To the list:
Yesterday, Sunday, August 17, I made my first REAL flight in my
601HD-N601GV.
The flight was cut very short. One circuit in the pattern. Fortunately
I had made several crow hops so I had a good feel for the approach and
flair and the landing went smoothly.
Shortly after takeoff and first turn to cross-wind, I noticed my oil
temp starting to climb dramatically. As I turned down-wind ( I had
planned to gradually climb while staying in a rectangular pattern over
the airport) the oil temp shot to max on my guage and the oil pressure
dropped to zero. The water temp never went above 220 ( a little high
but not a major problem) and some oil formed on the passenger side
canopy ( a real first for this engine). I reported a short final from
about 500 to 700 feet AGL and landied well within the first 1/3 of the
runway. (York airpost-THV- has a 5000 foot paved)
With cowl off we could find no obvious problem other than light coat of
oil-had come out the breather port on the right. No coolant loss. Will
now start trouble shooting before any further flights. But a short 5
minute flight sure felt good after 9 years in the shop.
Will report more when have it figured out.

I'm working on the right wing and have two questions related to the
electrics. The Fuel sender plans say "ground to the airframe." Where
does everyone suggest I do this.
Also where are you guys connecting the Black cable from the
Strobe/Marker lights power supply ground/negative?

Some engine coolant problems are the result of an air bubble. You might
check your system to make sure that it is bled of air.

If you ever fly in rain w/ a Warp blade for more than a few minutes, the outer
3" of the prop leading edge will be ERODED badly!! Buy the Nickel leading edge!!
Been there done that.

Hello Phil,
Are you aware of any of this rotary engines flying in USA? I will like
to contact any owner/pilot, doesnt matter in what plane is installed.
As always any dependable alternative to the 912 (lower price) is
interesting to keep a follow up. Soob, Geo, Cam100...
Saludos

Thanks kelly
Greetings list
Tested the new lip today, It did not keep the engine from getting warm, But keep
it from heating up as fast. As Kelly says I think I need a larger hole in the
bottom to let more air out. I also had repitched the prop a little. 4400 RPM
showed up wind 114 MPH and 138 MPH down wind. GPS Cannot approch red line because
gets too hot. Still a blast to fly.

Hi Dave,
do you have a picture available of the lip you attached to the lower
cowling? I was running somewhat high with my oil temps due to the high
temperatures here. Thus, I made the inlet opening bigger - didn't bring a
lot. Want to try the lip next...
Thanks

Subject: | Warp Drive Prop - ideal length? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Grant Corriveau <grantc@ca.inter.net>
Thanks George! My 'todo' list just keeps getting longer and longer! ;-) I
was thinking of sending my blades into Warp Drive to shorten them an inch or
two... now I'll probably get them to add the nickle leading edges too.
--
I find that my 70" prop is great for acceleration, but for cruise I might
prefer 66-68". This should allow me to increase the blade pitch angle
without lugging the engine.
I know that you went to a two blade prop. What length is yours? (if you
don't mine my asking ;-)
Anyone else care to respond?

Gig- I brought the fuel sender ground out to the outside of the wing root
rib and used a small nut, bolt, lock washer to ground it to the rib. (Don't
use a rivet as it will work loose quickly). The strobe light ground I
grounded to the spar extension at the wing tip. I put an access hole on the
bottom of each nose skin at the wing tip, so I can service the strobe
transformer. I also put quick disconnects on each wire that can be accessed
from the inspection hole.. Hope this helps- Al Young XL builder.

Subject: | Warp Drive Prop - ideal length? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: <george.pinneo@ngc.com>
I'm flying a 2-bladed Warp, Ni-leading edge, 68" tapered blade. Pitch is set to
deliver 4,900-5,000 rpm static max. My 912 Rotax, both radiators in-cowl, HDS
tri-gear, gains 1,780' (from 520' MSL) at midfield, downwind, before I depart
on the right 45 degree turnout from the downwind. I typically climb at about
70 knots; in cooler air, the climb is faster.
I tried 68" three-blade Warp blades, both tapered and straight, but didn't see
any improvement over the 2-blade. The 2-blade is 4 lbs lighter.
Saturday I made the 2nd best landing in my career: the Rotax Flydat flashed a warning
as my oil pressure dropped to 1.0 bar. I reversed my course from the downwind
departure with power back to idle and made a short approach, basically
gliding down from 2,400' to 520' MSL.
On landing I found no oil leaks and no blockage; oil reservoir was unchanged from
the preflight inspection. The oil filter was pristine: no crud, no metal, just
oil. It looks like the drive-pin in my oil-pump has worn to the point it
slips. I had 4.5 bar oil pressure @ 3,000 rpm at runup!
I've ordered a new drive-pin and O-rings from Lockwood; I'll tell you more when
I get them installed and see if I can get the oil-pump to work properly again.
I have about 319. hours on the pump. Life's an intelligence test, always!

There are several of us who contact each other using Yahoo messenger. It is a
free download and if have a mic on your puter the voice chat is an extra
plus. I am at stol83001 or n801bh on Yahoo messenger. Feel free to contact me
for
any info you need. My plane is all done firewall back and I am welding up my
mount for my Ford V-8. Jim Frisby is right behind me and Haiko Eishler got his
flying a few days ago with a Subaru EG-33 230 Hp engine in his. Ohhh, the
blessing of an experimental Plane. After owning several certified planes I will
be damned if I ever want to see another yellow tagged piece junk try to kill
me again..
All the guys and girls at ZAC are very good at helping out us builders too.

Dave,
Be careful enlarging that exit, as it is in a high pressure area. The lip
is there to create a low pressure zone. No low pressure at the outlet = no
movement of air through the radiator.
