Bill,
While installing the rear channels to my right wing I had them clecoed together
for quite a while with 7V6-3 inside the channels or visable from the leading
edge of the wing. While assembling the skeleton again after zinc chromating the
parts I realized in the drawing that they were on the trailing edge side of
the channel. I assembled it according to the drawing
but thought it made more sense and looked better the way you did it. My opinion
is its no problem structurally but of course ask Nick at Zenith. If you change
it now it might throw off all your rivet lines in your skin at the channels.
And while I have your attention, when are you going to update your web site.
I have copied your work bench exactly, and have been using many of your construction
pics as reference while assembling.
As a matter of fact I'm working on the wing tip right now and have printed and
posted on a board about 8 pics from your site as a reference while I'm doing this.
I have found your site and Gary Limings site the best references on the Web for
my project and would like to thank you both for sharing your ideas and projects
with us.
I am taking hundreds of digital pics of my project and hope to do the same in the
near future.

Having pulled out my old "Speedway Motors" catalog, I
realized that when I built my 701 I had ordered the
"Hooker" brand seat builts from Zenair, as I couldn't
make my mind up as to which one to order from
"speedway"--- I was very pleased with the ones from
Zenair-----
This time I will order the "latch and link" type
from "Speedway" as they have the "aircraft type" latch
available---

601 Stratus builders,
I'm in the process of making the jig to weld up the
Stratus engine mount and notice more than a few of you
have groused over the propeller and spinner being offset due to
the drive prop shaft being left of engine-center (viewed from the rear).
Because the prop still turns clockwise and the reacting torque
left, a per plans 3-degree offset to the right at 21" (engine length) puts
the prop about 1" to the right and would seem to over compensate for the
10 to 15mm left of center prop that's being reported.
My intent is to turn the engine at a mid point that makes
the 3-degrees and centers the prop on the cowl.
Have I missed anything here or is there something else
one needs to know about the Stratus type engine mount on a 601?
The engine mount drawings don't get into offset or distance
engine to firewall, so I'm curious how some of you scratch
builders got thru this one.
Thanks for your input here.

I can't comment on the offset in the mount, since I bought mine from Zenith.
I can tell you that both the Stratus-powered CH601HDS, and Lycoming-powered
CH2000 that I fly require lots of right rudder during takeoff and climbout.

Subject: | 601 FTT Stabilizler Fiberglass Tips |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: ac6qj@earthlink.net
Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on a poor fitting fiberglass stabilizer
tip pieces...
I received my FFT fiberglass stabilizer tips this week after a 3
month wait while these items were on back order. The FFT tips fit is
a little bit loose but may snug up when cleco fastened but I'm almost
certain that it is going to require at least one extra rivet top and
bottom tighten the fit. The size appears to be off when checking the
cord length where the FTT is 15 mm shorter than the combined
elevator/stabilizer (which was made from factory formed parts). Have
other 601 builders experienced this?
If so, has anyone built up the chord length so that the tip of the
ftt is even with the trailing edge of the elevator? If so, what
process was used to lengthen the ftt?
After waiting three months after kit delivery and two months after
otherwise completing the elevator / stabilizer, I'm not too excited
about returning these to ZAC and incurring further delay so I'm
interested in exploring viable alternatives.

All my fiberglass parts for my 801 were marginal to poor in quality too so
don't feel bad. I had to use several more rivets to pull mine out tight and
the profiles were not too close either. Also mine were short in overall
length by 10-20 mm. I did feather all my tips in with aerodynamic filler [
Good quality bondo]. I have to admit the finished look is very nice. Count
your blessing because on 801's we have Fiberglass parts on the wing tips,
horizontal stabilizer, flaperons and both ends of the leading edge slats. One
place we really need something is on top of the rudder. I did seal the flat
top of mine up so water/snow other crud could not run down into the innerds.

Ray: If I recall correctly the length of the fiberglass tips are shorter than
the combined length of the stabilizer/elevator.( I think this is mentioned in
the manual) My tips seemed way to narrow in height to fit the ends of the
stab. I even thought of making a rib to spread it apart before riveting. Gave
up on that idea and just riveted them on. Guess what? It all worked out as
advertised. Give it a try.

Ray,
I installed the retrofit FFT kit on mine a while back. Tonight I dug
out the Information Sheet dated 02/98 that came with the kit. Among other
things, it says "The Elevator will fit in between the Fiberglass Tips, the
trailing edge of the elevator is not flush with the end of the Fiberglass
Tips. " My tail is stored away but I remember that it came out like yours.
I don't know the reason Chris did it this way, but it seems to make sense
that there is a little less chance of the fairing interfering with the
elevator movement in this configuration.

Thanks to all for the great advice! The height is were my concern
is. I considered making a rib to spread the fiberglass too but based
on all the advice, I'll just go ahead and install them. Thanks again
to all!
