No, Gary, I don't know of any Midwest engines in this country. I'm sure there
are some, but I don't know where. I know there are several in the UK. You
might try asking some of the folks at gezub.org.uk - I think perhaps some of
them have used the Midwest rotary engine. Notice that on the Midwest website,
they feature their own CH601-HD (with dual control sticks) on the homepage!

Hello Phil,
Are you aware of any of this rotary engines flying in USA? I will like
to contact any owner/pilot, doesnt matter in what plane is installed.
As always any dependable alternative to the 912 (lower price) is
interesting to keep a follow up. Soob, Geo, Cam100...
Saludos
Gary Gower.

The goal is to "GET THE BAD AIR OUT". Do not try to push it out with a
larger front opening. Exit should be about 3 times area of inlet. The
exit must be in a low pressure area, that is what "lips", cowl flaps
are for.

I just cheked the web site for that engine company....am I missing
something? An engine that weighs barely over 100 pounds, and produces
over 100hp??? Sounds too good to be true. Anyone know what that thing
costs?

List . . . is it perhaps possible that the 601 at Oskosh had the clear Cortec 373
corrosion protection and appeared not to be protected? Just a thought. I
got a message from the Cortec people that the clear could be tinted with pigment.
I am trying to find out from them what type of pigment. Hap Schoenberger

I was talking with Roger while I was at the factory last week and they
are using a clear coating on their parts for the class now, so I am
guessing you are correct.

The Mid West engine was originally a Norton inspired Wankel rotary which was
built in single and twin rotor form, the 100hp engine being the twin rotor
engine. The company did campaign a 601HD for a while but I haven't seen it
around lately. The company is now in Germany, taken over by somebody else
after the British Government pumped taxpayers' money into it in the form of
development grants.
There is also an ARV Super Two in the UK with one of their engines.
They sound as if they're screaming their nuts off when they're running and I
think the exhausts run red hot. Personally wouldn't touch one with a
barge-pole even if they were cheap, and I'm pretty sure they aren't.

Yup I agree with Leo try to get at least 3:1 exhaust area vs intake. But
with that large shark mouth opening we have for an intake I'd have to
totally remove my lower cowl to get a 3:1 ratio!
I'd guess I'm 2:1 at best, so that's possibly why I didn't have any luck
with getting my "lip" to do any good???

Subject: | Rotary Engine Update |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Mike Fraley" <mike@theautoexpo.com>
Hello All!
I've been looking into Rotary's for the last couple weeks, and here are a few
things I've found....
Atkins Rotary ( www.atkinsrotary.com) has a single rotor version, but no reduction drive. Rans aircraft are developing a drive for it, and plan to offer the package as an option. Dave Atkins says he has talked to Chris Heitz about using the eng. on ZAC planes, and Chris has said send him an eng and psru drive and they'll design the mounts... so again, they're waiting on the dirve.
Also, a couple companies overseas market a variety of rotarys, some certified to european standards. And interestingly, Midwest Rotarys of Germany ( http://www.avnet.co.uk/midwestengines/) features a rotary powered 601 on they're home page. If I've converted from metric correctly, I believe thier AE 110 eng. weighs in at 121 pounds, while producing 105 horsepower. Not to bad!
I will pass on any other interesting links I come across. And Gary... check out www.rotaryaviation.com .... they're flying various rotary powered RV products in the US.

You guys just did not look hard enough. The 601XL taildragger fuselage at
Oshkosh had some sort of greenish almost varnish looking substance in all of
the riveted areas. It may have been cortec or it could have been something
else. Much of the area around the seats had nothing coating the parts but
this area was mostly clecoed so maybe when it is time for rivets it will get
green varnish.

I read somewhere that Diamond aircraft own mid west engines
and that they are planing to put this rotary engine in the Katana.
Here is an article about this from
http://www.diamond-air.at/en/press/pressarchive/304242.htm
April 24th, 2003
New Version of Katana
The Katana will now be equipped with the 110-HP Wankel engine. This engine,
formerly made by Midwest, has belonged to the Diamond Group for some time
and is now called the Diamond ENGINES. The airframe, based on the DA20-C1,
has a single cockpit, is equipped with a COM NAV and fixed-pitch propeller
as standard equipment and will be certified next year. In terms of
operating costs, the 3,000-euro basic overhaul is extremely favorable, due
to the small number of parts that need to be replaced. The aircraft is to
be operated with 90 or 95 octane aviation gas.
There was a more detailed article somewhere but I cant find it now.
