In case anyone hasn't used the instrument panel program, try:

Great way of moving stuff around before cutting metal.
I sent in my donation; probably saved me a bunch of money and time.

I saw your instrument panel mockup and the one thing I want to say is that if
you are installing the standard 16-gallon fuel tank that there are two
fuel-tank strap hold-up brackets attached to the back side of the IP panel and
hence
you may need to slightly re-arrange your mockup for the brackets.
Good luck!

Does the prop flange get centered with the opening in the cowling or does the
cowling mount parallel with the fuselage centerline?
Thanks

I know this may sound rather stupid ( ok I opened myself up to some shots ) but
this is my first 4 stroke, having flown Rotax 2 strokes until now. In the 2
stroke gearboxes you add oil to them but as I read the manuals, the 912 box uses
the engine oil and circulates it through the gearbox. Is this the right assumption?

Has to be centered with the prop flange, the rear part of the cowling
has to be adjusted carefully to the firewall. Is a try and fit
process, a little at a time, use a soft pen to mark every new line so
you dont over do. We are doing that this week. Almost been there done
that :-) We work fiberglass for a living, so we are going to do some
cosmetic work to the cowling later, first has to fly!

I am new to the net and I didn't got any answers to my plans search, dose that
mean that I have to present my self before? In any case I am from north Italy
Lake Garda working as a research medical doctor and I like to fly.
I would like to build my own 601 as before I was thinking about Q2 and KR2S, I
realise that I have more experience working with metal then working with wood
and I don't want to brief toxic vapours of epoxy for more then a year or so.
It is hard to me to decide what to build HD or HDS; it is not the complexity of
the HDS that worry me so please fill free to subject any thing else.
Dose any body know the gliding efficiency ratio of the HD and of the HDS.
Many thanks to all of you and hopping to enjoy the community courtesy.
Best Regards,
Shahar

Yes Lowell, is like the modern motorcycles, by the way I will advise
you to use only the best motorcycle oil you can find, ask for the one
for engine/gear box. The engine will not use oil, so is the same
amount every oil change (we were advised to change it every 25 hrs).
By the way, the engine is in the plane but has not made started yet.

Thanks for the heads up. It turned out that 's just the way it worked out.
Trial & error. The pilots side ended up to be 1.25" fiberglass overlap & the
starboard side is 2" overlap. (Royal Navy talk there!) Needed to cut 1/8" to 1/4"
clearance slot for the oil cooler (912s engine). The upper opening will need
some refineing with a file to obtain requisite radiator clearance at the ends.
Make a 2" slot for the nose fork on centerline & keep it tight for starters &
also notches for the 2 small float attach points. From here you can refine
your positioning by enlarging the slots on side(s) required. This worked well &
we finished today. Although we started with some trepidation, going slowly we
resulted in a balanced looking installation which appears to be remarkably
rigid. From reading others peoples notes, we don't think much of the ZAC
moldings either. Good luck.

Shahar,
I would presume that the lack of response means that no one wants to
sell their set of plans. Rarely have I seen them for resale. I even bought
another builder's kit and he kept the plans. I would suggest strongly that
you consider the current model of the 601, the 601 XL. Details are on the
ZAC web site.

Yes, that's correct. I had a hard time finding the right oil, it's for
motorcycles, and ended up getting it from Lockwood Aviation. It's an oil
that will handle the requirements of the engine and the gearbox.

The HDS and HD are for the most part the same plane except for
the wing panels which can interchange by the way. The real answer
comes from Zenair. The newest model is the 601 XL which gives the
best performance figures of both (aprox) with the a change in wing
design and the addition of flaps. How much do you expect to save
on a used set of plans?? (Please do not answer) The real
thing to remember is that what comes along with the plans is the
factory support and if you look at the price of a new set of plans
that support is a good buy. So in closing when you consider
that the best penny pincher in the world would still spend thousands
to build a 601 - HD-HDS-XL whats another $100 or $200 for new
plans instead of used ones from someones closet.
One last note.....HD or HDS .....there is no wrong choice.
