      Gary,

Yes, my plane is painted. Sorry, I can't tell you how much the paint
      weighs.

      Hello Phil,

Thanks for taking your time to answer, just one more question: Is your
plane painted? Our is zinc cromate inside and out (complete but thin
coat) also is painted outside with Dupont Chrome One. I dont know how
much this painting will increase the weight.

      Lowell,

Sorry I have taken a while to reply. I have the same
airframe/engine/prop combination so hope I can help. My pitch was set at
14 degrees when I bought the plane. I suspect it is a little too coarse
as it will only rev to 5300rpm in climb and cruises 70kt at only
4760rpm. Have had major problems with cold-starting so haven't had the
      opportunity to experiment yet.

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Phil Miller

I am about to mount my 70" 3 blade warp drive prop to a 912-S on my 701.
Does anyone on the list have a good starting point to set the pitch
angle? ( I think I'm getting real close to experiencing mans second
      greatest thrill :-) )

I am using the same radio and same antenna.
I placed the antenna on top of fusalage ,centered between rear of canopy and
elt antenna which is just ahead of the rudder.
      It works fine

It's just a couple of pieces of aluminum configured in an X shape and bent
at the ends. You place it inside the intake manifold behind the carb to make
      the fuel/air mixture spin.

It's the Great Plains VW 2180. It has a 1.6:1 PRSU on it and is supposed to
be rated at 103 hp for 5 minutes, then you have to back off to 3600 RPM,
which is supposed to put you around 80 HP.

      Randy,
This swirl plate may help with Stratus intake and uneven distribution. Can you
get a picture or give more details? How far do the pieces extent into the manifold.
How much bend did you put into the ends. How are they held in place?

A courteous reminder: "Thank you's" are to be sent off-list. And when not accompanied
by "do not archive" these types of posts make our list less valuable
      and redundant.

Some of the guidelines must not be readable by some folks. PLEASE follow them:

                           Zenith-List Usage Guidelines
      ******************************************************************************

The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Zenith-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Zenith-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.

      Zenith-List Policy Statement

The purpose of the Zenith-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:

       - Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.

       - THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.

       - Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
         responses.

       - Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
         space in the archive.

       - DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
         web page or FAQ first.

       - If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.

       - When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
         can not be overstated!

       - When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.

       - DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.

       - When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
         contribute something valuable.

       - Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.

I flew it again this morning. The engine seemed to run better this time. I
didn't have time to pull the plugs and see how they look, but will probably
do so tomorrow. I'll try to get some pictures of the swirl plate too. I'm
sure that when you see the pics, you'll get the idea of how it works. I have
to warn you that I'm not real fast with pictures.

Can you get a picture or give more details? How far do the pieces extent
into the manifold. How much bend did you put into the ends. How are they
held in place? Don Walker HDS

      Hi folks,

a few days ago I got myself a German airplane magazin. It featured an interesting
article about a new automotive engine conversion: some of you might heard about
the Smart car. The Smart car is a totally new car concept developed by Daimler-Chrysler
afew years ago. It is a small two seater car with a body made completely
from thermoplastic resin. I'm sure, the never will sell that car in
the US due to it small size except maybe as a new lawn mower design, but it is
now very popular in Europe, especially for the crowded cities.

Anyway, Daimler-Chrysler also developed a new engine concept for that new car.
The engine is basically a 3 cylinder (600 ccm), 4 stroke engine complete with
turbo charger, catalysator, double ignition, fuel ignition, fuel flow and ingnition
timing control for each cylinder separatly, etc. So, a few guys got together
and modified the engine for airplane use - amongst them the chief engineer,
who developed the engine for Daimler-Chrysler. The engine comes in two versions
with 55 HP or 70 HP, a 82 HP version is planned. Weight is very similar
like a 912, performance of the 70 HP engine is comparable with the 912 due to
higher torques in the lower RPM range. The engine is reported to be very quit
even during take-off - measurements showed the take-off less to be noisier than
a landing Cessna 172. Fuel consumption of the 70 HP engine is 20 % lower than
the 912. Also, the price is lower than the 912. Obviously, a Zodiac 601 UL is
now equipped with such an engine - I will try to find out more.

      Happy building / flying

      Thilo Kind

To the list.....Has anyone had any experience with the Kuntzleman Magnum dual strobe
system? Is this a reliable system? I see that the Smart Strobe can be powered
either from a 12V source, or the AC coil on the Rotax 912. Which source
of power would be better (12V or AC coil)? My plan is to put one light on the
bottom, and one on the top of the fuselage.

      Thanks for the comments.....Dave

Jeff I suspect that you are the list administrator and respect the
position of policing the free speech of others. But I would request a
more relaxed hand in preaching to the list . I agree that the main part
of the list is to discuss and help others build Zenith designed planes
but a sense of camaraderie is had in the messages that are off topic,
especially those that are of a congratulatory nature. Anyone on this
list that has spent 3-10 years building a plane deserves his/her name in
the archives with a healthy contingent of congratulations. I have
searched the archives with this in mind to see how many list members
have left the nest. Also I have researched the archives for messages on
CNC and found Larry's name in there and was able to ask him a question
directly. Also who would not want the message from Brent Battles on his
      601 adventures in the archives.
This list is more then builders information to a few of us, it is also a
way of having a group discussion with friends, of which I consider every
builder on this list to be.
I agree that a friendly private reminder to an individual whom has
gotten carried away and has traveled way off to the radical right is a
good thing. But to the list in general I believe that the matronics
monthly list etiquette mailing should suffice as a reminder.
I personally want to develop friendships on this list as well as to know
what grade of bolt ZAC uses for the 601XL main gear attachment (Grade 8
      by the way).

Also may I suggest adding OT (OFF TOPIC) to the subject line of those
letters that do not apply directly to building. This way those whom wish
not to socialize may just hit the DEL key. Just a suggestion.

      ......"radical right"....... ??

What, pray tell, is a "radical right" airplane builder?
What happens when a "radical left" rears its ugly head?
Does he, or she, or it, get equal billing?

But maybe I just mis-read the post. Maybe it said "radial right" in which
case I knew immediately that it was NOT one of those Polish-built R-985's
hanging on an old Ag Cat. That would be a radial left.

Anyway, I am greatly relieved to know we've not got a new pissing contest
started concerning improper mis-use of the list.

| Subject: | Matco Brake Geometry |

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jeff & Marcia Davidson" <jdavidso@fcc.net>

While at Oshkosh, I visited the Matco tent display to ask about the brake
geometry problem. There is discussion in the archives if this is a new
topic to you. What I think is new is that Matco had a mock-up at Oshkosh of
the Zenith rudder pedals as shown in the drawings and as modified to give a
better mechanical advantage. The mock up included pressure gauges to
demonstrate the pressure difference in the different configurations. It
also had an option to introduce air into the system and see the results.
Matco has some drawings of the modifications available on their web site.
At www.matcomfg.com there is a paper available titled "Maximizing The Output
of Your Brakes" that explains the desired situation. Go to the
TROUBLESHOOTING link then scroll down to the Brake section and click on the
hyperlink to the document on Maximizing Your Brake Torque that has the
information about pedal geometry. Separately George Happ of Matco also sent
me the dimensional drawings for the exact pedal system used on the simulator
at Oshkosh. I'll be happy to forward these if you would like. For those of
us just getting to the pedals, Matco has really done a fine job of
explaining both the problem and the modifications to fix it.
Thanks to all those builders that explored this problem and worked it out
with Matco so that this type of modification was available.
