I am about to mount my 70" 3 blade warp drive prop to a 912-S on my 701. Does
anyone on the list have a good starting point to set the pitch angle? ( I think
I'm getting real close to experiencing mans second greatest thrill :-) )

Larry,
thanks for the info, I think an off-center to the opposite side of
the transponder may be the spot,
thanks again!

It shouldn't matter if you're off center down there though, but I'd

Final question on the Comant Antenna installation location. Thanks to
all for great responses. Since I don't feel like having to buy a new
Antenna, are there any issues with top-mounting the Comant CI 122
which is designed to be bottom mounted? I have a perfect spot that
meets all distance requirements etc.. but its on top, not the bottom.
Thanks again

Based on our experience with a 701 on amphibs using the 912A (early version
of the ULS), 80HP provides very marginal climb rates at gross weight,
especially when the OAT is above 75F. In this case, marginal means 100-200
FPM. Getting off the water is not a problem with 80HP, it is just the climb
performance. Single pilot, we get 200-400 FPM under the same temperature
conditions. We are planning to up-engine to the 912S this winter for better
perfomance on summer exploring trips next year.
I'm planning to post a picture library of our 701's trip to Oshkosh this
year. I'll post the URL once I have everything in place.

I highly recommend the 912ULS for float operation. Let me know if you
need an engine with the normal starter. It works fine and you will not
need any mount modification.

Can anyone advize me if the 80 hp 912 is sufficient for amphibious
floats or should I get the 912s which means changing my engine mount due
to the new heavy duty starter. Thanks

My Dad and I are considering building a 701 and enjoyed looking over the examples
at Oshkosh! We were hoping to find someone nearby who would be willing to
give us a demo flight. We're in northern West Virginia, near Morgantown (MGW),
about 90 miles south of Pittsburgh. I rent a 172 out of Waynesburg, PA, (WAY),
and could fly within a couple hunred miles or so..... would just like to
experience how the plane flies before commiting to the kit, and Mexico is 4.5+
hours by 172. Thanks! mike@theautoexpo.com

I have a similar prop on a CAM100 (100 hp) engine on a 601 HDS, so this info
may be of only general use to you.
I started with about 13 degress (using the supplied protractor installed at
the tip) -- while it gave excellent acceleration and allowed for max. rpm at
higher altitude, it also gave a slower top/cruise speed.
Went to 18 degrees for a while. The acceleration was still excellent and
cruise speeds picked up 10 mph or so, but there seemed to be some 'lugging'
vibrations in the airframe (like a manual gear car in too high a gear)...
I later backed off to 16 and this has been a nice compromise for now.
Good luck,

I have found the post on nutplates very interesting: I
have never greased screws going into nutplates nor
have I ever heard of it. HOWEVER the anti corrossion
thing sounds very good, if we are only pulling some
panels once a year------ I believe I will try using
"anti seize" installed in the nutplate itself ( on
the threads of the bolt, I'm not convinced any gets to
the bottom threads) I take the side that the screw
will still not back out-----( they use "anti-seize" on
wheel lug nuts on "skidders" and they don't loosen up)
I also use only: "floating nutplates", I feel the
rigid kind create half the problems with them
breaking. As for the panels---- Chris says to use
.025, I use .032---- the reason being, I install the
nutplates on the panels themselves------ this gives me
a stronger surface to rivet the nutplate to, also: if
there is a problem: once the screw head is ground
off--- I can bring the panel home to repair it much
easier than if the nutplate was installed onto the
airframe. I also don't use "phillip head
screws" in nutplates--- I feel you have to push to
hard to keep the screwdriver in the screwhead--- I
use tiny bolts which I can put a wrench ( or
socket)onto--- that way, the only pressure is from the
turning motion---------------- just one "hayseeds"

I've posted pictures of my dad and I's CH-701 at the Oshkosh seaplane base
this year. They are located at http://www.edwintech.com/ch-701.htm . This
was the first time either of us had flown into the seaplane base so it was
an exciting experience.

Mike and others considering the same thing:
It would be worth every penny to make it to Mexico, MO. I live in Omaha, NE
- six hours by car and I made the trip for the rudder workshop. I would
also recommend the rudder workshop if you are a first time builder (like
me). Get a hotel and stay a day or two. You will be glad you did. I
shudder to think if I had started my project without the valuable two days I
spent at the workshop. A chance to go there and visit with other builders
prior to starting your project would be priceless also.
That's my advice having been there, done that.
Good luck,
Scott Laughlin
