Hi Sports Fans,
For those interested, I am in Italy now preparing for this weekend's
Piccola Schneider Cup race.
As usual, getting to Italy may have been the hardest part. I flew the
Zenair CH601XL on amphibious floats up to 10,000 feet over the Alps.
Last year [Chip] we prepared a 601XL with the Jabiru 120hp engine for
the race, but the race was cancelled. This year we have the 601XL with
the Rotax 100hp engine. And we are testing the new Woodcomp 2-blade
carbon, electric in-flight adjustable and REVERSING propeller. If I
don't win, I will at least have the easiest aircraft to park!
See our web site for photos of the race aircraft. What this space for
updates.

Biggest piece of advice I can give anyone, if you don't have to make a cowl,
Don't.
I spent six months making the form, laying up the cowl and finishing it.
Four layers of bid cloth with Aeropoxy and overlaping at the curves about six
inches so I have eight layers on the corners. Built it on the aircraft so laying
up the cloth upside down was a real joy.
Turned out beautiful but heavy. Cut mine into three pieces, nose bowl,
bottom and top cowl. I like to see as much of the engine before flight as I can.
Now I'm replacing the top cowl with alum sheet, about 25 to 30 thousands, to
save weight. Cowls don't have to be as stiff as cast iron, just look at
production aircraft.

Guys-
I did a full throttle run yesterday with the plane tied to my truck.
My warp drive prop is at a 15 deg. pitch and my Stratus was at 4200 RPM at
full throttle. Is this about right? Should it be running at higher RPM?

Hi list members.
I have a question regarding engine cowl for my 701. When purchase in 1988,
the intension was to use the Rotax 532 engine, and the cowl I have is for
that engine.
Now that plans have changed, I will be using the Rotax 912. Would it be an
impossible task to try to change the cowling to fit for the 912?
Best wishes,
Johann G

Hello Johann
If you recall I have a Rotax 618 in my 701.
It required a significant modification to the left
side of the cowl and smaller changes to
the right side. Fiber glass is easily modified,
but as pointed out in previous messages it's a
time consuming (and messy process)

I have my 3-bladed Warp Drive pitch at 15 deg. and am getting 4200 static
RPM from my Stratus (tied to my truck). Isn't that kind of low?

Hello folks: I ran into a little problem when riveting the lower longerons to
the cabin floor. The head of the rivet gun seems to be too wide to fit
straight on the rivet due to the L angle of the longeron. The rivet line is smack
dab in the middle of the L but I will have to angle the head of the gun to set
the rivet. I am sure one of you smart Zenith builders have solved this problem.
Ideas? Thanks, Jack Russell

Jack:
I ground a flat on one side of the nose of my rivet puller.that let me get
closer to the upstanding leg of the longeron angle.

Or: try just a strip of shiny aluminum tape on the panel behind the tube.
This improves the visibility of the interface level on mine.

Just buy cheap hand riveter and file its nose smaller.
There is a lot of extra material (aluminium) to remove
(5-7mm).
