My 601 HDS has a TOP speed of about 125 and a cruise of 110 to 115mph. Compare that to the claimed 140mph cruise and you get the idea. I was thinking about all sorts of speed mods to the plane and some have done them and got a bit more but realistically you are talking about a LOT more time and to be honest not much gain I think. Really the 601 is starting in the wrong place if you want speed. I think the zac XL is only rated to about 125HP engines. Put it this way...MY choice is to build an RV 7 and sell the 601. The 601 is not a bad plane, it has a lot of good qualities but going fast is not one of them. Ok unless you built the plane based on the claimed cruise speeds. I have only recently started looking at the 601XL now that it has the dual stick option. Before I was mostly leaning towards the RV-7A; but, I think I'd have an easer time with the pulled rivets. What kind of speeds can I realistically expect with 160 HP? 180 HP? I'll build light with night VFR instruments only. I am thinking of a Mazda rotary or Eggenfellner Subaru. My requirments are 150 MPH cruise and use of a 1600' runway with trees at the end. Have builders built up a fastback fuselage to decrease drag? The wheel pants on the factory photos are bulbous and I bet Van's would add a few more MPH. Any common cowling or fairing mods? thanks for the input, Chuck __________________________________ Free Pop-Up Blocker - Get it now http://companion.yahoo.com/ advertising on the Matronics Forums. ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 08:40:58 AM PST US From: "Paul Petty" Subject: Zenith-List: exhaust --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Paul Petty" Hi folks. I have an exhaust system for a 912UL/Zenith that I have no use for. I purchased Roger Kilby's engine and are putting it on a Kolb. Let me know if anyone need's this exhaust. pp ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 08:55:14 AM PST US From: "Dave Pepper" Subject: RE: Zenith-List: exhaust --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Dave Pepper" Is it a stainless steel exhaust system? new? Does it fit the new cowling Zenair is shipping now? Thanks....Dave ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 09:27:24 AM PST US From: "Leo J. Not much faster but STOLHL as in Short Takeoff and LONG HOT LANDING! BUT IT CLIMBS LIKE A ROCKET!!! After 12 months enjoyable work, it flies. CH701- 912S. Needs a little fine tuning, idles too fast 2500rpm, (approach 50-55 knots) my weight, 95Kilos causes left wing low, can be adjusted out. and elevator needs full nose down trim to fly hands off, have not figured this one out yet. very stable longitudinally with a fast roll rate, a real joy to fly. Congratulations! Mine was left wing heavy also. It is level with two. I guess I'll leave mine alone for now. BTW...I was visiting a near by airport today and found my left carburetor was loose. The rubber coupling had split. I have had problems with the left carb coming disconnected before. The first time was at the first engine run. I thought the factory left it loose. It would get shaken out of its rubber mount if the engine didn't start right up when it was cold. I over tightened it and in a short time the rubber split. I suspect this part was not built quite to spec because the right carb rubber mount fits much better and would tighten properly per the manual. There was no way the left carb was going to stay on with the clamp adjusted per the manual so what the heck I gave it a try. Anyway, I was scratching my head wondering where I was going to tie the plane down and how I was going to get home. That was when a couple of fellows came over to help. Turns out, they where building a 701 at their hangar (beautiful craftsmanship). They helped me with a temporary field repair and I was back home before it got too dark. Thanks Guys!
