--> Zenith-List message posted by: RoyN9869L@aol.com To Dave and Brent, thanks for your Rotax compression info, I am installing a 912S on my 701 but was a little concerned after reading the maintenance manual, have any of you on the list attended a Rotax 912 Owners/Maintenance course, how useful would that be to a first time Rotax owner? R. Roy

Subject: First flight 912S Oil Heat
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Frank Jones" <fjones@sympatico.ca> Listers. I just completed the first flight of 601XL C-GYXQ today. The plane flew wonderfully. No real surprises other than: 1) I found aileron control to require more force than I expected, 2) the oil temp was getting close to max on the 912S even though it wasn't a warm day and I wasn't maxing out the RPM by any means. Can anyone offer typical temperature ranges for the 912S that you are experiencing? I'm reading 185F on the CHT (liquid) and 260F on the oil temp. I'd prefer to see the oil around 200F. I have an oil cooler installed with air coming in from a Naca in the cowl. I know I can do a better job of sealing the intake to the oil cooler, so I'll try that next to see if that reduces the temps at all. Frank Jones C-GYXQ 601XL 912S

The oil temp at 260f is hard to believe since you were not running the motor hard. You need good negative pressure on the outflow side of the oil cooler. The NACA duct really is not intended for high presure ram air and will not perform properly unless the air is sucked through the oil cooler. Congrats on the first flight. I bet the smiles are still there hours after ya landed. Ben Haas N801BH.
