Don, I'm 6' 1" and moved the rudder pedal bearing blocks 1 1/4" forward on
the floor skin. Also, (with Chris's approval, I moved the seat pan 1" inch
rearward. This meant moving the attachment pieces (L and Channel stock
mostly) that secure the pan to the fuselage side skins, etc. It's a "fit
as you go" project, but simple. Secure the seat pan, then align the other
things that fit to the pan location as needed. So,... I got a total of 2
1/4" of extra leg room. Oh... by extending the distance rearward of seat
pan, you will need to make a new pair of side skins for your center Stick
channel, again a simple job.
Don't do any "modifications" without Chris's approval. Send a request to
him by fax for his approval. I sent him a drawing of what I wanted to do
and he "approved it" and added a couple of comments.
The additional leg room feels good to me!

The "moving the seat pan back 1 inch" comment on my previous posting was NOT
the standard "tall pilot" change of parts that mealy leans you further back.
The CENTER of the bottom of the pan is moved back 1". (you do use the "Tall
pilot" optional parts from Zenith though) Merely leaning you back more
gives more clearance under the bubble canopy, but does not give more leg
room. You must move the center of the bottom of the seat pan and/or move
the petal blocks to get more leg room.

Thanks Fred and Bryan. I hadn't considered the "other than straight on"
impact.
I went out and checked the seatbelts on my '99 Silverado and they locked
up when I gave them a quick tug. The belts on my '89 Escort unreeled
freely with the same quick tug. Now I'm wondering if the automobile
manufacturers had to use the better reels after a certain year model.
I think I'll make a trip to the local junkyard and perform the "quick
tug" test on a couple of late model cars.

I'm not worried too much about complexity of the seatbelt, but weight
would certainly be a factor. I try and use the old test where you take
any part that you want to add to your airplane outside and toss it into
the air. If it falls back to the ground on it's own, it's too heavy.
However... a simple lapbelt doesn't give enough protection and a
standard 3 or 4 point harness is too confining. I'd like to be able to
move around a little while still wearing the shoulder harness.
What did you use on your plane George?

I am 6.0 ft even. I moved the pedals forward 40mm. That was max to avoid
hitting firewall with brake cylinders.

Military aircraft with "inertia" shoulder harnesses also have a manual lock.
On UH1 Helicopers, locking it was part of most emergency procedures.

Hello from St.Jacob Illinois. My name is Bo Hillebrand and your story sounds like
mine.
I bought the plans in !992. I built the wings and then by now guess what ?I have
built the fusalage it is on wheels all complete up to firewall.
Now "only 11 years latter" i'll go back to building the tail feathers the flaps
and the slats. I started to build the flaps and got all the way to skinning them
and just couldn't get the skins to wrap correctly so I stopped .aaaaThat
was in 1996.
Now I think I'll just buy the rest of the parts and finish the plane.

My story is a bit long winded but I will prece it as best I can
1. I purchased CH701 plans in 1990 after several year of consideration -
then along came an opportunity to purchase a C150 so the CH701 was shelved.
2. 1996 sold the C150 and purchased a C210 which I kept for about 4 years -

Well I have been very slow to get going, cut the first requirements from
across the sheet only to find I should had cut all the long lengths first,
so I catalogued every item and sorted by thickness and Length and things are
going much better - especially my understanding.
I followed the ZAC advise and started at the wings ( I think it would have
been easier to start on the tail) anyhow I have everything cut for the
wings, the spars and ribs are drilled and ready for priming - so the fun is
about to begin.
Any advise will be well received.
The attached pictures were taken 27 Jan 03, both wings are now ready to
assemble

another important point--- all military aircraft that
I have been around use a lap belt which the pilot
wears snug-- and the shoulder harness attaches to the
belt---- NOT like the contiuious loop system used
in automobiles---- HOW WOULD AN AUTOMOBILE TYPE
seatbelt keep you in the seat during negitive g's???
