Listeners..... and especially you new ones, there is a nice tool ( builder
list by location ) that Matthew Mucker put together a year ago by popular demand.
I used it to find a builder close enough to visit and swap ideas, get encouragement,
and support. If you get time, visit the site and add your name.
Someone right around the corner might be looking for you.
( Expecting my DAR visit Sunday or Monday , weather permitting )

Listers,
If anyone has converted from a hingeless to hinged aileron, using the original
skin and rivet holes on the aileron and/or wing, I would love to hear about it.
My wings and ailerons are covered and set up for hingeless, but I want to change
to hinged if it can be done without major modification.
Thanks,
Bob Miller

Has anyone successfully covered the gaps between ailerons and wing? There have
been a few threads on the subject, but nothing shows up on a search to find somebody
actually flying with this mod.
Here's a couple links that John Adams posted to the list in May, 2000 that are worth re posting. Interestingly, one of these covers the top of the gap, the other the bottom of the gap. The rationale for covering the top seems to be to keep ice from forming in the gap. The first is http://user.mc.net/~amrd/gapseals.html. From this link you can get to http://user.mc.net/~amrd/article.htm which is a story about a guy who used 3-M Leading Edge Tape to cover the gaps on his Cherokee.
The other link is http://www.knots2u.com/2832PRICE.htm.
I went to the National Air and Space Museum to see if any of the old planes had
covered these gaps. The only one that had was Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Vega.
The gaps were covered with a piece of aluminum about 2" wide attached to the
bottom of the wing and horizontal stab. The covers had a downward curl at the
trailing edge, about 1/4" radius, apparently to prevent it from hanging up
on the moving surface.
Any input would be appreciated!

I intend to install aileron seals as well, based on input from previous
listers. One suggestion was to use between 0.016" and 0.025" thick Al
sheet for the seal. It needs to be wide enough so that with the aileron
fully deflected there is no way the seal can be forced into the gap by air
pressure. The turn down on the trailing edge is required to prevent
hanging up on the aileron. Some sort of teflon or nylon protective surface
at the contact surface would probably be nice to save on paint as well. I
will first determine the planes performance without the gap seals to
determine how effective they are. It will be awhile before I reach that
point, as I recently started on my second wing.

Bob:
Ray Montagne has done this and has an interesting page on his website that
explains what he had to do to make it work. The link is:

Good luck.
