Subject: | Re: XL Axle to landing gear? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: xl <xl@prosody.org>
Hello,
Here's what I did (just last weekend).
The axle is flush with the bottom of the landing gear.
This gives at least 10mm between the center of the bolt holes
and the edge of the gear and maximum ground clearance. I filed
off the corner of the landing gear to center the axle (with the
caliper on it) - again this provides at least 10mm of metal.
There are two (not close up) pictures on the ZAC web site.
(follow the finishing link - I think.)
To drill the holes I clamped the axle in place and slid the
1/4" OD 3/8"ID bushing that is used for the control stick
into an axle hole. I then used an 8" 3/8" drill bit to drill
a 3/8" hole straight through the gear. The bushing keeps the axle
safe from the bit and helps align it properly. The 8" drill bit
helped me to keep the hole parallel to the axle hole and gave me the
clearance that I needed to drill. I then removed the axle
and drilled the hole out to 1/4" (with a fresh bit) letting the
drill bit slowly follow the pilot hole. Put a 1/4" bolt in the drilled
hole - add extra washers to tighten it down to save the nut. Repeated for
the other three holes. All of my 8 holes are aligned and the bolts slide
easily in and out. The calipers can be removed with the axle bolted on.
I am satisfied with the job.

Hi Duane,
Thanks a lot for the advise. I had heard that the tailwheel was too large
to let the plane's nose high enough to taliwheel land without hitting the
tailwheel first. Obviously this is not a problem for you. Glad to hear it.
I haven't read a thing about locking the tailwheel. How do you do it? Are
there any pix or descriptions on doing it? I have heard that the rudder is
awesome tho. One friend that used to fly a HDS said he had made safe
landings in 25 kt crosswinds and had rudder left over.
Again, thanks for the information.

Hi Mike,
It is possible to make a single rotor engine out of a twin rotor 13b. The resulting
engine make about 100hp (or up to 300 if you really turbo boost/mod it),
and weighs about 150lbs. I've been following the list on the ACRE site for awhile
now, and one of the members has one working.
The ACRE website is: http://home.earthlink.net/~rotaryeng/ and is run by Paul Lamar. Lot of good heads on the list, including a number of design engineers. Been thinking pretty hard about using a 13BT for the BD-4 I'm going to do next.
Good luck..

Listers,
Thought I would post this tip for anyone who has or is in the process of doing
an o-200 for their Zodie. After fighting oil temp issues for about a year, I
finally bit the bullet and installed an oil cooler, which knocked the temps down
by 40F. On a 96F day, I'm now getting a max oil temp of 218F, where before
at 87F I was getting 240F oil temp.
The o-200 only has one access point for an oil cooler, and the same point is also
used for oil filter adapters. I had the filter already, which made it a tough
decision, as I didn't want to remove it. However, I found an alternative.
An auto sandwich adapter intended for Fords, has the same o-ring diameter and thread
size as the Champion CH48108 filter used by the spin-on adapter. The sandwich
adapter fits between the filter and the filter mount, extending the center
threaded stud. The cooler oil lines tap into it through 3/8"FPT ports, and
it includes a pressure bypass mechanism to bypass the cooler if it's plugged.
Cost about $50 at summitracing.com.
The cooler I used was a Positech experimental, smallest I could get, and the lines
are custom made hydraulic hoses (local auto parts shop), 3/8" inside diam.,
at about $14 ea. Total invested, about $240.
Anyway, just thought I would pass this on.

Ron,
The rudder is awesome and you will find the plane very solid in ground handling
and compares favorably with any taildragger. I started over three hundred
hours ago by taxi testing slow, then to the speed of lifting the tail with full
down elevator, and then increased from there. The wisdom of high speed taxi
has been debated here, but I taxied mine up to 70 before getting airborne. Then
I knew I could handle a landing. The plane is VERY solid in handling. If you
have 100 or more H.P. you might want to apply power gently to avoid pulling to
the side on take off roll. I apply mine gently up to about thirty and then let
her have it. You should find the rudder very effective in cross wind landings.
I wheel land 99% of the time, finding that simple, smooth and easier in the
HDS. Take your time. I bet you will be pleased. Don Walker

