Hi Duane,
Shows you what I know.. I didn't know about it's locking feature. I have a
large Matco on my Cub J3 UL clone and it's always moved with the rudder thru
the pull of the springs. I will look into the 20degree arms. I hear that
Matco folks are good in supporting their products. I need to look into
increasing my brake efficiency as I understand they aren't too good at
holding the plane at any speed or rpm.

Way to go, Steve! After getting my first 30 hours flown off, I've been
battling to find and correct the cause of some engine 'falterings'...
sometimes I've felt the same way (how much is this thing worth as scrap
metal? etc...)...
Anyways... I've finally found the exact cause of the problems and it's being
regulated by the engine manufacturer supplying new Hall Effect sensors.
Meanwhile I've got the aircraft in the shop, redoing/upgrading certain parts
(canopy opening system; gear bearing add UHMPE material; Matco brake mod;
etc. etc.. etc..). Some days I'm not sure if I'm discouraged because it
seems I'm going backwards, or happy that I have a 'new' project to work on!
Anyways, keep plugging away and I'll see you at a fly in one day soon and we
can have a beverage together to celebrate!

I had not heard about Sebastian being ill. Hope everything works out for
him.
As to difficulties with the ZAC drawings I must admit I have been
frustrated with the manual layout. I am building a 601HDS from a kit. I
usually find that if I stop and read further ahead and layout the pieces it
all makes since. Also when I have had questions the factory has been very
responsive to my questions.
My father and I have been building for two years and are now into the
forward fuselage.

equivalent. They are great source of information. I have progress
regularly inspected by our local advisor.

Interesting... when I ordered my prop from Warp Drive
earlier this year, I discussed that on the phone with
the technician. He advised me to take the standard
blade because with the HD, I would'nt get benefits
from the more expensive blade (too much drag). He
also advised me NOT to buy the nickel leading edge
protection unless this is a float plane.

Guess you didn't see my e-mail sent directly to you on July 5, 2003.
Recommendations before further flight:
1. install aileron balance weights per the old Zenair newsletter. I'd bet that
the Midland office would office would promptly fax the newsletter page to you.
2. obtain Chris Hientz approval for any cable system design change you make (additional
pulleys can 'soften' the system, lowering flutter speed).
3. Check both ends of the aileron push rods for looseness. The flutter you've
experienced can, for example, wear the hardware increasing looseness.
Also, some CH300 ailerons are heavy because they are not built 'to drawing' (i.e.
have extra ribs). The extra weight lowers the aileron flutter speed. The
balance weights restore and add flutter speed margin.

I have been flying with a Warp Drive prop now for the past year.=0D
I HIGHLY recommend the prop, but would also HIGHLY recommend=0D
that you do in fact purchase the nickel leading edge. Small nicks are=0D
easily fixed on the prop with any 5 minute epoxy, however the leading edge=0D
is not an area that you want to have chuncks out of. The nickel leading
edge=0D
has held up wonderfully and when it does get hit and dented it is very easy
to=0D
gently pound or squeeze it back to it's normal shape.=0D

Steve,
I've documented the throttle from what most people do
when following the plans to the change to push-pull throttle just written
about. The journal
and the pictures are very detailed, but if you wish, please address my email
or call
me at 309-792-0472 evenings or weekends. There are too many subarus running
well without problems to
allow the latest issues presented to get to you. These cumulative inputs
will ferret out the latest reported
cooling problems and result in a consensus of what works best well before
you or I are done
with our planes. I've also added a pressure recovery segment at the front
of my radiator to
permit the air to flow thru more easily. At 100 mph, a round radiator hose
becomes nearly twice its
size in airflow as does the rough end of the radiator exposed to the
airstream. This reduces the air
going thru it quite a bit. The pictures just precede the throttle changes
mentioned on the Subaru page

CH 601 HDS tailwheel N928DN Self built subaru EA81.
3rd Flight today. Out side temp. was about 75.Engine still running warm. Installed
new guage, Old guage was all over the place.
Ivo Prop 3 blade Medium. 4200 RPM GPS shows 121 MPH average. If I push it faster
the temp starts climbing. Been playing with different size lip on bottom of
cowl. 1st small lip seemed to help. Hope to make a smaller lip and fly agin tomorrow.
Sure is fun to fly, Just sit there and think about turning and the plane
almost takes care of the flying it self.
Great landing gear. Been making simi wheel-stall landing, Feels good in the plane
and everybody watching says looks great
