Amen to that, Scott. A flying buddy and I are starting to plan a trip to
Mecca (er, Oshkosh) next year. Not such a big deal for you guys but
quite a lot further (and much more expensive) from here in the South
Pacific.
Cheers,

Here I sit all sad and downtrodden
Wishing I was there, over in Wisconsin
Checking my email- nothing but SPAM
My buddies are at Oshkosh, how sad I AM!
No Emails to see, I surf over to Ebay
And what do I find, what a surprise I say!
Someone has given up a dream and lots of fun,
Selling a partial kit of a CH701!

For everyone unable to go to Oshkosh, have a good evening and lets plan
on
being there next year.

While the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine installed in the P-51 was superior to
the American designed Allison engine, it is probably incorrect to say the
design was "stolen". As I remember the Brits were getting the crap bombed
out of them, not the Americans, and the P-51 was a joint allied effort.
If the Spitfire was such a superior design they would have been using it
for escorting the American bombers, which took huge losses due to the ME's
and HE's, but that was what the P-51 was designed for (and was
successful). The American bombers were performing precision daylight bomb
raids while the Brits preferred bombing the countryside at night, if you
remember your history. Unfortunately, the "greatest fighter of WWII"
probably wasn't even Allied.

Yes your probably right on the last point, I am frequently amazed at the
technology the "other side" had available...the ME 109's were fuel injected,
they had the ME 262 at the end of the way and the first ICBM...the V2 out of
which the Saturn 5 space machine came out of.
I would conceed heartily that the Brits "gave" the Americans the Merlin
design most willingly. It just amuses me no end when icon's of American
innovation turn out to be a good part British. Hey I'm a Brit working in
Oregon, what do you expect?
Last year I even had a guy at my desk telling me what an awesome piece of
American innovation the Harrier jump jet is...Whats more he was serious...:)