Before I had flown my plane there were several inquires about what to expect
for performance especially from 701 builders. I thought I would post some
results now that I have flown it a couple of times.
I have a 2180 VW with a 1.6:1 PRSU and a 67" Powerfin ground adjustable
prop. On the first and second flights, I was only able to get 75 mph at full
throttle. Climb at takeoff seemed good for the first 100 feet, then dropped
off to almost nothing. The engine was misfiring a bit on the first flight. I
added the swirl plate in the manifold and flew it again the next day. The
second flight resulted in very similar performance, without the misfiring.
I think I have found the reason for the poor performance. Part of it was me
and part of it was the prop. For a couple of days, I made few phone calls to
Zenith, and Great Plains. It wasn't until I found a website that explained
propeller physics that it finally hit me in the head as to what was
happening. Basically, I had reached the max forward speed for that
prop/pitch combination. When I did my first 2 flights, it climbed good for
the first 100 ft or so, then it would barely climb at all. I finally
realized that the reason for this was that I was trying to stay above 70mph.
I didn't know what the stall speed was and didn't want to go any slower.
Yesterday I added 1/2 degree of pitch to the prop and tried it again. This
time, I allowed it to climb at 60 mph. I climbed all the way to 4200 ft @
500-600 ft/min. Max level speed turned out to be 85 mph at about 3400 rpm
(recommend cruise rpm). At that speed, I was able to trim and let go of the
controls and still fly straight and level. I can't help but wonder what kind
of climb I would have got at 55 or even 50 mph. I also wonder if a different
prop will yield a better cruise speed. Maybe a 2 blade with more pitch. This
kind of performance may be appealing to a 701 builder. Unfortunately, the
front oil seal started leaking, so I'll have to deal with that before I do
any more testing.

Wayne - Just think: Most of the Ercoupes were made in 1946. That is about
57 years ago. I'm now 53. 53 and 57 is 110. If I live that long, I
probably will not be flying and the plane will have been parted out by then.
There are also some other production planes out there without corrosion
protection. For me, I still see a lot of Ercoupes around. They are a
desirable plane for many of the same reasons the 601 is. the truth is that
we hear both horror stories and tales of it not mattering so you take your
pick.

Don't know about you, but I fully expect my planes (a '49 Bonanza and a
701 yet to be started) to out last me and I'm 10 years younger than you.
I plan to will the planes to my children and have them enjoy flying the
planes as much as I have (will).
I've fought a lot of corrosion issues on my Bonanza. Issues that wouldn't
have exist if Beechcraft had given thought that their planes just might
still be flying in 50 years.

I have had experience with ercoupe corrosion and the primer issue would not
have helped with the spar corrosion which is killing the coupes this year. That
corrosion is from the inside out. The metal will look like pie crust. It
seems that they tried a different alloy for the spar in 46 and it is comming back
to haunt us now. Spending $10,000 to fix a bonanza may be justified. $10,000
for a $15000 coupe may not. I still like the primer idea. Jack Russell Clovis

Jack and others:
With the experience we gain while building our Zodiacs and 701's, how hard
would it be to re-build some ercoupe wings with better material? Are the
plans available? Can you find an Ercoupe in bad shape for a "real deal?"
Sorry if these are dumb questions, but Jack's post got me thinking about
this.

Let me add my two cents to this discussion by reminding the list that Ercoupes
were skinned with 2024-T3 Alclad, not bare 6061-T6. The two alloys are not directly
comparable so far as corrosion resistance goes. That said, I did find corroded
areas on the interior of my first Ercoupe, especially in areas where the
moisture was trapped by grease and dirt. As I understand the spar corrosion
issue, it relates to the forged end fittings. Proper corrosion protection there
might have prevented the problem, but who then expected that the airplanes would
still be flying 57 years later.
My 601 project has been under construction for longer that I like to admit. Recently
I've noticed evidence of surface corrosion on the skins of my tailplanes
which have been stored in a dry attic for a few years. I'm glad that I decided
to prime all the interior surfaces. I was able to polish the corrosion off the
surface, by the way.

Scott: The parts are available for a small fortune from Univar. As far as
building parts yourself it would be diffcult since we are dealing with a
certified plane. As far as a "real deal" -buying a coupe as always been a real
deal.
Keeping one is another story unless you happen to be an A&P. One of our
ercoupe members has the orginal plans for the coupe and he says he is going to
build
one from scratch. Good luck

This builder would love to see more info. Can you contact me off list so we
can discuss. I am stalled in my project right now because I am very unhappy
with my electrical and the throttle linkage (safety concerns) and the overall
issues of the Stratus we have all seen recently. I was close to throwing in
the towel and was getting pretty depressed, but dog gone it! I'm to close to
being done to stop.

