Details of my setup are, 1. Aircraft CH601 HDS 2. Engine Jabiru 3300 3. Propellor Warp Drive three blade 62" Thanks in anticipation, john livsey ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 05:37:54 AM PST US From: "The Meiste's" Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Flight Report --> Zenith-List message posted by: "The Meiste's" Dave, My Stratus powered HD did the same thing when new, took a lot of tweaking to get it under control. Here are a few tips that seemed to help me the most: 1. Slow down .... keep it around 3,800 RPM until you start getting things under control. 2. Cut away as much of the lower cowl as possible (as you dare). 3. Also my lip actually made my temps higher so I ended up removing it. Kelly 601 HD (60 hrs) > CH 601 HDS tailwheel N928DN Self built subaru EA81. > 3rd Flight today. Out side temp. was about 75.Engine still running warm. Installed new guage, Old guage was all over the place. > Ivo Prop 3 blade Medium. 4200 RPM GPS shows 121 MPH average. If I push it faster the temp starts climbing. Been playing with different size lip on bottom of cowl. 1st small lip seemed to help. Hope to make a smaller lip and fly agin tomorrow. Sure is fun to fly, Just sit there and think about turning and the plane almost takes care of the flying it self. > Great landing gear. Been making simi wheel-stall landing, Feels good in the plane and everybody watching says looks great ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 05:49:31 AM PST US From: ZODIAC601@aol.com Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Zenith Open Hanger Day --> Zenith-List message posted by: ZODIAC601@aol.com KEN SCHMIDT WILL BE THERE ! ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 06:16:40 AM PST US From: "Ronnie Koonce" Subject: Zenith-List: 701 front wing strut alignment --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Ronnie Koonce" Has anyone had any trouble with the alignment of the front wing struts?I have quadruple checked all af my settings and measurements, and they are difficult to install, both sides. They are based on the 1- or 2-rotor wankel-type engines used several years ago in a Norton motorcycle. The 2-rotor with EFI puts out 105HP from a 122 lbs package! It should work well in a 701. I almost wish I had chosen to use one of them. You can find them at: www.avnet.co.uk/midwestengines/ Phil Raker N556P - HDS/Stratus: ~80% --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Mike Fraley" Hi! Anyone ever hear of a Rotary (Wankel) type engine / conversion that produces around 100hp that might work in a 701? I see plenty in the 150-200 range, and some around 70hp, but not 100. Not building yet.... just thinking & researching.... They should slip on with no bind. Call ZAC and describe your problem.... they'll make good on a replacement set. That rotation angle was 4 degrees different from the right strut. ZAC agreed to send me a replacement strut, but that would have taken considerable time. At the advice of my IA, and with the concurrence of ZAC, we made up a jig for the correct angle, heated the strut tube up to dull red, twisted it to fit the jig, and slow cooled it by backing off the heat for a few minutes. Worked great and fit fine. On Bill Wilcox's 801, the fork on the lower end of one strug was misaligned by a couple degrees longitudnally. We followed a similar procedure to tweak that angle and got a good fit. Also check in the back issues of the Zenith newsletters (the exact # escapes me at the moment). The lower cowl half have a lip around the rear opening. This lip is about 45 degrees and about a inch high. This lip is supposed to help pull the air out of the hot engine compartment. With the Stratus installation this lip is removed when you added the F/G oil pan scoop. I ended up making a new one from aluminum but ended up removing it later after finding it made my engine temps run higher (go figure?). I saw the factory 601XL at Copperstate last year, but I finally saw a user-built one yesterday. Two weekends ago, I was driving around the airport (FFZ) trying to meet up with a friend with a brake and shear I wanted to use. Out from between the hangers comes a 601HDS taxiing out. You see, at FFZ, RV's are a dime a dozen, but this Zenith really surprised me. I went to the end of the row only to find that my friend wasn't "home", and did a U-turn. Got back onto the main taxiway and the Zenith was GONE! *grumble* Got in touch with my friend, and asked him to figure out who the Zenith driver was, if possible. Long story short, I managed to meet up with the him yesterday morning. David does nice work, and the 601HDS is a clean little craft, although he was repeating a common theme, "It doesn't go as fast as the book says it should." (He's got the 80hp Rotax) I got to sit in it too. All I can say is, "Wow!" I was a little concerned at the "contorted" look of the seats in the 601 (with the legs over the center spar), but my fears have been completely destroyed. The seating arrangement in the 601 (and the Y-stick) feels completely natural and comfortable. He was already planning on giving rides to some friends that were helping him polish, so I didn't get to make a pilot report, although one was promised. Seeing a non-factory Zenith really gave me a renewed sense of ambition, although I'm a LONG way from completion. The comfort level is great and the 601 bubble view is awsome, and probably the best thing about the airplane. It's an easy one to fly. If one just wanted to go fast, this might be the wrong plane, but I think you can get close to the advertised speeds with the new Jabaru 3300. For the scratch builder, this plane is a joy to build. I have heard on this list where some are using electric motors to operate flaps. The Murphy has flaperons and we want to operate them electrically. Any information, no matter how minor would be greatly appreciated. Please reply off list so as not to annoy those not interested.
