      Hi List,

This decision has been very (very) difficult for me to come to, but financial
reality is forcing me to part with my project when I am very close to
completion. I am offering for sale my 601HDS Tricycle gear kit which is at a 90%

completion status. There is still plenty to do for someone who wants the taste

of building but might not want to build a complete project.

      Fuselage 100% Complete
Tail Feathers 100% Complete and on air frame square with 0 twist..
Wings, 100% Complete with wing lockers.
Panel, 95% complete, wired and tested.

All control cables professionally nico pressed and installed.

Still to do: Canopy, the winglets that extend off of the back of the center
wing, Interior, Paint, Details and cleanup on electrical. (Brakes need to be
re-bled), install wings and coonect ailerons to bell crank assemblies.

      Equipment List:

Standard 601HDS Kit. (construction technique on assembled parts is excellent)
Stratus EA-81 Dual Ignition, Engine with complete ZAC Firewall forward Kit,
Engine mount(ed) and tested, runs smooth and True. Includes Cowling (cut
installed and fitted) and warp drive 3 blade Prop.

Wheel pants (all 3 wheels) installed.

      Avionics (FULL PANEL)

      Icom Radio 2 way
Garmin GPS III with custom Mount
      Bendix King Transponder
Taskem Digital Altimeter with Built in encoder for XPDR
      Electric Attitude Indicator
      Electric Turn Coordinator
      Panel Mounted Verticle Card Compass
      Vertical Speed Indicator
      2 position Intercom
MAC Grips with controls for Radio, and elevator trim (pre wired for Aileron
      trim, not installed yet)
      Air Speed Indicator
Rocky Mountain Engine Information System installed and tested.
      Fuel Gauges
      All switches and fuses
All critical instruments lighted with a dimmer
      2 Davis Clark Headsets
Capacitance Probes in Leading edge Wing Tanks and 8 gallon Header tank.
Dual Battery system with Emergency Back up
      ELT
Wing strobes and position lights (rudder light also)
      Taxi and landing light installed.
Emergency radio backup. Just plug in a handheld and have instant outside
ant, and inside electric (or back up battery)
Redundant Fuel Delivery system with 4 fuel pumps (2 from wing tanks 2 on
      firewall).

Heater core installed for cabin heat as well as addional cooling for engine.

This plane could easily be completed in 2 or 3 months by someone who has the
time to do the finishing touches. It breaks my heart to sell it but my family

and fiscal responsibility must come first.

If you are interested, or know someone who is please contact me off list at
stevef@addedtouchembroidery.com Or on my cell at 602-628-7000. I can provide
      additional details, photos etc.

I am asking $20K. The airframe and engine alone were more than $21,000 so
this is like getting a free ($8K,worth of stuff) Panel! Workmanship is
excellent and the airplane has been hangared 100% of the time it has been in the

building process. It is a good deal with enough left to do still make someone
      very
      happy with the building process.

I will not carry any paper so if you don't have the financing in place please
don't call looking for crazy deals or financing. Transportation will be
completely the buyers responsibility and discretion, however, if someone wishes
      to
purchase without previewing the aircraft I will arrange for transportation on
this end (Phoenix, Arizona Deer valley Airport).

Thanks list, I hope someone is in the market.

      Sadly,

      Steve Freeman

      Dear Listers,

Well, I apologize. I discovered today why the extra HTML tags and odd
repeating of messages was occuring. About 1-2 weeks ago I was
troubleshooting a different problem and had commented out the section in
the incoming message filter that strips out MIME enclosures and other HTML
data. Duh, then I forgot to put it back! Other filters were stripping
out a good deal of the stuff, but still some stuff was getting through!

I've reinstated the MIME filter and things should be back to normal as of
about 11am pdt on Saturday. Again, my apologies!!!

      Best regards,

Don't sell it! I think about selling my project at least every other day.
There must be another way you can keep your project.

      Congratulations on your first flight.
I wish you all the best in your new plane. It is special to know that
both of us have made the same choice of airplanes from Kolb Firestar to
Zenith 701. And still own both planes. I look forward to hear the
comparison of the two planes. My experience is only flying the Firestar
for 110 hrs. and cant wait to feel the difference in caracteristics
      between the two.
Both are supposed to have the same performance, but the Zenith is
heavier, and more spaceius. Have fun flying your new plane.

      Best wishes,
      Johann G.

