There are at least two different designs for dual sticks - I have installed
dual sticks in my 601 with a few additional mods of my own so it can be don
quite easily.

I've seen mods that had dual sticks instead of the "Y" stick and have
thought about it as I intend to do light IFR and having my right hand
available would be nice.
Not that I have a problem with the "Y". As a matter of fact I kind of
liked it during my demo ride.
I just think for IFR dual sticks and a center mounted throttle would
work better.
Does anyone have any plans for dual stick mods avaialble.

Nah, can't be bothered with that, Don. After all the pain to get this
far, it should be a snap to just solve the problem of how to fly without
a prop.

I thought on earlier thread that you mentioned hooking directly from the
battery to the starter with a good guage of wire (4 or 2GA) and that
didn't help. Could it be that your starter is marginal/bad?
As a side note, you could also just change the POH -
Cold Weather Starting
- Remove Prop
- Start Engine
- Get a cup of coffee
- Go to the bathroom and read latest Kit Planes
- Stop Engine
- Install Prop
- Go Fly

Don

Hi Phil
Unloading the starter motor by removing
the prop. has prompted me to respond. (Some questions
arise which may have already been answered earlier)
So for my contribution (FWIW):
I understand that starting of the 912S is very specific
on the minimum crankshaft RPM during start. All this comes
from that starter motor which very much depends on
your electrical system.
Just how far is the battery located from the starter
motor in terms of return cable run ?
What is the starter motor cable size ?
How good are the cable terminations - do they get warm
to touch after a few cranking attempts ?
Did you use the ROTAX starter contactor supplied with the
912S ?
Is there any other contactor or relay in the high
current starting circuit ?
Is your battery new and have you checked its discharge
performance ?
(I understand that a larger capacity starter motor
is available for the 912S)

Dave,
You guys are GREAT!! I've knocked back just about every suggestion that
has been made because I've already tried them yet you STILL keep trying
to help. You are all bloody fantastic. Now I think I have some (good???)
news.
A few people have queried whether or not the problem may be with the
prop. I have always assumed not since it is the 3-blade Warp Drive as
recommended by ZAC. Finally, after trying everything else, I pulled the
prop off tonight. I didn't have another prop to fit and I know it's not
recommended to run the engine without a prop because of the risk of
overspeeding. I removed the throttle springs which cause the default to
full throttle in the event of a cable breakage. I kept one hand firmly
on the throttle to ensure it stayed closed. I hit the starter button
with my hand ready to chop the mags if anything went awry. I'm sure you
will realise by now that the engine started in an instant. I stopped and
retried starting 4 times and it fired very easily every time. You won't
believe what a great feeling it was; I'm still on a high.
My problem now is to understand what this means. Any takers????
Cheers,
Phil Miller

One last try, Phil. You seem to have done good diagnostic work. Is the
key on the crankshaft loose, letting the timing wander on cranking? Is
it possible you have a leak from one plug wire (cylinder) to another,
causing the kickback? Can't think of anything else! Dave Austin 601HDS

Peter,
Yes, most of those questions have been answered. The power supply to the
starter is ok and this is confirmed by measuring voltage drop, current
draw, etc. Nothing gets hot. All 912 and 912S motors require a minimum
of 220rpm to generate a spark. My engine cranking speed is 285rpm with
mags off. I'd like to see a bit more. I may have to try to get hold of a
new starter motor to test. Unfortunately it seems you have to remove the
complete engine from the mount in order to remove the starter motor. One
tube of the engine mount passes close behind the starter preventing
removal (now there's a bit of smart design - NOT!!).
At this stage I don't know whether the problem is with the starter or
the prop.
Cheers,

List . . . I recently read a fiction book with a title something like Flight
of the Hornet (can't find the book to check the exact title). Anyway, the
action occurred in Europe just before WW II, and the two young people got a
plane from the Tiger Moth family up and running to escape. The author
mentioned that the plane has a Y yoke in the middle so this apparently isn't
something recent. Even though fiction, it must have some fact behind it as
that wouldn't be something an unknowledgeable writer would think up. So
what goes around, comes around.
My brother in law came up from Florida for a week to help me work on the
wing. What a wonderful feeling to see some substantial progress instead of
1 or 2 hours at a time. Hap Schoenberger 701 tail completed and right wing

The Anywhere map is very complete and good, a pilot here has one, the
only problem he finds is the glare, is very dificult (imposible will
be the correct word) for him to read it in the cockpit. Maybe is only
his PDA. He was very excited, because he has his checklist and several
goodies in the PDA.
He is planning to buy the new Garmin soon.

What kind of PDA does he have? I hear that the Ipaqs have good visibility in
sunlight, but not some of the other PDAs. I'm hoping that my tited canopy
will cut some of the sunlight from the cckpit.

My 16 gal. main tank and LE wing tanks had no ground tabs. I used 3 strips
of heavy duty aluminum food wrap, riveted to the airframe at one end, laid
on top of the cork lining at several spots for redundency with tank pressing
it in place. This still measures grounded after 7 yrs and 400 hrs.

Randy,
Thanks for the VW info. What ignition system? Dehil adapter?
The 701SP has wing tanks. Should gravity feed OK. Something I can test for.
I have been thinking about the 1915, but the 2180 spec.'s are good. How has
the Valley PSRU held up? Belt's?
How was the assembly of the 2180 ? Parts & fit OK?
Did you make your own engine mount?
Any flight experience with it?
Many thanks for the insight.
Jerry, CH 701SP Wing's in work.

I havent looked at it yet, maybe he will bring it over when he visits

I was thinking about the Anywhere map a few weeks ago, but I own a Palm
Tungsten and this model is not compatible with them (needs two memory
slots), so I lost interest for a while and will be using the Garmin 195

Check the page of Controlvision, they have certain minimums for the PDA
to work with the Map, 2 memory slots and some else... not all models
of PDA's or iPaqs will work.

Anyone out there know anything about Ross drives?I have one in my Zenith 200 mated
to a Subaru ej22.
Happy with till now but two weeks ago a friend in Ca called to tell me he had read
about several in-flight failures. He doesn't remember where he read it.My attempts
to find out more only revealed that Ross has gone out of business
HELP!!!!!!!!
