As one of the attendees I was privileged to see two of the most beautiful homebuilts I have ever seen. Fred's aircraft along with Jeff Small's were featured in the hangar display area. Words cannot fully express the beauty and workmanship on these two 601's. Jeff said that he had read Kent Paser's book Speed with Economy seven times. He has applied much of Kent's book and can now accelerate to Red Line. Speed and beauty in the same aircraft. Is the 3-in-1 strobe/nav/pos a good idea or is it better to go with the strobe/nav on the wing tips and leave the position light on the rudder for better visibility? 2. Are there any links to builders pages showing some different options for inserting a landing light in the wing? I can tell you that they won't fit on the "pad" that is on the wingtip. Also the position light will not be visible directly behind the plane. I made my own "pad" to mount them on. I ended up extending them out away from the tips about 1 inch. To make them, drill holes for the wires, then I piled modeling clay on the tips where I wanted the lights. Then press the light assembly in place and attach the wires to a battery. Verify that the position light and strobe can be seen while standing directly behind the rudder. I believe the rules are that the left and right lights have to converge within 1200 ft. Mine converge within 100 ft. If needed the clay can be adjusted to make this happen. When you have the clay shaped the way you want it, use duct tape to tape off the surrounding area. Remove the light assembly, hopefully without disturbing the clay. Then fiberglass over the clay. A day or 2 later, carefully pull off the fiberglass, trim and use filler to fix any imperfections. After you clean all the clay off the plane you can either glue them on or use rivets. BTW, My DAR would not give me night VFR for phase 2. He insisted that I needed a beacon on the tail as well. I tried to convince him otherwise but it was kind of like arguing with a cop about running a stop sign. I'm about to start cutting holes in N633Z's instrument panel (probably the end of this week). Before I do I wouldn't mind helpful comments regarding the layout and a cross check in case I've overlooked anything major. To see the mockup go to http://www.cleanh2o.com/n633z/ TIA, Joe ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 07:09:31 PM PST US From: "Jim Frisby" Subject: Re: Zenith-List: N633Z instrument panel - a 601XL - would you like to comment?? --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Jim Frisby" Joe, Your layout looks pretty good, I kind of like to have the tach in my primary scan, you could move it to the area above your avionics, but I suspsect you are reserving that area for more radios. You could put a digital tach display some where on the left side, If your engine can support that. I am considering to buy Drawing and Manual (must be original with reg. number) for 601HD; before ordering them from the company I would like to know if there is any list member that would like to sale them. 73, Dr. Tsabari Shahar Italy
