Subject: 801: Assembling Firewall, Custom Engine Mount Fabrication
--> Zenith-List message posted by: Scott and Valeree Stout <the_stouts@worldnet.att.net> Good Morning... When assembling the 801's firewall the manual( http://www.zenithair.com/stolch801/data/new/801forward-fuselage-section2.pdf ) cover page refers to using AS5 or A5 rivets. However, subsequent pages only refer to AS5 rivets. What have folks been using, the stainless steel rivets or plain A5's? Also, for those who have built their own engine mounts, how did you distribute the weight among the 4 firewall bolts? Did you use the possible top fifth center mount location as part of the system of load bearing or just for stabilizing? Any discussion is appreciated as I have used only 2 dimensional equations( as provided on the ACRE web site ) to figure loading on a single tube/mount point ( http://home.earthlink.net/~rotaryeng/tubeload.gif ). For my rotary engine, not matter how I figure it( normal upright or plugs-up ) the "bed" of the engine mount is below the 2 top bolt holes by 2 inches or so. Thus, a majority of the ( 320 or so pounds of weight ) will be distributed through the bottom 2 bolt holes. Most likely not an issue as the Franklin engine mount seems to be of a similar design. Are there other engine mount design issues I am not considering? Thank You. -Scott http://home.att.net/~the_stouts_zenith_801

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Rich" <rbauer@intergate.com> I used the AS5 rivets. MUCH stronger than the A5. I had to buy a compressor to squeeze it. My dad's homemade compressor only went to about 75 psi & could only handle up to the A5. I would definitely use the top center engine mount bolts. The firewall assemble isn't strong enough without distributing some of the engine weight to the welded cabin frame. It wouldn't be there if it wasn't necessary.
