Hi Bill.
I sat in the demonstrator at Oshkosh and found it fit
perfectly - rudder pedal placement wise. I believe
those pedals are at 245 from the front wall but you
will want to check that. I am about the same size as
you. 5'9" with a 31" inseam. Haven't placed mine yet
but will be modeling after the demo. Hope that helps a
little.

Hello All,
It seems like not a whole lot of traffic has been moving here lately, so
I will ask a question. Has anybody thought about or fitted a CH701 with
lights for night flying? I am a long ways from this right now, but I
just wanted to start thinking about what to do when the time comes!!

Keith,
The biggest source of lamp burnouts on the prop planes is the engine
vibration. Leave it to big manufacturers to stick the lamps right inside
the cowling! You want it as far away from the engine as you can, somewhere
in the wing. Look at Cessna's new lineup of 172 or 182. By the time you're
done you might even find some LED landing lights to put them in a low
profile straight line like some of the new concept cars.

Hi, Keith
I asked Nick what is the recommended location for lights (assuming you are mounting
them on the
wing's leading edge).
He said "near the tip" (or words to that effect).
That was regarding the 601, but I presume it also applies to the 701.
If you want some additional information, there has been some recent discussion
on the Aeroelectric
list.
You can subscribe to the list or simply browse the complete archives or weekly
archive.

Bill: I had this same problem a few months ago. Not knowing how the thing
will "sit" I decided to place the peddles where the plans showed in the original
position. Now that I can sit in the fuselage it seems about right. I won't
know for sure until the seat pad is installed but I figured I could move the
whole thing is I had to.

Keith,
First consider if you fly anywhere near a control tower.
Having lights suggests itself when you're trying to make a destination after
the sun is
nearly gone or when it snows and obscures the sun. I've done both
without lights and would have loved to have had them at the time. The
inclination to say yes
to both instrument remote lighting, wing tip and landing lights if possible,
but if you fly from your
own turf, the hassle of putting more than a wind driven generator and
battery may seem a bit much.
In either case, take a flashlight and your GPS too!
Respectfully, it's your call.

Keith,
This year at Oshkosh I seen a 701 with a landing light built in the
leading edge slat on the left wing. It looked like a simple task. The light
was small and had a flush Plexiglas cover riveted to the skin, and it wasn't
adjustable in any way.

Once you've fixed the rudder position you can still play with it a bit
by lengthing or shortening the rudder cable turnbuckles and steering
rods. Try to make sure that you've built your rudder cables to the range
of adjustment can be accomodated. I'm at the extreme extension of my
cables with 3 threads showing on the turnbuckles and wish I'd made my
cables about 10mm longer, but the fit isn't too bad.

As I round the corner in my fuselage building, I noticed that in the
next section of the plans I am to decide on the position of the rudder
pedals. This is of course without the aid of an available set of
adjustable XL seat and pedals to measure against. Talk about having to
take shots in the dark! I've searched the archives to little avail, so
I'm asking for your inputs where you guys set yours at. I noticed that
this question has been asked before, but no one seems to have gotten a
coherent answer. Perhaps ZAC and company might consider putting a
simple chart on their website
According to the plans (6-B-9 and instructions 6-B-8 page 1), they can
be set from 245 to 200 mm from the front of the cabin floor skin and the
firewall. I'm a fairly short man - 5'8" with a 31 inch inseam.
Normally when I fly in a 172, I have to push the seat almost all the way
forward, and crank it up to it's highest position to be able to
comfortabley manipulate the pedals and to allow me to see over the
cowling.
Is there anyone else in that size range? what did you set your rudder
pedal position to?

I just had my final inspection done and the inspector snagged me on 3
design related issues. Thought I'd share them with you for
consideration. IMO the concerns are valid.
1. The rudder attach bolts in my plans called for an AN3-5A and AN3-6A.
The inspector insists on using AN3-5 and AN3-6 with castle nuts on this.
2. He would not pass the plane without a change to the fuel selector
valves. Specifically he insisted on a single 3-way valve to be placed
away from passenger's feet. Two reasons. 1) the design places the right
valve at the passengers feet, 2) a two valve system is more error prone
than a single valve. (i.e. only one valve should be open at a time, and
a single shutoff point should be provided not multiples). Weatherhead
offers a $20 3-way valve that solves this problem. Worth considering
swapping out the two independent valves for this single valve.
3. He has asked that I recheck that the M-bolts provided in the firewall
forward kit to attach the prop extension to the hub on the engine are
long enough. The bolts appear to be holding by approximately 6 threads,
and the end of the bolt is clearly recessed inside the lug nuts. He
feels that the bolts should be long enough to come out the end of the
lug nut at least. I'm checking with Zenith on this.
