Robert,
I encountered this when I was installing the "U" channels (7V11-4K). I
talked to Nick at ZAC and he said to drill out the existing rivets to
install the "U" channel, & not to change the location of the U channel or
add unnecessary holes in the spar. That's what I did and it worked fine.

> List . . . On my Edition 4 plans for the 701, wing dwg. 7-V-11, there are
several rib channels (vertical U shaped pieces) which attach to the rear
ribs No. 1 and 2 and the main spar to laterally hold the fuel tank in
place. The U channel that is on the outboard side of rear rib No. 1 and to
the rear of the spar as shownin the lower left of dwg. 7-V-11, second plan
detail up, is indicated to be at Station 300. The rib itself is attached at
Station 280. At station 300, the factory has already riveted the spar root
doubler (7V3-2SP) to the spar. There no room to move the rib channel
outboard as there is lightening hole immediately adjacent. It would appear
that the four middle A5 rivets that the factory installed attaching the
doubler to the spar should be temporarily removed so that this U channel can
be put in place and then re-rivetted. This doesn't seem right - why would
the factory install the rivets in the first place? Have any of you run into
this problem or am I!

were on their way to Sun n Fun and wouldn't be available with an answer for
up to two weeks. Thanks for your help. Robert Schoenberger, 701 tail

We had the same problem in that oil temps were running low in the Denver, CO
winter. We asked Pete if we could bypass the oil cooler by running the
"out" side of the oil filter to the "in" side. He agreed that was a good
fix. We did so and oil temps went back to the correct range. The second
flight in that configuration was during 60F+ temps so temps ran on the high
side and we had to change it back. Now if we can figure out how to change
it with valves we won't have to take the cowling off and switch hoses.
My question Bob is "How did you modify your oil cooling circuit"?

What about some sort of baffle to restrict the airflow across the cooler?

Subject: | 701 Fuel Tank U channel. |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: RURUNY@aol.com
Robert,
Installing the U channel for my right wing I found the same rivets installed
in the spar by Zenith techs. I looked it over carefully and then drilled out
the rivets. I back-drilled
through those holes into the U channel and then riveted.
I have the rudder, elevator, stabilizer done. Working right wing also now. I
have all skins drilled and clecoed, wing tip done. Working on root skin cuts,
and will open top skin to install tanks, main and aux tank. Left wing will go
quick as all parts fabricated for right were fabricated for left. I have lots
of pics of construction. If you need to see any of particular assembly I
will send them.

Brian . . . Thanks. I think I'm okay for now. Wow - you wife must really
love you to have the stab and elevator in the living room!! Tell her she
gets my vote. Robert

my 4th ed. plans, dated 10-01, show 2 "U" channel on each rib, and 1
"L"(7v6-3 actually) on each rib. The "L" is positioned up close to the spar,
but is riveted to the rib. Is this difference due to another design
change? And I cant help but wonder now if I should do it this way, or try to
get the "latest and greatest" revision. Also I hav'nt got to this point yet
so maybee I just dont see the problem yet. Anyone care to thow in there 2
cents?

Subject: | 701 General questions |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Walt Cannon" <grnlake@earthlink.net>
Greetings all,
I have a couple of general questions for you 701/912 and 912S owners:
1) Anyone concerned about not having carb heat? Do this engines need it
given that they are picking up warm air from inside the cowl?
2) Is anyone using the Rotax "tuned air box" on the 912S? Does it have
provisions for carb heat?
3) What size "amp-hours" and weight battery are you using for a good CG
location. Mounted behind the large access panel or way aft in the tailcone
like the latest drawings from ZAC show?
4) Has anyone actually installed a 912S with the new "high torque" starter.
Did you take the ZAC precautions to insure it cleared the motor mount? Any
issues?
5) How about cabin heat? Anyone used the ZAC shroud? Does it work? Anyone
accomplish the heating with water and a heat exchanger?
6) I don't really like the idea of those DZUS fasteners on the cowl with the
angles supporting the F/G inside. Why wouldn't a big access door on top of
the upper cowling work, with some nice stainless screws and nutplates
securing the F/G to the skin in front of the firewall?
All comments welcomed on or off the list.
Thanks,
Walt Cannon

Subject: | Holes / Access Panel Instrument Panel |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Don Honabach" <don@pcperfect.com>
Hey Guys,
After trying to crawl under the instrument panel today, it's obvious
that unless I shrink in a major way, working under the panel in any real
way just isn't going to happen.
Has any one installed access holes or similiar to provide access to the
instrument panel area? Any problems with doing so? Just seems like a
shame to have to de-rivet for any minor work or inspection.
Thanks,
Don Honabach

Don:
I have installed an access panel in the upper forward skin. It spans the
distance between the left and right fuel tank supports( 6-F-12-5). The aft
edge of the cutout is just forward of the instrument bulkhead. The forward
edge sort of follows the contour of the front canopy tube. I made the cutout
in the forward upper skin, then traced the cutout contour on another piece
of aluminum for the access panel. I made a doubler of .040 to surround the
cutout and installed 8-32 nutplates to retain the access panel.
I couldn't resist gilding the lily, so I made a plenum for the under side of
the access panel and cut a couple of slots near the forward edge of the
panel for defog air outlets. I got a one inch flange from ACS to let warm
air into the plenum. So far I haven't installed the cabin heat system so I
can't offer any details of how the defog air gets directed to the plenum. I
got the basic idea for the access panel from Jeff Small. He has good
pictures of his access panel, which is simpler and lighter than mine.
I hope this gives you some useful ideas.
George
