Frank,
Congratulations on your first flight.
I had similar temps on the first flight of my 912S powered 601HD. Thinking
I needed more air inlet to the oil cooler I enlarged the opening, but had
little improvement. What it needed was more outlet, to an area of reduced
pressure; so I had to create some ducting from the oil cooler outlet to the
opening at the bottom of the cowl. Vast improvement. I then also made a
rubber seal and installed it around the oil cooler on the inlet side so that
all of the air coming into the duct has to go through the cooler, not around
it. Pressure differential - high pressure on the inlet side, low pressure
on the outlet side - is what makes the oil cooler effective.
With outside temperatures of 30C(86F) I see oil temps of 245F; with outside
temp of 20C(68F)oil is about 190F. Cooler OATs mean I have to block off
part of the oil cooler inlet.

Thanks for the help. It is definitely a fitted part. What I don't
understand, is why Zenith just doesn't say that in the construction
manual instead of say a crimp every 20mm.
Also, why are there 3 each of the tip angles included in the kit? Last
time I checked the plans there are two wings on the 601XL.
To see the outcome check by my website. A photo is on the progress page.

I've a 912; I see CHTs in the 220-250 F range. My Rotax oil radiator is up front
inside the cowl just in front of the oil pump. I see 220 F in the heat of
summer on climb, but it then drops back to 190-200 F in cruise. I'd guess you're
not getting effective air-cooling of the oil rad. For winter use, I added
an oil rad shutter, so I can get the oil up above 212 to boil water out. The oil
rad shutter covers the upper 1/3 of the radiator, controlled by a cable from
the left seat.

Paul,
Thanks a lot for the advice. Do you have a picture of your oil cooler
installation?
I'm beginning to wonder if there might be a mismatch between the VDO
sender on the 912S and the Mitchell gauge I have. Mitchell says they
should match, but I'm not sure. I'm going to tie an ohmmeter in to see
what values the sender is sending.
It seems that the difference between CHT (185) and Oil (260) is very
high. Did you ever see that kind of differential?

Thanks George. I'm going to work on sealing the inlet to cooler to see
if that helps then resort to some kind of outlet ducting if that doesn't
help much. Also checking my instrumentation to make sure it is showing
the correct value.

Hello list members.
Does anyone know how to order from Zenith on line? I have been trying
to find an order form on their home page, so that I may order some A4
rivets.
I have called in an order for part before, but was wondering if this was
possible.
Best regards,

p.s. I have not wasted too many A4 rivets, but it seem that I will need
around 400-500 to complete my project. Anyone else had the same

Just put your needs in an e-mail to tech support or to info@zenithaircraft.com
and Nick will get it. If they have your purchase information on file, it is
easier than most order forms. Bill comes with your "stuff" send them a check
and its done... Low tech... huh

Hi Johann,
Yes, samehappenedto us, we think we are about 200 A4 rivets short, we
now are using the box of the second 701 but we are going to buy about
500 from ZAC. I think that 250 extra rivets will make it in a
project... if we dont waste to much, the A5 came out OK.
Saludos
Gary Gower.
PS In fact, I dont know how much they come in each box...

Knowing full well you will probably destroy one trying to figure out how to
get the right shape, Zenith included an extra one for practice most likely.

I've ordered parts from them by phone or by sending an E-mail describing

I built my plane from partial kits and I've run out of rivets a couple of
times. I E-mailed Zenith for more and they sent them out at no charge, I
don't think they even charged shipping.

Johann,
I too didn't waste too many rivets, but I believe I needed about 800 more.
I did put some .016 L's diagonally between the side frames on the rear
fuselage to stiffen it and stop oil canning. But didn't use that many A4's
for this.
