I'll be operating from a dirt runway here at the ranch, so there will be stones thrown up by the wheels during takeoff and landing. I was going to place the antenna off center to avoid potential damage. Maybe the top position is better on dirt runways. The transponder antenna would be on the bottom for optimum performance. I did my MBA at McGill University at night while working at Canadair in the Challenger marketing department. I worked and studied 18 hours a day, and there's no way I could have done anything else during that time. I even stopped working, and completed the MBA full time, and still would never have been able to build an aircraft while at school. All the best with your education. Found a couple mistakes in the 4th edition plans today, maybee I can save someone from making scrap metal. The two "Z" on each side of the access hole, that run parallel to the aircraft center line, are given on page 7F2, as being 660 m.m. long. I had to add 20 m.m. to that. Maybee I made a mistake elsewhere but I do'nt see it(yet). No big deal, just made a couple more. Also after making a nice baggage compartment back,7F5-8, tried to install it. Nope ai'nt 'gonna fit! This is the standard, non-extended back! All thru the plans they label the "extended" back as 7F5-8. Watch out for this one. Ohh well, guess I'll make the standard baggage compartment. Finally I learned that a static RPM test can be used to set the pitch. For the 912S static RPM should be between 5300 and 5500. (5300 for a climb prop and 5500 for cruise). Applefeld" Hi list, I've mainly been a lirker since I haven't had much to contribute to what the more knowledgable add to this list. Last month I had my airworthiness sign-off. I have been doing some taxi tests to get a feel for the plane. The weather on the east coast has been horrendous the last two weeks so even taxi tests were not a good idea. This afternoon the weather improved alot-not perfect just alot. Went back to the airport, took the plane out to do more testing. Got to the point where I could lift the nose wheel. Systems seem to check out so on the next pass I gave just a little more power. As I lifted the nose, I realized I left the ground entirely. Leveled the nose, cut power and let her settle back down. Systems still seemed to be fine, handling good. The next pass I intentionally gave enough to get her up to about 5 feet. Tried the ailerons and drifted back and forth some to get the feel. Stayed up for maybe 300-400 feet then cut power and settled back down. I know, I know-only ground effect but you could say that I had my first flight today. If the weather ever really improves I hope to do the first REAL flight in the next two weeks. I have been working (off and on) on N601GV for 9 years. She is a 601HD nose-wheel, that is 90% built from plans. I'm using a EA-81 SOOB that I built up myself with help from Joe Souza in California. Using his reduction, intake and carb. I have not painted and may leave her bare for the time being. Have not been able to get insurance due to the SOOB. EAA, AOPA and Sky Smith underwriters all demand 2-10 hours of dual IN TYPE. Not possible! So will probably fly the first 5-10 uninsured. Do alot of praying nothing goes wrong and then reapply. Thanks to everyone that I've read and learned from all these years. You might see if the insurance company will let you consider training time in the Alarus CH2000 as equivalent. The Alarus flies very simular to the CH601. The biggest difference is the yoke and flaps that aren't present in the CH601. The CH601 is more sporty, but the Alarus isn't bad for a factory plane. I have three Alari in my flight schools, including a new one I bought personally two weeks ago. We did the FAA inspection yesterday. I had a few minor things to fix during the inspection, and finally around 4 PM I had the treasured Airworthiness Certificate. This morning we had scattered clouds and a light 90 degree crosswind, and an occasional spot of sprinkles. Normally a light crosswind wouldn't bother me much, but since I was unfamiliar with the flight characteristics of my plane and the low clouds, I decided to wait. I ended up waiting until around noon for the wind to die out and the clouds to burn off. First I did a few taxi tests. I pulled the nose off the ground a couple of times in the process (I had been doing slow taxi tests for several weeks now). Then I taxied back to the hangar to discuss with my ground crew if I should go for it. The answer was a unanimous, "Let's do it." Back at the end of the runway, after doing my runup and reviewing my checklist, I sat there for a few seconds wondering if I had forgot anything. Finally, I slowly pushed in the throttle and let it roll. At about 45 mph, I gave the stick a little back pressure, and up she went. I remember thinking to myself very loudly "OH CRAP, I'M OFF THE GROUND!" (OK, maybe the word wasn't crap). It climbed OK up to pattern altitude around 500 ft/min. I wasn't going to try to push it. On a day like today in Texas, a Cessna 152 would have probably not even done that good. But after that, the climb performance was almost non existent. I finally managed to get about 2000 ft AGL. My ground crew called me and asked if I could hear the engine missing. Indeed I could, and along with that my oil temps were almost at red line. I decided I wasn't going to do any near stalls today and came back to land. The landing was a pretty landing, on tape anyway. You can't see the pucker factor that was going on in the cockpit. As I crossed over the numbers and began to flare, I found that I couldn't see over the cowl anymore. I didn't know if I was going to run off into the grass or what. As soon as the mains touched I let the nose down. Whew! Nothing but runway in front of me. As I taxied in, you could hear the miss getting worse. I had a lot of mixed emotions as I climbed out of the cockpit. I was very happy that my plane flies, but very disappointed in the engine. We discussed the flight and after everyone left, I looked over the plane. I decided to pull the plugs and found one side looked normal, and the other was sooty. I thought I had this worked out, as I had been fighting a similar problem for several months. Later, I found on the net that, others running the same carb, intake setup on VW's have had this problem. Apparently the answer is to install a "swirl plate behind the carb because the fuel tends to hang on one side of the manifold. I made and installed the swirl plate this evening. I can see a definite difference in the way the engine runs now. I gained 100 rpm and it seems to run more smoothly now. If the weather's good in the morning, maybe I find out if it works tomorrow.
