You only have to be the primary builder. Given the state of this kit, I
think you should be fine. That is assuming it is the same kit as the one I
was considering to replace my Zodiac.

I introduced myself to this list probably six months ago and promptly
disapeared. Just resubbed and bought a partially done ch601HD, along with
ea81 Stratus, firewall forward kit, etc. Any thoughts on how far along they
will allow a plane to be before I can't get the repairman's certificate?

That does give you toe in or out but unfortunatly it does not tell you if it is
centered relative to center line of airplane. Another method is to drop plumb
lines from the center of airplane front and rear. Hold a 4' straight edge next
to the tire and have a friend drop a plumb line from each end. Do this both
sides and compare each end to the centerline. You will have to convert this
1/16" to degrees hovever. Can't advise on trigear planes, used 0 toe in-out on
three taildraggers (RV3, Glasair and Legal Eagle) and they all track perfectly.
You can however get many opinions on this subject, I guess that is why it's

Does anyone have Nick's email address (support@zenithair.com?) so I can send
him a sketch of a modification for approval?
If anyone is interested, I'm hoping to splice two peices together for the
12' rear wing channel so I don't have to bend a 12' channel as one piece.
Thanks in advance,

Subject: | Tire rubbing on wheel fork |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Robert Rehmel" <traveler601@earthlink.net>
I am working on my landing gear. I put the wheel forks together and
drilled the holes for the axle. The centers are right on. The hub spins
free and does not wobble relative to the wheel forks, but when I added the
tires that came with the kit, 4.80X8, it rubs in spots on the wheel fork.
The rubber weaves back and forth.
I have one side that is perfect, but the other two tires rub the wheel
fork. The tire pressure is set to 90 lbs as per what is listed on the side
wall of the tire. I have tried both remaining tires and have even used a
different fork.
Any ideas.
One other question where the devil do you find replacement tires? I have
been looking for a spare set of tubes and tires. Pinched one of the tubes
in the split rim.

Try: nheintz@zenithair.com (that's what's on his business card) Or:
info@zenithair.com they both work for me.

90 lbs!!! I fly my 601HDS tail dragger with only 25 psi. You are going to
have tires that feel like concrete! Is that 90 psi the maximum rating on the
tire? You certainly don't need that much pressure.

Robert,
The pressure printed on the tire is the absolute max pressure it can
tolerate. Chris H says inflate till the weight of the aircraft depresses
the tire by one third, rim to ground. That's about 25 lbs in my book.

That 90 PSI probably explains the rubbing. Your tires are way over-inflated, and
have probably expanded some. Go back to about 25 PSI, and the problem will most
likely go away. Also, remember that almost no tire is perfectly round, or
symmetrical in either tread or sidewall

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Garrou, Douglas" <dgarrou@hunton.com>
After lighting up the list with discussion about not priming 6061 aluminum,
I feel compelled to share Nick's views on the subject:
--------
[we observed no ZnCr on the 601 fuselage at OSH]
>You are right, on the fuselage we had at Oshkosh only the rear
>fuselage was primed with the green Zinc Chromate. To have the
>fuselage ready for the show, the cabin area of the fuselage was not
>primed.
[Does Zenith prime the parts that require ZnCr?]
>No, in the kit we do not prime the parts. We only apply the zinc
>chromate on pre- assembled parts, such as the main wing spar and
>cabin
>sides.
[Any reason for us to keep spraying primer?]
>An alternative to spraying is to brush the primer using a bristle
>brush.
[Will the 6061 survive without the extra protection?]
>It is all a question of time. Zinc chromate has an outstanding
>history
>to prevent corrosion. The same cannot be said for parts that are
>not
>treated.
--------
So there you have it. I'd love to see a study or something, but for now
we're going with Nick and priming (mating surfaces, at least).
Meanwhile.... We think trunk paint is really cool. We theorize it would be
a simple and utilitarian way to do the interior of an 801. I noticed a lot
of composite aircraft at OSH used it for just that purpose, but didn't see
many (any?) aluminum aircraft that used it. Has anybody experimented with
it on 6061? Maybe it doesn't adhere as well to AL?
Cheers,
Doug "we're using ZnCr after all" Garrou

Scott,
I've always sent Nick my concerns via info@zenithair.com and got a rather

Hello 701 Builders! I'm interested to know how long you took to build your 701,
(or a conservative estimate of how long it will take you.) I've heard people
talk about build times over 1000 hours, but the company still advertises and
claims an average of 400-450 hours. I'm just looking to get an average idea
of what my father and I can expect as first time builders.
Also... got that ride in a 701 last week.... thanks much to Tom Lazear of Ohio....
Tom's 701 is beautiful with a cool center console he designed... runs
from under the panel to the floor for additional instrument space... very neat
install.... It also flew wonderfully with the 912!
Still looking for info on Midwest eng's rotarys... email to the company go
no response....
Thanks in advance for any info!

I would say that anybody can build their SECOND 701 in 400 hours.
Might build the third one in 350 hours. It gets easier AFTER you've done it.

Mike,
I'm slow. As a first time builder and alone, I measured, and remeasured but
still made errors. I had to do most of the fire wall forward installation
and cowl design from scratch. Including painting fuselage and tail, I have
about 2800 hours in it. some photos at http://members.thegateway.net/cfd

If you don't mind the discrepancies in plan dimensions, don't mind that parts don't
fit (the header tank among other things in the kit that would not fit per
plans, so I've had to build my own), if you don't mind the looks of the Zenith
cowl (again, I built my own), and numerous other little problems of what I think
is an excellent aircraft design that has been passed on
for the later designs that can go faster, you might build in in low hours. I'm
figuring that mine will be flying sometime in the very near future. I think I
am going to have an airplane that will do exactly what I wanted it to do when
I purchased the kit 4 years ago. 1000+ hrs and not quite there.
