Hi to all on the list,
Just thought that you all should know what has happened to me ,when getting freight
from the USA to Australia , as this is what we need as builders and modifiers
of ZAC aircraft. I used BAX Global to ship my leading edge tanks to Darwin
N.T. and they ended up in Perth W.A. and to cut a long story short I contacted
My niece who works for WORLDLINK INTERNATIONAL in Perth to sort it out for
me ( the price difference has to be seen to be beloved ). You can ALL call Christine
Natale on Australia ( 0894790300 ) BH for the best price you can get for
freight anywhere in Australia. Cheers Norm Turner. 601 HDS ROTAX 912 235HRS.

I am planning to run my 912s for the first time tomorrow. I am concerned
about possible air in the oil lines. Should I feel confident if I get good
oil
pressure (30 psi) on the starter with the upper plugs removed and the mags
off
per the manual?
Dave, Just came back from a Rotax maintenance seminar and the ame said to
remove rocker covers and manually check the rocker arm backpressure on the
compression stroke. If the rocker arm gives then you have air in the lines.
The new 912 is very susceptible to oil/air problems, and it is critical you
do this operation prior to first startup. John Birgiolas

Couldn't resist the off-topic post. Just wanted to let you know that if the
National Air Tour is coming through your town (www.nationalairtour.org) it
is well worth a visit! Some of the aircraft are just incredible. For
example, there's a Ryan mail plane that's probably the closest thing to the
Spirit that we'll ever see flying. Well worth a visit.

Subject: | 701 Fuel Tank installation |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "H. Robert Schoenberger" <HRS4@prodigy.net>
List . . . thank you for the replies on the slightly sluggish float operation on
the 701 fuel tank sender. A squirt of WD40 as suggested cured the problem.
I intend to get one of those mirrors on the end of a stick and insert it through
the filler opening to check out how close to the bottom of the tank the ping
pong ball is when the sender is actually installed. I won't mind if it is
slightly above as that will give a small amount of reserve. Like Gary wrote,
I also couldn't get the float to operate the full range of the gage so I made
it go from empty to about 7/8ths full. The empty is the operative setting in
my opinion.
Now I'm ready to put the fuel tank into the wing, and I must be missing something.
First of all, I installed the side "U" channels on ribs 1 and 2 which hold
the tank in place facing rearward as shown in the plans. After drilling and
clecoing, I noticed the photo manual says to install them facing forward. I
can't see what difference this makes, but maybe someone can enlighten me if it
does.
My bigger problem is getting the tanks to go into position. The plans show two
side "U" channels each on ribs 1 and 2 that laterally hold the tank in place.
There is a welded ridge which extends horizontally out about 1/4" along the
top and bottom edges of the side of the fuel tank. I assume the vertical "U"
channels are to fit between these ridges and are to be flush against the flat
side of the tank. The front channel, about 200 mm to the rear of the spar, is
shown on the plans to be 160mm in length. The space between the ridges at this
point is only 163mm. This would seem to be a precision fit, and yet the plans
do not show any height measurements to which these channels are to be set.
The rear side channel is 100 mm in length, and the space between the top and
bottom tank ridges at this point is 120mm so this should work well. Any help
you can give me on this installation will be greatly appreciated.
One final question - is the fuel drain fitting installed before the tank is installed
and the fuel outlet line after? Any problem with getting in there to tighten
(my bottom skin is riveted)?
I hope everyone has a quality day. Thank you again. Hap Schoenberger 701 tail
completed, wing 75% there

Subject: | engine option for 610 XL |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: David Barth <davids601xl@yahoo.com>
Hi List.
I was at an alternative engine seminar on Saturday and
saw a beautiful engine some of you may be interested
in. Designed from scratch as an aircraft engine it is
air cooled but has electronic ignition and fuel
injection. The 125 HP XS200 is from Canpower. They
will be going into production this fall. You can visit
their website at:
http://www.canpoweraviation.com/
They also mentioned something about making cylinders
for VW engines that would enable power increases from
those engines. I wasn't too clear on that so you will
have to ask them if you are interested.
I know this engine is new but they will have some time
under their belts by the time I have to make an engine
decision. Cost is comparable to Rotax or Jabiru.

List,
I recently received a custom 601 canopy from Todd's Canopies
(http://www.kgarden.com/todd/). Anyone who is scratch building or taller
than average may be interested in checking out his site. He also makes a
stock canopy, but the custom one is about a foot longer to blend into the
canopy and will have an inch or two more headroom. When I get the canopy
installed he will have the pictures posted at his website (the stock one is
posted now), hopefully in a few months.

I am drilling my wheel forks to the gear legs now with the centre
wing section resting on the trailing edge and against a wall. This made it
quite easy to align the wheel forks, using a long straight board. So, my
answer to your question is that you can drill the holes anytime after the
centre wing is finished. The forks and gear legs don't need to be bolted
together until later.

Todd,
If you do have to put a longer canopy on your 601, be sure to take into
account
the length and the engagement with the cowl on the front end when you lift
the
canopy and the reduced angle it may have to be for passengers embarking.
Just a thought...........

As I read your post it seems you have a completed center section but no forward
or rear fuse. No reason you couldn't flip the center section over and proceed
with attaching the forks. Easier to work on from above than from the floor,
however, can you drill "up" with ease? Use the nose skin overlap line to mark
in some lines for alignment of one fork and then mount the other fork with just
one bolt so you can do some alignment of the two ( see archives if you think
you want 'em straight or with toe-in).
>Being able to wire behind the panel and place the header tank, pedals etc is

Sure is, good reminder. Keep the firewall off while doing this stuff too - as
much as possible. With just the forks on (no wheels/tires) you'll be about 7
inches lower than with wheels mounted.
>The important part of drilling the forks is just inking thru the gear plates
>after you've found fork alignment.
Larry has machining expertise that escapes me, so I'm unsure of "inking." I drilled
the holes for the axles thru in both forks, mounted one fork carefully using
the Mk I Eyeball, mounted the other fork with one bolt drawn up snuggly,
inserted an arrow shaft thru the secure fork and rotated the other until sighting
thru the arrow shaft you could see both holes in the other fork. A laser
pointer thru the shaft or piece of tubing and onto/into the other fork would work
too. There are lots of good ideas in the archives.