Jeff,
What will happen if one of your grandsons will like to keep his Grampas
plane flying and is grounded for corrosion? Well maybe then there
will be a law to prevent airplanes from flying...

I was talking to the people from Warp Drive up at Oshkosh. They claim
that in a 601HD I can gain 5 to 10 mph by using the "Constant Speed
Blade Platform". Does anyone have any real world experience to
substantiate this. It is a $45/blade upgrade.

Steve,
Someone mentioned about a good shop that rebuilt his engine's valve
guides, maybe there is a way out. There are a lot of Subies flying in
diferent airplanes, I dont thing there are so many failures. I suppose
youre in the Soob list... Sorry I am not.
I am lurking for about a year in the GEO list, and I will probably
build a 1,300 cc turbo conversion.
I posted this because I want to encourage all (including myself) to
continue in our projects, same happend to me in my first project and
friends help me out with advise & ecouragement.
This one is my 5th plane I built, I love to buid planes.
Dont give up.

I have seen quite a few wood ultralights that are 20 years old, I bet the
builder did not think he was building a plane that would still be flying 20
years later. You may not keep your plane for 57 years but neither did the
person who bought the new Ercoupe. If you are going to donate your plane to
a childrens museum or send it to the scrap yard when you are tired if it
then fine. If not someone will have to deal with corosion someday it just
may not be you.

I have added a Cool Collar on my Champ (c-85) and it has helped to
keep the oil temp down. They are about $35 or so and attach to the
oil filter. You can run some ducted air to them to help them cool better.
They are a poor mans oil cooler. My iA told me about them, they
are not legal for the champ but it comes off in about 30 seconds.

HI ron
The matco tailwheel that come with the 601 kit locks that is steerable with
rudder as it comes from matco you have deflect the rudder about 30 degrees
to unlock it which makes hard to do a short turn. But you can order from
order from matco a 20 degree arms they make a lot to do short turn Duane

I get my knowlege about Ercoupes from Francis DeFord who owns the airstrip
where I keep my ultralight. Francis owns 4 airworthy and flying Coupes and 3
more that will be flying in the next few years. The other 3 Ercoupes Francis
owns are only good for small parts and making really neat tetrahedons ( wind
direction indicators) The spar cap that corodes is a complex extrusion and
the big rivits that hold the steel forging that helps corosion of the
aluminum can be fixed but is time and skill intensive. A nice Ercoupe is not
worth the time and money it takes to turn a junk coupe into a nice one.

I still need some help please.=0D
=0D
It seems that I still have a little problem with my CH-300 that I just can
not seem to find a fix for.=0D
My CH-300 ailerons vibrate at about 130 mph IAS. If I do not slow down when
this happens then=0D
as you may have guessed the vibration turns into wing and aileron flutter=2E
VERY BAD THING TO HAVE HAPPEN!=0D
=0D
Last year I was able to fly my CH-300 up to 170 mph smoothly with no problem
However over the last winter I=0D
had rebuilt just about every thing on the aircraft and found that the
control cables were rubbing and cutting=0D
through the wing ribs. I moved the pullys forward to correct the problem=2E
I then set the cable tension to 30 lbs which is=0D
what the plans say the tension should be. I can not find a solution to the
aileron vibration and it is really begining to bother me=0D
since I can not fly over 125 mph until I find a fix.=0D
=0D
I have thought about installing aileron spades to help balance the ailerons.
Does anyone have any input on this or any=0D
other possible fix? I don't know where I can purchase aileron spades and am
not sure where to being to construct my own.=0D
I don't want to kill myself while trying to correct this problem.=0D
=0D
Please email me at jeffpaden@madbbs.com with any advise you may have.=0D
=0D
You can see my aircraft at http://www.madbbs.com/~jpaden/CH-300/ if it will
help at all.=0D

Thank you all=0D

Moving the pulleys might have changed the geometry such that the cables do
not remain taught. I'd recommend making a drawing showing the dimensions of
the modified control system and send it to ZAC for evaluation unless you
know either an aeronautical or mechanical engineer who can evaluate the
geometry to determine if moving the pulleys might be the issue...
