Chuck, thanks so much for sharing your first-hand experiences with trunk
paint. This list is great for info like this. For example I didn't even
know Plasti Kote had a gray primer....
If there are any photos of your interior work available anywhere, we'd love
to take a look!
What you say about "hiding imperfections" is exactly our thinking. Seems
like trunk paint could cover a lot of sins for a fraction of the work of
carpeting, interior panels, etc. etc.
Cheers

I've painted the interior of my 601 with Plasti Kote Trunk Paint.
Used the gray/black/white speckle #305. First, brush primed with Stronium
Chromate (Zinc Chromate I'm sure would work as well). Then sprayed on
Plasti Kote gray primer to get a uniform gray color. Sprayed the speckle
next. Finally, applied a Plasti Kote Clear Top Coat. They recommend this
to waterproof the finish. It amounts to a lot of painting and I suppose
some extra weight. The alternative is carpeting which isn't light either.
Had good results with this stuff and it seems to stick fine. Was a bit
disappointed, however, with the baggage floor area. Difficult to get a
uniform shade of gray/black over the whole thing. Where I overlapped the
paint, it came out slightly darker. Also the beginning of the can has a
different consistency than the end of the can. It starts out heavily
speckled with no shine, and ends less speckled with a more semi-gloss, oily
consistency. Could be my fault, maybe I didn't shake the cans enough? I
think the Top Coat reduces the gloss issue. In the painted areas which
were smaller in size, the results were uniform and very eye pleasing to
look at. The speckling hides inperfections and really gives a finished
appearance that doesn't look like you did it with a spray can in the back
of your garage. I think it also helps to paint the parts in a vertical
orientation to allow the spray can to be held upright. If I had to do it
all over again, I certainly would.

When I went through the Rudder Workshop this time last year the Gemini
seemed to be on indefinite hold. That was per Sebastian.

Hi All,
I just joined this list and was hoping to tap into your knowledge. Was
looking at the 601 kit a few years ago, but other priorities in life came
first. Is the Zodiac XL now the top of the line of the 601 series? Any
performance specs with Rotax 914 turbo? How does a Zodiac XL fly as
compared to a Cessna 152, PA-161 or M20C? And which one is easier to build,
601 or 701? I kinda like 701's STOL & swing-wing capabilities, but 601
looks simpler and a better cross-country plane.
Also, how helpful is that factory 2-day workshop? I am pretty handy with
tools. Does the workshop go beyond this and teach skills specific to good
airplane building?
Thanx...Eddie

The Gemini is Zenith's prototype little twin, based
roughly on 601 frame. It's the red one in Open Hanger
Day pics.
I believe I heard someone in Mexico say that it's been
re-powered with 2 Jabiru 2200 (4-cyl.)
Seems they pulled it out of cold storage, dusted it
off for Open Hanger. Maybe it's in line now to get
put on Zenith's busy "front burner".

It was at Zenith about two months ago when I stopped in for a test flight.
Believe they said two 80 hp jabirus. The woman also said something about "it
was being developed in Atlanta" IIRC.

Hey Doug,
A friend in my EAA chapter used trunk paint for the interior of his Cozy,
which is a composite bird, and although it stuck well to the fiberglass, it
didn't wear very well. In fact, that textured surface wears off pretty
quickly, and on that kind of finish, it really shows and started to look
pretty bad. Anyway, that's one guy who regretted using it wear people move
about.

Hi List,
I'm in the process of clecoing the cowl
to the plane and wondered if anyone building
the 601 had used hinge at the lap-joint
between upper and lower cowls.
I've got an excellent fit to the outside of the skin
at the firewall, but Dzus fasteners are going to be fussy
to install correctly.
If you used Dzus fasteners like the wings,
did the .400 length fit the lap thickness
well? Any better ideas?
Appreciate any input here.

My two main gear tires had finally gotten to the wear indicators so I
replaced them. The original tires were the ZAC supplied tires and I had 383
landings on them. The nose tire has a ways to go.
A couple of items worth mentioning:
I purchased my new tires from Northern Tool quite some months ago. I had
also purchased three new tubes at that time. I never bothered to look at
the tubes but now wish I had. The valve stems on the tubes are straight and
not the 90 degree stems needed for the Matco wheels. I ended up using the
original tubes since they were in good shape. Anyway, those of you thinking
of ordering tubes from Northern, beware!!
Another thing I found is that there was a fair amount of corrosion on the
inside of the rims. The aluminum was oxidized (white powder). Apparently
water seeps through the crack in the split rim and gets trapped between the
tube and rim, hence the corrosion. I is not enough to get too excited
about. I cleaned it off with some scotch brite.
The brake rotors are only slightly worn. They start out at .250" and my
thinnest measurement was .246"
The brake pads are probably only about 1/3 worn. Not bad for 383 landings.
Here is the info on the tires if anyone is interested: (remember, you don't
want these tubes) They may have tubes available with the 90 degree valve
stems??

I used trunk paint for both my panel and interior side walls with good
results. Covered only the panel with clear coat. All surfaces show no
wear whatsoever in 3.5 years and after plenty of right seat traffic -
168 of my 567 flights have been with 126 different passengers who
potentially aren't as careful getting in and out as I am.
One nice feature of trunk paint is the ease with which you can either
mend scratches or recover an area following modifications.
For a look at part of my panel go to:
