I found that mine had adequate movement without the cutouts. I think they
would only be necessary if your hinge point ended up too close to the rib.
Similarly on the rudder hinge --- my hinge point ended up very close to the
aircraft, so I had to "scallop" my rudder control horn a little more to get
the full movement. (I suggest that when you drill for the rudder hinge
attach brackets, use the NORMAL TOLERANCES to place the the rudder further
out from the fuselage -- in other words I'm not advocating changing the
design in any way, just biasing the accepted tolerances in that direction to
ensure full rudder travel easily.)

And there are a lot of valve guide issues with motors that have been kept
well within temps. The failure rate is way too high for an aircraft motor
and knurled guides are unacceptable. It's a LOT more than 3 failures!
My not so humble opinion is also partly based on the question of how many
guides have fell out of poorly maintained auto engines that have been
overheated horribly...answer...none that anyone knows about.
Overheated or not, guides should never fall out and they have been doing so
on this motor with remarkable regularity.
Once again, take your heads off and send them to Ron at ram engines who will
make a properly sized guide and put a step on the outside...No more
problems, it's the best $500 I ever spent...I might live to old age now...
Frank...3 failures!!

Well, it didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy that only "maybe 3" had failed.
Three out of whatever limited number is perhaps acceptable in an automobile,
but where gravity plays a larger role, it's scary. I'll be pulling mine
apart, even though it's never been run (purchased by someone else in '97, so
before Mykel's time). Similar response on the motor mounts, that there's a
lot more vibration in airplanes than in cars, so that'll happen. No comment
on changing the design, he's just being very careful welding them now.

Bill,
That is sad to hear regarding Mykel's assessment of this problem. It is
clear that failures occurred in heads that never reached the 230 degree red
line for Stratus engines. My temp plug is in perfect shape on the original
head. And the replacement he sent me failed also, though it was flown more
gently than the first. Both had knurled guides. Of course, his modification
of the guides by changing to the bronze alloy and putting retaining rings on
them seems to be acknowledgment of a problem, doesn't it?
He seems like a nice guy, but has denied this in a seemingly naieve way
from the beginning. Don Walker do not archive

Scott,
Thanks! We certainly shouldn't mind, that's exactly the type of info that
should be disseminated, IMHO. On another note, had a conversation with
Mykael at Stratus last night. He seems to believe that any valve guide
issues were caused by overheated engines. Any input?

Fellow Zenith Builders:
I am relatively new to airplane building - I started in Jan. -03 - and I
have met some nice people along the way. A few days ago I called Avery
Tools for the first time. I had decided to purchase a tool, but before
they
would let me place the order, they asked what I wanted it for. I
explained
and Mr. Bob Avery talked me out of it. He actually saved me over $100
because he said what I wanted was overkill and he explained a cheaper
alternative even though it meant my purchasing from somebody else.
I wanted to share this with everyone because it was a very nice thing to
do
and in doing so, Bob lost a sale. The truth is he gained more sales
because
I'll go to Avery Tools first from now on. I actually placed my first
order
with them yesterday.
The list seemed a little slow today, so I hope nobody minds me putting in
a
good word for Avery Tools due to a good experience with them.
Have a good day,

I have for sale a 1994 Zodiac 601UL registered as Advanced Ultralight in
Canada. A low time and great performing plane. Always hangered, no damage.
Total Time Engine and Airframe currently 85 hours (still flying so will
increase); Rotax 912 with a 66 Inflight Adjustable IVO Prop; ASI, ALT, Fuel
Pressure, DC Elec Turn and Slip Co-ordinator, Volt Meter, Fuel Gauge, Rotax
FlyDat Engine Computer that contains Engine Time, RPM, EGT (Dual) CHT, Oil
Temp and Oil Pressure; Two Place intercom; Handheld ICOM Radio with external
antennae; Panel Lights; Wing Tip Strobe Lights; Electric Elevator and
Aileron Trim.
I have had the airplane since May 2003. At that time it had 49.3 hours on
it. It had been placed in a garage since December 1994 as the original owner
had become ill and was not able to fly. The plane stayed in the garage until
I purchased it from the estate. I had to put the plane back together (wings
and rudder), rebuilt the carburetors, replaced the prop, replaced all bungee
s for both mains and the nose gear, replaced and upgraded all the control
cables to 1/8th aircraft cable, new battery and new plugs. The oil and
radiator fluids were all replaced as well.
The exterior paint is scratched and needs touch up due to being stored for
so long. With the Inflight Adjustable prop Climb at 70 MPH, 5200 to 5300 RPM
VSI of between 1000 FPM and 1400 FPM. Cruise is 120 MPH at 4900 to 5000 RPM.
Fuel Consumption is around 3 to 3.5 GPH.
I am a reluctant seller but sometimes things cannot be helped. I am asking
$35,000.00 CDN for the plane. Will consider a trade for a Class A motor home
in good condition. Plane can be viewed at Barrie/Springwater Airport (CNA3).
Demo flights can be arranged.
I can be contacted at 1-705-527-1717 anytime.

For those of you interested in low cost, Moving Map navigation, I've
added some pictures of my installation to the Matronics Photo Share. The
system uses a Compaq Color PDA, Deluo GPS engine and cables, at a cost of
under $500. Software is from PocketFMS, a lead provided through this list.
Have included p/n's with sources and adresses. Would be interested in
feedback from anyone getting this kind of installation up and flying. I
won't be in the air until next spring.

Hi,
Thanks, this is encouraging to hear! I didn't want to have to take those
cables out after getting them so nicely tensioned. So you think at least for
initial flight tests this should be OK as long as I get adequate deflection per
the instruction manual?
As an aside....With that particular part, how could you get the hinge point
too close to the outside center wing rib? These measurements are pretty
straightforward, so unless it is just a screw (like forgetting the cutouts in the
first place) I don;t see how that hinge point could be off.

--> Zenith-List message posted by: dralle@matronics.com (Matt Dralle)
Dear Listers,
I will be installing a new SPAM and virus blocking appliance this
evening or tomorrow. The installation will involve some changes
in the Matronics DNS MX records, and will impact how incoming
email is handled. While I expect these changes to be transparent
to all of the List subscribers, things might go differently... ;-)
The Lists get bombarded with tons of SPAM messages and viruses
each day and fortunately my custom filters have been extremely
effective at filtering most of this from redistribution. Its
time to move to the next level of technology, however, and this
SPAM and Virus filtering appliance seems like an excellent
solution.
I will post a follow up message later in the week when things
have stabilized and I have some filter statistics to share.
Best regards,
Matt Dralle

I seem to remember there is a little tolerance to the max deflection (I
wanted the max, although the only time I ever needed it was during a full
roll!). If you go for the min you might not need the cutouts.

Hi,
I have a strange request. I was overzealous with the application of zinc
chromate on the outside of the tail skins with the thought that it would at
least be under each rivet head on the outside of the skin. I realize that I
can just leave it and sand/buff it when the day ever arrives to paint it,
but it looks pretty bad and I would possibly test fly before painting, etc.
So the question is: Is there any easy way (solvent) to wipe the zinc
chromate off of the smooth outside skin surfaces without damaging anything?
Not a big deal either way, but I thought I would ask.
Thanks!
