Subject: Elevator UP stop and cable tension
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Michel Therrien <mtherr@yahoo.com> Hello gang, My manual mention that we should install small L stiffeners on the fiberglass saddle to make the elevator stop. I don't really like to rely on that saddle. Are there other ways of making an elevator up stop? The cable tension on my elevator varies (a lot) as I move the elevator. I have 25 lbs full down and more than 40 lbs full up. Others have that kind of situation? It looks like it would tend to peel the saddle from the stabilizer. I'll probably put a stop in front of the bellcrank before it's done. Directionally, this would seem better. If you've 40 lbs tension, I'd recommend you lower that to 30. I don't think the 601 is built for a 40 lb static load on the cables, and that would especially include the rudder. Regards, Larry McFarland

Kinda sloppy for cables..

    Subject: Elevator UP "Stop"
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Fred or Sandy Hulen" <hulens61@birch.net> I installed a "stop" from side to side at the rearward travel of the stick in the center stick console (near the top edge). I used .060 material to make a shallow "U" shape the width of the stick channel. Then attached a 1/2" wide strip of 1/4" Delrin (using 4 small bolts) to the leading edge of the "U" piece (going side to side) so the stick would never hit metal to metal. After carefully adjusting the cable tension, and determining the correct "stop position", I then riveted this assembly to each side. Works great and my EAA Technical Councilor thought it far better than to rely on a fiberglass form in the rear as the stop. Fred Jab 3300, 601HDS, N601LX

Subject: Trouble with building 601 ailerons
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Mark Stauffer <mark.stauffer@comcast.net> Fellow 601 XL builders, I'm at my wits end! I've got 7 hours in one aileron and haven't drilled a single hole! This is a good thing though since the aileron tip does not line up. I have several questions. 1. Did you have to do some additional trimming of the skin to get the tip rib to fit correctly? 2. Was your top skin longer than in the drawings? My is 8mm longer. Did you trim it or just place the excess under the wing top skin? 3. When you measured (from the inboard edge) did you come up with a 45 degree angle for the tip? If not what did you use, the measurements or the angle? Where did you measure your angle from the top or bottom. 4. Does anyone have the steps they went through to finish the aileron? Yes, I've downloaded the updated the manual pages. Zenith even faxed me a new drawing (6W2-3 Aileron Tip dtd. 03/06/03) but unfortunately it still doesn't solve my questions. 5. Did anyone else receive a skin where the inboard trailing edge was not square? I ended up filing it down to bring to square. Yes, I checked both edges of both skins to see if I could swap them, unfortunately I couldn't. I have more questions concerning the placement of the rivets but I'll leave that for another message. I've really hit a wall with these ailerons. Something is just not clicking. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!! Mark 601XL Tail and flaps finished. Banging head on bench with ailerons. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Michel Therrien <mtherr@yahoo.com> HA! I spent my entire day working on this. I initially found that attachment point on the upper elevator horn was 2mm farther than the one on the lower horn... I made a new horn and then a third one. AND NOW, I found THE problem... I'm using shackles and turnbuckles instead of the self-made ones as per the plans. It turns out that the edge distance at the lower attachment point on the control yoke is too large and the cable interferes with the control. See: http://pages.infinit.net/mthobby/dcp02077.jpg So, I still have one question left (the elevator stop). Michel :) ===== ---------------------------- Michel Therrien CH601-HD http://mthobby.pcperfect.com/ch601 http://www.zenithair.com/bldrlist/profiles/mthobby http://pages.infinit.net/mthobby http://platinum.yahoo.com

This is my first year at Sun n Fun as a Zenith builder and I would love to meet others. I'll be there 2, 3, and 4 April. Mark 601XL Tail and flaps finished. --> Zenith-List message posted by: CLOJAN@aol.com Mark: You are sooo right! 1. Did you have to do some additional trimming of the skin to get the tip rib to fit correctly? I did a lot more trimming than I thought I should to get it to fit. 2. Was your top skin longer than in the drawings? My is 8mm longer. Did you trim it or just place the excess under the wing top skin? I think I sent you the heads up of this when I was building. Make sure you measure from the trailing edge for your rivet line or you will drill in front of the flange. I lucked out on this one! 3. When you measured (from the inboard edge) did you come up with a 45 degree angle for the tip? If not what did you use, the measurements or the angle? Where did you measure your angle from the top or bottom I used the top measurement and then trimmed the bottom to fit. 5. Did anyone else receive a skin where the inboard trailing edge was not square? I ended up filing it down to bring to square. Yes, I checked both edges of both skins to see if I could swap them, unfortunately I couldn't Yes, when I used the block to set the washout the edges were off by only a few mm and I did take the file to it. I think I also mentioned that the hole drilled in the horn for the trim tab is off by a couple of mm and if you follow the drawing you will be making that part again. Check it carefully with the clevis before you start. One thing I have found really helpful is the new posting of the updates on the builders site. It contains a list of the mistakes in the drawings that Zenith has found for each section. I wish it was posted when I started the project. Most of the things that I was cursing at are corrected. The ailerons were the worst part yet for not matching the instructions. I just made things work. I won't know if I was successful until I finish the wings.
