Looking at the Jabiru engine at the Skyshops site I stumbled upon the Bubble doors
for the 701. Has any 701 builders seen these up close. I was considering making
2 sets of doors,One set standard and one all lexan. I might make the all
lexan ones and purchace these. Its great to see Skyshop doing this type of stuff.

Hello list members;
I am a new member and would normally lurk but have a
question. A quick Bio. My name is Sal Capra, 46 yrs old,
married w/children....oops child just married one off.
I live in Lakeland FL and have a 1946 Aeronca Champ I love and fly.
I like a good project and enjoy the wrenching as much as the flying.
Just purchased a 601HD that is/was flying.
Its a 2001 912-80hp w/103 hours N-826W . Its on
the factory website, library #41 "another new Yellow Zodiac"
I purchased the plane with the intention of repainting the
plane (for sure) and I was "thinking" of reskining the top surface
of the wings. The wings are oil caning and the skin is loose.
As I understand it the material used with the kit was .016 and from
talking to the factory I was thinking of using .025 since I guess
this is what is used on the XL now. Keep in mind if there is a easyer
fix I am all for it :) I even though of replacing the stiffners with
ribs. I guess this is something that can happen when installing
the sheet metal.
So far I am on the fence......leave them loose and oil caning as
one friend suggested and just paint it ....or..... buy new wings
and everything in between
Any thoughts from some of you that have been here?
Thanks
Sal Capra

Subject: | BULLETIN: SCHNEIDER CUP UPDATE |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Chip W. Erwin" <aircraft@czaw.cz>
Greetings from sunny Italy.
Today was the first race of the Piccola Schneider Cup. For those who
don't know, it is a seaplane race similar to the famous seaplane races
starting about 75 years ago which lead to considerable advancements in
aviation.
Now we race with European Ultralight class aircraft. The limits are
basically UL approval in some European country, and landing and taking
off from the water. The UL float aircraft rule in Italy apply which
means 65 kph stall speed and 500kg max gross weight.
I am racing the Zenair CH601XL with the Rotax 100hp and a new 2-blade
carbon, in-flight adjustable, and REVERSING prop made by Woodcomp in the
Czech Republic. And, of course, 1150 amphib floats made by Czech
Aircraft Works. We have already received Czech certification of the
601XL as well as PFA approval in Great Britain so it is an ultralight
this side of the pond.
I was in Italy last weekend for an airshow in Ozzano and planned to stay
the entire week rather than fly across the Alps 2 extra times (at
altitudes up to 10,000 feet). But my wife had other plans as her water
broke Wednesday. So I flew the 601XL to the nearest commercial airport
in Milan and made one quick commercial flight back to Prague to watch my
son being born. Wife and baby are just fine, and now I am back to the
races.
Several competitors failed to make it to the show (as I have said
before, getting here can be just as challenging as racing). So we only
have 5 competitors. We are now match-racing 2 aircraft at a time. The
Zenair CH601XL appears to be the fastest aircraft by a small margin and
I have won my first 2 heats.
We have 6 more races tomorrow which will determine the winner. Watch
this space.
Caio,
CHIP

I don;t have my pans with me, but if I remember rght the top skins on the HD
and the HDS wings are .025, and the bottom skins are point .016. I'm sure if
I'm wrong someone will correct me!

On the HD, the nose skin is .025. For the outboard
wings, the rear skins are .016. I tried .020
aluminum on the rear top fuselage (my supplier ran out
of .016 when I bought that sheet) and I like how it is
very much. Much better feel than with the .016 skin.
However, there is 25% weight penalty for going from
.016 to .020.
Michel
PS: Updated my web site with pictures and explanation
of fiberglass cowling and de-molding process. I now
need to make the air intake openings and would
appreciate any guidelines on doing this.

From my memory only:
forward of spar (top & bottom) = .025"
aft of spar (top & bottom) = .016"
FWIW, mine is built as above per Zenair standards for 601HD, and do not "oil
can".
I have not seen your skins in action, but I probably would not change them
to a thicker gauge. Excess weight is the enemy.
