Hello,
Tonigh we worked in the engine and isntrument wiring, couldn find in
the plans or instruction book the recomended position of the batery,
Do any of you, 701 builders, can tell us where you put the batery?
I know it depends in the W&B, but an aproximate prosition will be great
to know.

Gary,
Mine is behind the passenger seat just forward of the bottom fuse
inspection hatch. W&B is fine with it there.

Gary,
Make a preliminary weight and balance to see where you cg will be. Then
you can pick the best place for the battery. I have a Jabiru 2200 on my 701
and put the two 6 volt batteries (in series to get 12 volts) on the top
firewall shelf. Many with the heavier Rotax 912 have to put the battery
behind the seat to get a good cg. I used two 6 volts, as a single 12 volt
was too high and would have been too close to the cowl. Look at my web site
under Airplane/Jabiru Installation for some photos.

Greetings... I would like to modify my firewall with the new, wider

dimensions of the channel(s), as well as the position of the bungee
pin? Has the upper channel changed? Thanks.

Hello gang,
Well, some of you may have noticed the tremendous
progress I made on my project since the beginning of
the year. Well, thanks to a company reorganization, I
got a lot more time for the plane building project.
Back in December, I thought I needed only a couple of
months to finish the project....
I spent an inordinate amount of time setting up my
soob installation and making the cowling. As a
result, I'm pretty close to finishing the project only
since a couple of weeks. One of the lessons leaned on
this project is "unless you're a builder not in a
hurry that really wants to do everything by yourself,
make sure you use the designer's proposed engine or
something else that is available with a FWF kit".
Redrive problems, intake manifold problems, ignition,
exhaust and cowling all took too much elapsed time.
My revised goal was to finish the project and get the
plane in the air before August 22, the date at which I
switch from being an aircraft builder to be a student
(I'm going back to school to complete a 1-year
intensive MBA program... something I wanted to do for
quite a while).
I realized this week that while it's possible to be
ready for final inspection by next week, I'm not
enjoying the time I have left much and I don't take
much time to play with my kids (also a unique
opportunity in life to take some time with them at a
period where I'm normally working). I had a
discussion with my older son Thursday and decided to
put the project aside for a while. I just want to
finalize my preliminary W&B to determine where the
battery goes and then, I'm gonna put the plane back in
the garage.
What I have left to do on the plane:
. Install a cover strip underneath the wing (junction
of outboard wing with center wing).. I prefer this
compared with the little tabs shown in the plans.
. Install the battery and then, rivet the rear top
skin.
. Adjust elevator and rudder cables (this has been
done, stops are all there).
. Safety wire the control cables.
. Possibly make an aileron stop (seems I have too much
movement now... need to be validated)
. Install weather strip to rear end of canopy
. Get certificate of registration (final inspection
already ordered and paid... but I have to delay it
most likely to fall 2004). I don't need C of R until
then.
Starting on Aug 22, I may become much less active on
this list, but I'll still read some messages. I want
to thank all of you who participate here and helped
me... I may surprise myself and find that I can still
finish the plane while pursuing the studies, but I
don't count on that.
Since I really like the current picture of the day on
my web site... I may leave it there for quite a while.
Sorry for the long post... but this makes me feel
better.
Good night!

JD,
As per 4th edition plans 03/2002:
7F7 2C Vertical lower channel 86 by 45 by 392 (.040")
Bungee pin 235 from top (5/8" hole)
Upper channel (.063) 95 X 20 7F7 1SP

I was just wondering which location of the COM antenna provides the best quality
and range of transmissions, top or bottom of the fuselage. I have a MicroAir
760 transceiver, and an inexpensive stainless steel 45-degree whip antenna. I
figure that the bottom location is optimal since there would be no interference
between the antenna and the ground station.
Thanks for the comments.

Your website and your work has been an inspiration to me. I'm replying to
the list because I hope there are others who feel the same way I do. I
found your website when I was only dreaming of building an airplane. Now
that I've started, you have been a great help to me with your excellent web
site. I will continue to look at your photos because they help me in my
building process. Good luck with your education, but I hope you find time
to tinker with your airplane to continue toward your goal since you are so
close to finishing.
Good luck,

Thanks, Jon, for the speedy reply. Got a date with a brake tomorrow
morning, and was really hoping I'd get these dimensions in time. The
List comes through again!
> Are you rebuilding that ship, I take it??!!
You betcha. Wasn't all that much damage once I got it home and
started looking closely. On the plus side, I now have the opportunity
to make some improvements, including these firewall mods, new
bungee, the formed windscreen, improved cowling fit/attach, and yes,
probably paint, since its apart anyway. Think I'll nickel plate the
nose gear strut and jet-hot the exhaust system, two areas that get
kind of crappy looking. Shoots hell out of this flying season,
however ;') Just wish I knew exactly what caused the prop to stop
turning. Engine started right up several weeks later when I hooked
up a jerry can as a fuel tank (after first checking fuel pump
impulse line - fine, plugs - all 4 tan and perfect, compression -
118 both cylinders, etc. Haven't pulled heads or cylinders yet, but
did remove exhaust manifold to look a pistons & cyl. walls, seem
perfect. All indicators point to fuel, but how or why is a still
mystery (tank caps vented + ram-air vented, before you ask ;').
Thinking I might implement a small header tank in the baggage area,
and possibly a facet pump to fill one wing tank from the other,
eliminate left/right valve.

Michel,
I will add a little note, Looking at your photo of the day, the only
problem I see in storing your great airplane for some time is the
canopy... is already without the protective cover, the dust and
little scratches by something (even a cat) can ruin it. Some advise to
Michel how to pretect it?

JD,
From your post, I have a couple of thoughts (ideas), might worth
nothing, but they are free :-) hope they help.
If you think that a momentary lack of fuel (unknow yet), was what
caused your engine to stop, a header tank can help, and the best
header tank design for a two tanks high wing airplane I have seen is
the one used in the Kitfox 6 (two built localy), is installed behind
the seats, conects the 2 tanks, is vented up to tanks level, is about a
gallon size (maybe a little less), has a fuel level switch/float, in
case of runing out of gas from the wings, a light goes on in the
dashboard, so you have time (depending of gph) to look for a landing
spot, I dont know how much time a galon of fuel will give you.
Hope you have a chance to give it a look, maybe they sell the header
tank kit as spare parts.
Saludos
Gary Gower

Hello List
There was a 601HDS project in daytona that was purchased
about a year ago. No engine, just the FWF rearward. The only
thing done to the kit was the rudder and part of the Fuse.
Is this builder on the list ??
I could look at my notes for a serial number and prev owner
name......I guess I could even call ZAC but I think there should
not be that many projects sold in daytona last year :)
Just wondering
