Subject: | Comp Air 7 Crash in Angleton, Texas |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Joseph Kintz <kintzjd@rocketmail.com>
The following excerpts are from this morning's edition of The Facts newspaper
of Brazoria County, Texas:
"Stephen Naypaver, 63, was killed instantly when his experimental plane
exploded after nose diving into the ground at the Brazoria County Airport, just
south of the Dow hanger. Louis Jones, director of aviation at the airport,
said Naypaver's landing looked routine until the last moments of the 10- to
15-minute flight. 'He made perfectly normal call-ins,' Jones said. 'All of a
sudden he leveled off, pitched to the left and went straight down.' Naypaver
was a former flight instructor and was constantly working on the plane, Jones
said...The plane was a Comp Air 7, which is sold as a kit by Aerocomp, based in
Merritt, Fla...The NTSB has no record of one of the planes crashing...Naypaver,
who bought the plane used about a year ago, was an experienced pilot...
Stephen Young, president of Aerocomp, quoted an 'experienced pilot' at the
Brazoria County Airport as saying Naypaver had extended the fuel tanks further
down the wings, and one tank was empty. 'When you go ahead and have that one
tank full and one tank empty, you have very poor control,' Young said. 'You
don't do a landing with that severe imbalance.'...Some people had told (Jones)
Naypaver was running one tank dry so that he could work on it...
The plane was a high-performance turbine plane with a propellor engine designed
to fly at high altitudes. (Jones) said the plane was landing straight upwind,
heading south, and he said he didn't think the stiff breeze was a contributing
factor. 'He had recently come back from Las Vegas in the same airplane,' Jones
said. 'He looked perfectly normal on landing. He was steady.'"

Yes, about two or three issues back of the EXPERIMENTER, someone had the
same problem, He took a short (I think 1/4") length of about 1/4" or so
bolt, drilled it, then ground a fairly sharp taper on one face. He inserted
the rivet into the work, slipped the spacer on the stem, and then applied
the gun.

I need a little input------ While drilling and clecoing the leading edge on my
601XL, I overlapped the top of the main spar by just a little too much, leaving
just a little too little at the overlap of the bottom of the main spar.. Ergo,
fabricate a new skin. Does anybody have a suggestion as to making the bend
in the new skin? I don't think I need the full 90 degree bend, just enough to
get a nice curve when I strap it down and drill and cleco.

Somewhere I learned that you use a piece of PVC pipe. I think that I may have
seen it in my old set of original plans for the 601HDS. For the HDS, a piece
of pipe about 4 inch in diameter is about right. Just pick the right size for
the XL wing radius. It doesn't have to be bent to a perfect fit. Just a decent
radius start that will then be pulled into place by the cargo straps.
Hope this helps,

I think you will find that you can put a LOT of force on the straps without
the wing collapsing... I think you can just pull it up with the straps and
be fine.

I built a press to bend the HD skin. See abiyt 2/3rd
down the following page for details of press, tube and
die size.

Jim:
If you decide to re-make the part, just remember the number one rule in
plans-building:
make the part a little over-sized, then trim to fit.
Good luck,

Hi Paul
One of the most innovative and simple do-it-yourself
solutions I have heard for this is to tape a sheet of
heavy plastic along the ends and edges of the aluminum
sheet (precurved a little) and then insert your vacuum
hose through through the plastic and suck the air out.
A vaccuum brake so to speak. You will have to guide
the process somewhat I am sure.
I haven't done this yet but have heard from another
builder that it works quite well. It is one of the
solutions I will be looking into later in the summer.
Good luck and please let us know how you eventually
tackle this problem. That nose skin is quite a
different beast from the HD or HDS nose skin.
