Isn't that kind of low? Maybe not. I don't have a good static RPM number for my CH601HDS, because the brakes can't hold me with more than 3000 rpm. When I start my takeoff roll, the rpm is around 4600-4800. It is about 4800 on climbout. Only in cruise at wide open throttle can I hit the 5400 rpm redline. ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 03:53:51 AM PST US From: Michel Therrien Subject: Re: Zenith-List: narrow head rivet gun? --> Zenith-List message posted by: Michel Therrien The solution has been described by Jari and George. When I did my static run up my prop was pitched at 12.5 degrees and I had 4900 rpm. The higher you make the pitch, the lower the RPM will be so your numbers may be reasonable. That sounds a little low. Temperature will cause a good deal of variation from summer to winter, but my estimation is you should be getting around 4400-4500 static if your prop is at 15 degrees with an ambient temperature of 70 to 80. Horse power may vary a bit, too. Reiner told me my Stratus produced 113 h.p. (Probably some of his b.s., but it has been a strong engine.) I just put a new engine on that is not hopped up like the Stratus. It has smaller pistons and the heads have not been shaved, but uses the Stratus intake system. It produces 4250 rpm tied up like yours in 80 degrees ambient with 15 degrees on Warp Drive prop. I estimate that it produces 90 h.p. With the valve cover off you can measure the heads and should find a width of around 3.525. Stock is around 3.575. The pistons should be .020 over for what they call the 100 hp engine. By the way was one made in Taiwan that cost US$ 2.95, we bought two of them in case we ruin one when grinding it, they even came with a 20 rivet bag, no rivets for our project of course :-) Another place I remember we found dificult to rivet was in the rear wing attanchement area, where the diagonal tube joins the rear wing support. Not to much of these type of places I can remember. I remember seeing something about two or three months ago (The Zenith monthly newsletter or Kitplane ?) where the person had a small piece of metal, not too thick which had a hole drilled through it for the shaft of the rivet. The face of this metal plug which went up against the too narrow structural member was beveled. The shank of the rivet at this face was bent slightly to allow the rivet gun to be aligned at an angle with the rivet surfact. The author said that the gun pulled the rivets perfectly even though the shank was pulled at an angle. I'm in the midst of a big project right now and can't look up the exact article. Maybe some others on the list will recall this article and can furnish some additional info. If you have money to burn I've seen a kit at Lowe's that sells for about $25 with multiple angles/attachments. No idea what the quality or usefulness is. John, the figures I wrote earlier are with a straight blade or square tipped, 70 inch Warp Drive. I added a new page describing how I made the plug for the cowling. The cowling page will be updated as I progress in completing it. (I layed up the fiberglass today) I also added a canopy page that will be updated once I get back to working on it (after I'm done with the cowling). Finally, I included some pictures of how I made the wing root filets.
