I would be careful when checking toe for a tail dragger. You
definitely do not want any toe in.
Neutral to slight toe out helps to keep things going straight.

++I'd have to dissagree with that Alex. Check the archives for how
"production tail-draggers" are set up.

I''m a first time 701 builder - have about 400 - 500 hrs into the project so far.
Tail completed and 80% of right wing. It's not the build time that's so
lengthy - it's the studying of the plans and trying to solve problems common to
someone unfamiliar with metal construction. I estimate the ratio of studying
of the plans to actual build time is between 1:1 to 2:1.
Take courage though. It does get easier, and one's confidence level increases
which helps immensely. My guess is that I'll have about 1,500 hours in it by
the time I fly. I just bought 34 acres for a home with an airstrip so I do have
some incentive. Hap Schoenberger

All this discussion regarding building time has me wondering several things,
and I'd appreciate your inputs. While I'd like everyone's input, I would
really appreciate it if some of you who have already gone through your
airworthiness inspection process to answer (please remember to mention which
country the certification was granted)
1. Is timekeeping mandated by the FAA (or comparable applicable agency), or
are you simply keeping this tally for your own records?
1a. If mandated, what does the inspector want to see?
2. How detailed are your time records?
2a. Are you making a point of breaking up your time records by each
part built? each phase?
3. Are you including your non-building tasks? eg: plans studying time,
internet research time, parts aquisition, replying to people on this thread
etc?

Subject: | Trunk Paint for Interior Painting |

I've painted the interior of my 601 with Plasti Kote Trunk Paint.
Used the gray/black/white speckle #305. First, brush primed with Stronium
Chromate (Zinc Chromate I'm sure would work as well). Then sprayed on
Plasti Kote gray primer to get a uniform gray color. Sprayed the speckle
next. Finally, applied a Plasti Kote Clear Top Coat. They recommend this
to waterproof the finish. It amounts to a lot of painting and I suppose
some extra weight. The alternative is carpeting which isn't light either.
Had good results with this stuff and it seems to stick fine. Was a bit
disappointed, however, with the baggage floor area. Difficult to get a
uniform shade of gray/black over the whole thing. Where I overlapped the
paint, it came out slightly darker. Also the beginning of the can has a
different consistency than the end of the can. It starts out heavily
speckled with no shine, and ends less speckled with a more semi-gloss, oily
consistency. Could be my fault, maybe I didn't shake the cans enough? I
think the Top Coat reduces the gloss issue. In the painted areas which
were smaller in size, the results were uniform and very eye pleasing to
look at. The speckling hides inperfections and really gives a finished
appearance that doesn't look like you did it with a spray can in the back
of your garage. I think it also helps to paint the parts in a vertical
orientation to allow the spray can to be held upright. If I had to do it
all over again, I certainly would.

Meanwhile.... We think trunk paint is really cool. We theorize it would be
a simple and utilitarian way to do the interior of an 801. I noticed a lot
of composite aircraft at OSH used it for just that purpose, but didn't see
many (any?) aluminum aircraft that used it. Has anybody experimented with
it on 6061? Maybe it doesn't adhere as well to AL?
Cheers,

Also depends very much in how do you like your finishing. Details take
a lot of time. a "comercial" finish in the parts, might be in the 600
hrs, but if you want it to look like you are not "paid for the day"
when you built it, then at least 1,000 hrs... Round the corners, hide
the cables, aply a little touch up, you name it.

Although I haven't gotten to the certification stage, I did have a
conversation with an EAA Technical Counselor who indicated that detailed and
accurate construction records along with photos that show you working on
various stages of the project will help you in obtaining the repairman's
certificate that will allow you to make your own annual condition
inspections. The degree that this is needed is probably depends on the DAR
that you are dealing with...

Didn't ZAC build a 601 in four days at Sun 'n Fun two or three years ago?

Check out the Zenith web site guys. Jeff Small and I sent pictures taken at Open
Hanger Day to Sebastian Heintz and he has now posted 21 of them. Click on
"news and media center" (found on Zenith opening page), then click on "Photos
