Maybe you should wait until it's on the engine to find the best location?

It's on the engines and I determined the position,
shape and size of the openings. My question relates
to the best way of making the openings. How do I mold
them, make the radius for the hole and lay-up the
fiberglass.

Brian, I built a set of all lexan doors and am very pleased with the
result. I saw the bubble doors by skyshop at sunnfun and they simply
replaced the horizontal bracing tube at the midpoint of the door with one
with a much pronounced bend in it (about 3 inch increase in elbow room).
You can easily do that yourself with the all lexan door.

Sal,
I'd suggest you remove the skins and replace them with .020 or .025. I've
put
.025 on my wings and also began by trying to use the .016 which is way too
flimsey.
Use the original skin and a hole finder strap to duplicate the pattern of
holes and
you'll be all right.

Why not go ahead and get/build a set of HDS wings? These tend to have
less oil-can issues (less area) and can be fitted with the HD version
without any major issues.

Hello list members;
I am a new member and would normally lurk but have a
question. A quick Bio. My name is Sal Capra, 46 yrs old,
married w/children....oops child just married one off.
I live in Lakeland FL and have a 1946 Aeronca Champ I love and fly.
I like a good project and enjoy the wrenching as much as the flying.
Just purchased a 601HD that is/was flying.
Its a 2001 912-80hp w/103 hours N-826W . Its on
the factory website, library #41 "another new Yellow Zodiac"
I purchased the plane with the intention of repainting the
plane (for sure) and I was "thinking" of reskining the top surface
of the wings. The wings are oil caning and the skin is loose.
As I understand it the material used with the kit was .016 and from
talking to the factory I was thinking of using .025 since I guess this
is what is used on the XL now. Keep in mind if there is a easyer
fix I am all for it :) I even though of replacing the stiffners with
ribs. I guess this is something that can happen when installing the
sheet metal.
So far I am on the fence......leave them loose and oil caning as one
friend suggested and just paint it ....or..... buy new wings and
everything in between
Any thoughts from some of you that have been here?
Thanks

I don't want to sound repetitive but am still concerned about the close proximity
of the radiator hoses to the exhaust pipes in the 912 S installation in
my 701. I posed the question about a week ago with no response. Has not anyone
had the same engine/airframe combination? Or is there nothing to worry about?
I do plan to wrap the pipes with an exhaust pipe wrap but is that enough protection?

After about 6 years I finally reached the point where I can sit in my
601HDS plane and make engine noises. I'm sure if anyone saw me they'd
think I'm insane, but it's an absolute awesome feeling to sit in
something that you've built and at this point know that you'll be flying
soon as well. Just wish I could take a month or so off and tackle the
other 90% left to do.
If you are at about the same point, you might want to take some time and
pre-wire the center wing for fuel lines, electrical wire, pitot/static,
brake lines, etc. before being tempted to close stuff up and get the
plane on it's wheels. Also, you might want to complete the build on a
low table so you can remove the firewall which gives me great access to
the cockpit area for wiring and such as needed.

First I want to thank all those that have responded. Keep the
ideas and opinions coming. I talked to my RV / A&P guru
today and leaning towards .025 reskin. The wings are off and
the plane is home in the shop.
But to answer your question, I think I would like to solve this
issue and then look for a set of HDS wings to build. I did notice someone
had a set on the list forsale. The only issue is the plane would no
longer fit "Sport Pilot" or would it?? Right now I am gonna take a
cheap way out and see how I like the plane. The hot setup would be
XL wings.

Sal,
One thing to keep in mind is that if you re-skin the wings using the
existing holes from the old skins you'll most likely end up with oil
canning even with the newer thicker skins. Probably not as bad though.
To really get rid of it, you'll need to adjust the skin so everything is
taught.
As for the XL wings, unfortunately that requires a whole new
fuselage/center wing.
As for the HDS wings, if you bought a wing kit from ZAC, it wouldn't be
that much more difficult than re-skinning your current HD wings and
you'd have two wing sets for your plane.
Regards,
Don

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reference to the page for info on restraint info. Sure wish
I could go to the Sentimental Journey. That's a LONG way from here, but
then again, so was Sun n Fun for you. I will get downstairs and start on
the belt restaraints. I bought a $49 chop saw from Harbor Freight and it
does a great job on stainless steel. I couldn't fabricate a thing withour
it. Don't know how I did without it.
I am planning on putting my gascolators on the floor in front of the main
spar, just in front of the control stick. I thought they would be in the
way of my feet, but they are tucked down so far you can't hit them by
accident. I will send a pix. I find that I have little room for the vacuum
filter except between the brake pedals, on the firewall. THere seems to be
less and less room as you get toward the end of the mounting process. THe
only good news is that you are further along toward completion and FLYING!
Thanks again.
Ron

And if you do this, rememebr that splice plates are unique to your spar. So
if you are going to have ZAC make new wing spars for you make sure you send
them your old splice plates so they can get the par dillings just right.

For those of you that are using the Stratus Subaru EA-81, what did you
use to connect to the included engine sensors? Mykal at Stratus e-mailed
me back and said to just use a fast-on tab like connector, but it would
seem like there is a special mating connector for these sensors and
wanted to see what others are doing.
Thanks!
