    Subject: Building Question
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bill Richter" <wrichter@aristotle.net> Hi List, has anyone information concerning the possibility of not riveting the fiberglass wing tip on the HDS models, but instead using screws in order to have access to the strobe power supply boxes? I am interested in opinions with regards to this subject. Especially what type of nut could be used to attach to the fiberglass tip. Surely you would not want to use a U-type speed nut because it would create a small bumps under the skin. And if you use an Anchor nut you would still have small bumps under the skin with the attaching plate. The nut would have to be something that is permanently positioned on the backside of the fiberglass tip. Looking forward to your suggestions. Bill 40+% HDS Do not Archive

Countersink the #3 rivets into the fiberglass and the tip skin will remain smooth. From: "Don Honabach" <don@pcperfect.com>
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Don Honabach" <don@pcperfect.com> Bill, There are nut plates (Click Bond Fasteners - pg. 103 on 2003 ACS catalog) that use glue to attach instead of rivets and were designed for exactly what you want to do. A bit expensive though - around $5 a piece. With that said, I would put the strobe power box at the center/outboard wing junction point instead for easier maintenance/inspection and the lights can be changed by unscrewing the screw that holds the strobe/light combo together. Subject: Recall on some 601 Elevator Hinge Pins
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "W.R. \"Gig\" Giacona" <wr.giacona@cox-internet.com> I just noticed this in the builders section at zenithair.com. Seems a vendor substituted aluminum pins for the stainless steel ones that are spec. Here's a quote: It was recently discovered that several batches of piano hinges (for the 6 ft. elevator hinge 6T2-5) were supplied with aluminum hinge pins, despite being labeled stainless steel (s/s). The elevator hinge requires that a stainless steel pin be used, and the supplier has agreed to drop ship replacement stainless steel pins to all builders who took delivery of a kit (with the elevator) between January 2002 and April 2003. /End Quote/ Here's the link to the notice http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/data/601-hinge-pin.pdf This link is a PDF document thatb shows how to test to see which you have and a form to get a replacement. -- Gig Giacona Visit my 601XL site at: www.peoamerica.net/N601WR

--> Zenith-List message posted by: Fred Poor <fredspoor2002@yahoo.com> I am doing the following on my XL-- mounting the power supply on the forward side of the outbd spar tip assy-- access would be through the fiberglass wing tip EXCEPT I'm building mine out of aluminum. Puting in an oval access panel in "what would be the fiberglass wingtip"--- the reson for it being oval, is so I can mount the nutplates ON THE PANEL, install the panel UNDER the skin and secure with screws----- my reason for this approach is: " I can bring the panel home to change nutplates, if one should go bad"------------ I'd never use the "glue on type"--- "fred" do not archive __________________________________
