I did the same. I lost count of the occasions, where I had the top skin off
in order to work on the panel. It's a pain in the back to put all the
rivnuts in, but well worth the time.

This is what I did with my landing gear for my 601XL. I used a router with a
1/4 mill bit and cut a grove along the back edge to take the line. Change
the bit to a 1/2 roundover and knocked of a few edges and it looks great. As
for strength, I took out less material in all compared to the chamfered edge
on the stock supplied one and by running the grove along the back edge it is
stronger then Gun drilling.
