The flight was cut very short. One circuit in the pattern. Fortunately I had made several crow hops so I had a good feel for the approach and flair and the landing went smoothly. Shortly after takeoff and first turn to cross-wind, I noticed my oil temp starting to climb dramatically. As I turned down-wind ( I had planned to gradually climb while staying in a rectangular pattern over the airport) the oil temp shot to max on my guage and the oil pressure dropped to zero. The water temp never went above 220 ( a little high but not a major problem) and some oil formed on the passenger side canopy ( a real first for this engine). I reported a short final from about 500 to 700 feet AGL and landied well within the first 1/3 of the runway. (York airpost-THV- has a 5000 foot paved) With cowl off we could find no obvious problem other than light coat of oil-had come out the breather port on the right. No coolant loss. Will now start trouble shooting before any further flights. But a short 5 minute flight sure felt good after 9 years in the shop. Will report more when have it figured out. As Kelly says I think I need a larger hole in the bottom to let more air out. I also had repitched the prop a little. 4400 RPM showed up wind 114 MPH and 138 MPH down wind. GPS Cannot approch red line because gets too hot. Still a blast to fly. My 'todo' list just keeps getting longer and longer! ;-) I was thinking of sending my blades into Warp Drive to shorten them an inch or two... now I'll probably get them to add the nickle leading edges too. -- I find that my 70" prop is great for acceleration, but for cruise I might prefer 66-68". This should allow me to increase the blade pitch angle without lugging the engine. I know that you went to a two blade prop. What length is yours? (Don't use a rivet as it will work loose quickly). The strobe light ground I grounded to the spar extension at the wing tip. I put an access hole on the bottom of each nose skin at the wing tip, so I can service the strobe transformer. I also put quick disconnects on each wire that can be accessed from the inspection hole.. My 912 Rotax, both radiators in-cowl, HDS tri-gear, gains 1,780' (from 520' MSL) at midfield, downwind, before I depart on the right 45 degree turnout from the downwind. I typically climb at about 70 knots; in cooler air, the climb is faster. I tried 68" three-blade Warp blades, both tapered and straight, but didn't see any improvement over the 2-blade. The 2-blade is 4 lbs lighter. Saturday I made the 2nd best landing in my career: the Rotax Flydat flashed a warning as my oil pressure dropped to 1.0 bar. I reversed my course from the downwind departure with power back to idle and made a short approach, basically gliding down from 2,400' to 520' MSL. On landing I found no oil leaks and no blockage; oil reservoir was unchanged from the preflight inspection. The oil filter was pristine: no crud, no metal, just oil. It looks like the drive-pin in my oil-pump has worn to the point it slips. I had 4.5 bar oil pressure @ 3,000 rpm at runup! I've ordered a new drive-pin and O-rings from Lockwood; I'll tell you more when I get them installed and see if I can get the oil-pump to work properly again. I have about 319. hours on the pump. After owning several certified planes I will be damned if I ever want to see another yellow tagged piece junk try to kill me again..
