propeller, set to 15 degrees I think. Max RPM with
plane secured is 5000. EIS for engine instruments.
When I run the engine at 3500RPM or more, as it heats up, the radiator cap on the
expansion tank opens, over filling the coolant bottle and making LOTS of steam.
I've adapted a hose on my vent which I run to the left wing, allowing earlier
detection and reducing the mess as well as reducing the dramadramatic. The
radiator cap opens as the CHT readings reach 80C. I've installed a coolant temperature
sensor at the outlet of the radiator and it indicates 50-55C when this
happens. When the engine cools, it pulls a pint or more of coolant back into
the circuit from the coolant recovery bottle. This happened initially with
the cowl on. Most of my test since then have been with the cowl off. I believe
I've purged the system of air. I'm near Portland, Oregon where the temp's have
been around 40F.
I plan to try a new radiator cap. Any other suggestions/ideas?

Roy Thoma
