I recall seeing a suggestion in an old Zenair newsletter, to supply venturi air
from the rear baffle of the pressure cowl. This is certainly a lower airframe
drag solution, since the venturi is inside the cowling, and would likely increase
venturi suction, especially at low airspeeds. Has anyone on the List tried
this?

Zenair fans,
I have at last got my 601 into the air. It has flown 3.5 hours so far.
Question does anyone know if a venturi 8" will work on this aircraft if so were
is the best place to locate it so it gives enough vacuum. I have mine placed
under the aircraft just in front of the main spar a couple of inches inside the
cockpit left side. I am only getting 2" of murcury at the monent.
The aircrafts performance seems very good at this early stage. Engine is the Rotax
912S
Any help would be great.

Bill,
I agree, that there are prudent things that can or should be done, like
pulling the heads
and adding the shouldered guides. Small price for security. I intend to
carry
the latest improvements into my Stratus and mounts too, but can't come to
blame Mykal.
I still believe the heat needs to be carried from the engine in a more
efficient manner.
The 601 doesn't do this well with the Zenith arrangement. I still choose
the Stratus
because I like water cooled engines much better even with all the concerns.

If the collection contains over 12,000 pieces of art, why not take a percentage
of them and donate to various aviation related concerns for them to use as auction
pieces. EAA, Young Eagles, Commemorative Air Force, or perhaps a local
museum in the Phoenix. Perhaps a few offered to Matt Dralle, our host, to be
used in the November fundraiser might be appropriate.
The various causes get a valuable donation and the source gets a tax break.
Just thinking aloud...jeff

Subject: | Zenith / Jabiru Engine Instruments |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Ray Montagne <ac6qj@earthlink.net>
Hello List,
I'll be installing a Jabiru 3300A in my 601-XL. I'm not fond of the idea of
spending $3K on the integrated engine analyzer instruments that are being
promoted by the US reps and would prefer to use a more conventional analog
instrument in most of the engine instrument applications. I would like to
survey Jabiru owners to see what they've done for:
1. Analog Tachometer (w/ hobbs preferred)?
2. Oil Pressure and pressure transducer?
3. Oil Temperature and temperature transducer?
For CHT/EGT, I'd prefer to go with probes for all six cylinders. I haven't
decided whether to go digital or analog with a manual selector switch but am
leaning toward digital. In that regard, I'm also interested in what Jabiru
owners have done for CHT probes?
Any input that is based on completed installations or planned installations
where compatibility and configuration issues are already resolved would be
greatly appreciated!

+++The Grand Rapids EIS-6000J will run you $956. For that you get six CHT monitors,
six EGT probes, oil pressure sensor, and oil temp sensor. Add an OAT for
about $24. Most of the fellows on the jabiruengines list will tell you the
same. This is a proven unit, you won't have to cobble up pieces from here and
there and worry about compatibility. No need to reinvent the wheel - unless
you want to do that.
For CHT/EGT, I'd prefer to go with probes for all six cylinders. I haven't
decided whether to go digital or analog with a manual selector switch but am
leaning toward digital. In that regard, I'm also interested in what Jabiru

+++A consideration against manual selector is that it can fail. Always do all
CHTs for a Jab.
Any input that is based on completed installations or planned installations
where compatibility and configuration issues are already resolved would be
greatly appreciated!
+++This is my opinion and you get what you paid for it. I have an EIS from Grand
Rapids and would NEVER change for anything now on the market.
Analog tach - if you think you need an analog tach because you learned with it
you'll find the change over to digital very easy - and with a 10 rpm readout difference.
The "scan training" to access engine readout info will be imprinted
on your skills before taxi testing is over.
EIS warning light - when "Blinking Bob" comes on you will know RIGHT NOW that a
parameter you have set in the unit has been exceeded. Right now! You will see
immediately what the problem is and can go to your plan B. I can not overemphasis
the safety value of this. How many analog instruments have this safety
feature built in as part of the package?
Grand Rapids will supply all the wiring for probes; for oil sensors, the OAT, and
the wiring to Blinking Bob you supply 18AWG. The unit is panel space friendly.
The unit has a built in flight timer
...a built in Hobbs
...built in flight duration warning (you set duration)
...tells you the temp of the unit so you can indirectly monitor the temperature
under your instrument panel
...gives you about five "pages" that you can custom tailor for your "display" page
- the page you would normally view in flight
...has aux. hookups for fuel flow if you like to get complicated
Now, and a big now - if you like the look of lots of analog instruments - knock
yourself out. The instrument panel is an area where the builder's preferences
are far too personal to be influenced from outside. Just make sure you get
the safety coverage you deserve.
Come to PA and I'll give you a demo ride...
tailwinds jeff HDS/3300 and EIS obviously - 120 hours with first anniversary
coming Thursday

Ray,
I have a Jab 2200 in my 701. I bought Jabiru's tach with built in hobbs,
voltmeter, oil temp and oil press gauges and they had installed the oil temp
and pressure senders (all VDO). The pressure sender also had a low press
switch for a light as well. I put CHT probes under a plug (closest to
exhaust valve) on each cylinder and got a dual CHT meter and can switch
between front and back cylinders. I have no EGT. You can see pix of my
panel at http://members.thegateway.net/cfd