      Steve,
There's no financial reality that should force you to take the heavy hit
of an unfinished plane. Finish it and then sell it
and get the value added of a complete plane. The difference will be worth
      it.

I hope the Stratus issues havn't become a fear factor for you.

      You've done such good work.

      Good luck,
      Larry McFarland

Just got back from Copperstate. Whomever was wondering why Nick hadn't
answered his EMail....He's in Arizona. Got to talk to Nick for a few minutes
today and asked about a demo flight, but Nick wasn't offering. They brought
the 601XL and the 701 this year.

Saw a LOT of vendors offering some WAY-COOL "flat-panel"ish avionics, and stuff
using the solid-state gyros. Definitely the future of avionics, and the only
way that we're going to stop having holy wars over electric vs. vacuum gyros.
I suspect that by the time I'm ready to start purchasing gyros, solid-state
will be the way people are going. One can hope, right?

      Doug,

I refuse to buy anything that needs a vacuum pump to operate. Given the
state of technology today, I think we can do better than that. There should
be long lasting and inexpensive EFIS and digital instruments in every
      cockpit in the near future.

Definitely. One of the cool little boxes was a little 4" cube that was a fully
solid-state gyro driven autopilot. Takes input from your GPS, and keeps the
plane straight, level, and on-course. I told the guy what they needed to do
was take outputs from the gyros, and drive display data with them, rather than
keeping them internal. I suppose what you'll see in the future is several
boxes ALL with gyro data contained inside...kinda like how the auto industry
puts little micro-processors ALL over the car.

I'd like to see an AI or DG that isn't a gyro, but rather just a display head.

That way, we won't all be relying on graphic displays driven by some kind of
      Micro$oft Windows technology.

Solid state does not equate to the best technology for every situation
though. Many of the low end electric gyros will not perform in extreme
attitudes. Since recovery from an extreme or unusual attitude is one reason
for having a gyro, it would be worthwhile to examine the performance of any
unit that you might consider to see if the device is going to abandon you
when you need it most. When comparing the cost of an piezo gyro that
performs at any attitude when compared to the vacuum gyro or electric gyro,
the vacuum and electric gyros are competitive on a cost basis.

Given the cost analysis of a gyro that will provide the full service that I
expect from the instrument, I'm staying with vacuum driven systems. Glass
cockpits are pretty, no doubt, but acquiring glass instruments that meet FAA
standards simply are excessive when the price of a fully functioning
instrument exceeds the price of the basic aircraft kit.

      Johann,

      Yes, great minds think alike!
My minimal experience shows quite a difference between the two... but Ill
reserve my comments til I get a bit more experience. But in a nutshell,
the HIGH NOSE attitude of the 701 is really strange at takeoff and
landing.... but, the REAL difference sadly to say, is that we are spoiled
with the unobstructed forward view in the Kolb... a high nose in the 701
really blocks the runway in comparison. It is more like a GA. But, of
course, this is a much more substantial plane wiht lots of fuel capacity...
can now GO places!! (and take people)

When you get closer to flying it, we'll touch base again and Ill have more
      comments and experience.

      Keep building!

      Jon

Actually, there is a company that makes a DG and AI driven by
accelerometers....MGL Avionics from South Africa. I purchased their EIS
system, which shows all parameters in digital and graphical form for $499!
It's much cheaper than the Grand Rapids EIS, and does a lot more.

They sell individual digital instruments, as well as complete flight
      systems.

My comments are directed at pilots planning on flying VFR day only, where
recovery from unusual attitudes is done on a purely visual basis. IFR is a
diferent story and IFR-certified glass cockpits are definitely too expensive
      for most of us.

      Keith,

      Thanks for your comments!

I am at about 600' here in Wisconsin. I have a 1000' runway and it has been
windy last few days so I have managed only about a dozen takeoffs... but I
would say that I am using a little over half -- so lets say about 600-700'
max... and Im sure when I learn how to do things right it would be shorter.
This BTW, is off of grass.. I think the specs ZAC uses is off of pavement,
      which would be shorter.

I would recommend that the next assemly to build would be the fuselage for
psychological reasons... you can sit in and enjoy the fuselage... if you
build the wings first you can only hang them on the wall !! This will keep
      the momentum going this way!

Speaking of throwing in the towel, it is incredible about that Steve
Freedman (I think) that is abandoning his 601 project after 90% complete!!
Now that is depressing. Maybe he'll have a vhange of heart, but Im sure
there are circumstances we dont know about!

Keep building.. look forward to flying with you someday!
