I believe the reason for this is when Zenith drew the plans for a new model
(such as the XL) they re-used a significant number of parts from previous
models. The previous model drawing numbers on the labels. The parts-list
that was shipped with the kit should have a cross reference (new drawing
numbers to label numbers) and you can write the new numbers on when doing an
inventory.

Sorry for the wrong post below. It was a long day of installing, removing,
and re-installing clecos.
Larry, I posted the exact opposite of what you should have done for the
rudder nose skin. It has been a few months since I did my rudder and I was
kind of tired when I typed the email! Good luck with your fix. I am going
slow on the elevator right now so I don't ruin any parts I've made -
especially the skin.
One tip I discovered - Zenith has updated the Photo manuals for the 601XL on
the web. They were much better than what Zenith mailed to me a few months
ago with my plans.
Take care,

Larry:
I'm going to take a wild guess as to what happened. Did you drill and cleco
the nose skin under the rudderskin first? You are supposed to drill and
cleco it on the outside of the rudder skin, then remove it, trim it, then
tuck it under for the final installation.
Let me know if this helps.

Well, Ive just screwed up my rudder nose skin. I mounted it and drilled it
yesterday and when I removed it, much to my horror discovered that the edge
distance for the holes varied between 3mm at the top and 5mm at the bottom.
Not going to work. Im trying to analyze what happened. It fits tight to
the ribs. At first I thought that sliding the skin toward the top of the
rudder would help, but I only gain about 2mm by doing that for a uniform 6mm
edge distance with careful placement. Perplexed at this point. The part is
clearly junk, but I need to figure out what happened before I go after a
second attempt. Ill call Zenith on Monday. Maybe the skin is too small?
Has anyone else run into this? Does anyone know the max distance along the
front face of the spar from the bottom of the spar to the bottom edge of the
nose skin.

Larry, Scott,
I'm doing a 701, and the problem is the same, mostly. That is, how to locate
reference points that are covered by skin.
A useful method used by A&Ps in some cases, is to tape a piece of velum to
the structure, measure, and mark it in pencil to lay out the location of
future holes, edges, corners, whatever,, then fold the velum back at the tape
edge, fit the skin in place,, and fold the velum back over the skin. You can
see through the velum, and it helps you to transfer the needed reference
points to the skin.
It was a great help as the horizontal stab and elevator went together here.
Velum is a stiff, strong, see through paper, used in drafting. Carried by
some office supply and copy stores. Not to expensive, and a sheet or two goes
a long way. Roll it up for transport. And it comes in LARGE sizes, good for
our projects.
Hope this will assist.
