Has anyone developed a 601 XL POH and any standard checklists?
Specifically, for the 601 XL with Rotax 912S?

Frank- I bought a Pilot Handbook and Owners' Manual for experimental acft
from Spruce (p/n 13-13020) page 594 for $29.95. It's great. Three ring
binder with every page outlined you will ever need from Emerg proceedures,
performance, Wt and Bal, Maint log, Flight test log etc etc. All you need
to do is fill in the blanks. It has your emerg checklist already done, you
just have to put in your airspeeds and info pertaining to your aircraft. It
also has your normal proceedures check list all done. This is well worth
the bucks. Al Young N601AY (reserved).

Just wanted to keep you guys in the loop. I was supposed to go on Tuesday
for the teardown of my Stratus, but I got a call at the last minute saying
the NTSB had not released the engine. I just found out that they have
scheduled the teardown for next Wednesday morning. I'll let you all know
what they find afterward.

Hi Phil
I'm not sure where you got the minimum RPM for a starting spark but I recall
reading in the installation or maintenance manuals for the 912 that you need
700- 900 RPM. From experience the engine will not start if it does not turn
at that rate.
I don't have my manual with me but I'm pretty certain that 200- 300 RPM is
insufficient.
Hope this helps.

When hooking up the engine the Instalation manual suggests a 4 watt -12
volt light bulb be installed in the circuit. Today I have tried to find
one and haven't been able. It is supposed to light and indicate charging.
For 200 hours I just used a 50 ohm 10 watt resistor to protect the voltage
regulator. It needs a small load all the time. That works but I would
like to try the suggestion if I can find the bulb. Does any one know of a
source?
By the way someone asked about a source for the 23,000 micro Farad
capacitor rated at 25 volts in their circuit. I found that Radio Shack has
a 25,000 micro Farad rated at 50 volts. It is physically large, but it
works fine.

BTW: You can save money on the check list programs by creating small web
pages for the check lists and loading them on the PDA for viewing with a web
browser. WindowsCE devices have a version of Internet Explorer. This gives
much more options for customizing the check list and is dirt cheap.

Cleone,
This might be a better question for the aeroelectric list which is also
hosted at matronics.com.
But since the load is the important part you could always use a smaller
bulb or LED wired along with the existing resistor (I would try and give
you a circuit diagram, but since I'm not an expert I wouldn't want to
give you a wrong one).
When I asked a similar question on the aeroelectric list, Bob (the
list's expert) suggested that I replace the bulb with a resistor which
I'm sure is more reliable that a light bulb, since you won't have a load
if the bulb is burnt out. If you go the combo method, then you'll still
have the necessary load even during a bulb failure and an indicator
light.
Good Luck,
Don Honabach

Dick -
Made some time this evening and the sawzall/recip. worked great as did
the jigsaw. Both tools actually helped as I used a speed square and the
jigsaw to make my primary cut and the sawzall to trim off a 1" on the
strip. The jigsaw was easier to use for the long cut since it could ride
on the edge of the speed square. I also used blades meant to cut metal
with both tools which I'm sure helped.
Actually was surprisingly easier than I initially thought. Only
difference is that I'm not used to sparks when I cut and sand things.
Probably need some way of cooling the blade and/or material during the
cut, but the total amount of heat is far less than a fiction wheel cut.
Only downside is that I'm probably going to go through my jigsaw and
sawzall blades rather quickly, but I've only got a few pieces to cut so
it's not like I need to keep my per piece cost down :)
Thanks again for your help.
Don

Subject: | Stratus cooling data |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "John Karnes" <jpkarnes@charter.net>
I've been wrestling with some cooling problems with my Stratus EA-81 and I
seem to have worked them out. Here is what I discovered:
After reading all the info on moving radiators further back where there is
"undisturbed air," I moved my radiator back about three feet and ran hoses
along the bottom of the fuselage to connect to the firewall. That is when
all my problems began. Last summer, I started having all kinds of problems
and eventually resulted in a BAD overheating event and "unscheduled" landing
50 miles away. I tried putting a scoop on the front of the radiator before
this event and it still didn't work.
After a rebuild and some engine trial runs, it appeared that the engine was
running rich (a lot of carbon deposits on the plugs) so I leaned the main
jet on the Bing out one notch. When I took off, I had a lot of power but
the temps rose alarmingly on a brief climb out. Sooo....
I moved the radiator back to the edge of the firewall as per original
instructions, made the mixture rich a notch on the main jet, and wrapped the
exhaust with thermal wrap. When I took off this time, the water temp rose
to about 210 and stayed there. Man, what a relief! My advice to my fellow
"airsoobers":
Leave the radiator up front behind the prop (even though this makes no sense
to me), make the mixture rich enough (check by looking at the spark plugs),
and wrap exhaust with thermal wrap (as per Jim Weston's email). I'm looking
forward to a long summer of "frequent flier" miles!

Hi Thilo,
the product code is the same, 6061-T6 (this is international code), thickness 0.4mm.
In my opinion is better to use 0.5mm instead.
The second all. alloy you can use is 2024-T3, but it is a little bit hardly to
bent and is more expensive. I know there in Germany they have their specification
of all. alloy, but for sure they are using international type as well.
BR,
Alex Birca
