There may be an explanation on the Zenith website -- maybe in the 'tutorial' lessons from C.H....? -- Grant Corriveau C-GHTF / HDS / CAM100 > --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Aaron" > > Doesn't putting the cowl under the skin go against aerodynamic principals? > What reason would there be to do such. Wood" If you go through some of Chris's writings, (I can not remember just witch one but I would start at the ZAC web site) he talks about the comparison of overlap into the wind Vs overlap with the wind. He suggests using overlap into the wind on some of the 601 parts. He explains that while this at first sounds like it would produce more drag, that having a sharp edge (the edge of the metal) downwind creates more drag from the turbulence than having a small high pressure area with smooth flow in front of the upwind facing edge. The theory is that if the foreward skin overlaps the rearward one, the air gets separated and causes more turbulence and drag than the other way. One other reason why he puts the cowl inside the fuse skin. You should see the XL at Midland. I don't argue with Chris! The first time you chop the power to idle and thing almost drops out of the sky (compared to swifter designs or even a 152) you will realise that most of the easy drag reduction conversations are irrelevant. This is not necessarily a bad thing, the 601 is awesome at getting into short stips over tall trees and with 100hp has tremendous ability to get out of them too. The thick wings give a LOT of baggage room. How you fit the cowl is simply a case of what will fit and provide easy access, forget about drag unless you are going to spend hundreds of hours more to get another 10mph. I remember from while back that Walmart had the appropriate items. Can someone remind me of the required size and load range? Do Walmart do tubes as well or should I re-use after 31/2 years of flying? I didn't remember if the one I used at the workshop did, but it was probably noisy enough I wouldn't have noticed. The bad thing is always having to unplug the rivet puller if I don't want the compressor cycling. Craig "Steve Dixon" To: Sent by: cc: owner-zenith-list-server@ma Subject: Zenith-List: ZAC Pneumatic Rivet Puller tronics.com 05/09/03 08:47 PM Please respond to zenith-list --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Steve Dixon" I recently bought one of the rivet pullers ZAC sells, and it continually leaks a small amount of air through the system. It produces an audible hiss as long as it is connected to an air line. In spite of this it seems to work just fine. I need to determine if the hiss is normal in which case I can learn to ignore it, or if I should contact ZAC and make arrangements to return it before too much time goes by. I previously had one of the Harbor Freight pullers which didn't leak at all. Has anyone else had this experience with a ZAC puller? Of course they are marked "Not for highway service" or NHS, so you shouldn't land on the highway with them. Other than that they are a bargain. I got my tubes at a tire store. Here's those Carlyle 480-8 wheelbarrow tires. The wheelbarrow tires are about 3 or 4 pounds: http://www.tiresunlimited.com/carlisle_wheelbarrow_and_smooth.htm The smooth-tread whelbarrow tire looks pretty cool: http://www.tiresunlimited.com/images/carlisle_specialty/smooth.jpg Here's the Carlyle 480-8 trailer tire. These 6 or 8 pounds each: http://www.tiresunlimited.com/carlisle_usa_trail.htm I just bought some 480-8's from America's Tire Store for about $25 each. These weigh in at about 6 pounds each. They ordered them out of the Greenball catalog (any tire store should have that catalog) http://www.greenball.com/tires/biastrailer.htm# Rick P. installing tires and wheels tomorrow.
